Locks rides off to New Mexico
He's not answering his cell phone today, but ESPN.com and others are reporting that Illinois offensive coordinator Mike Locksley is taking the New Mexico job.
At first glance, I wonder why the 39-year-old Locksley didn't stick with his plan to start at a BCS school. But then I notice the Lobos aren't in a bowl for just the second time in seven years.
Clearly, there's a foundation there. And if Locksley continues to be one of the nation's top recruiters, then he'll rebuild New Mexico in a hurry and be in position to take over a BCS program within 4-5 years. Call him Turner Gill II.
As for the Illini, tight ends-inside receivers coach Jim Pry and outside receivers coach Kurt Beathard have lots of coordinator/playcalling/quarterback coaching experience on their resumes. I'm willing to bet one of them gets Locksley's job.
