Sad times in the city
The recent rash of incidents with shootings and brawls at Chicago Public League basketball games is just downright sad. Kids playing a game shouldn't have to be worried about their safety during and after games. The vast majority of people who want to attend games home and away should be able to do so without worrying about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It's a shame a few knuckleheads have to spoil it for everyone but that's what happens. And the shame of it is most Public League games go on without incident.
It will be interesting to see if suburban teams that have gone to the city - primarily in basketball - will continue to do so. About 10 years ago I went with Buffalo Grove's boys team to a game at Roosevelt on the Northwest Side. Not exactly the worst part of the inner city, but still not great since a kid was shot and killed in front of the school a year later. Anyway, it was a great experience for the kids from the suburbs to see a different lifestyle and appreciate how much they have here with facilities, support, etc...
