Dello to step down at Barrington

Barrington announced this afternoon that boys head basketball coach Marty Dello will step down at the end of his sixth season at the school. Dello's wife has been battling breast cancer and he contemplated making the move in the fall before making his decision in January.
"During the fall and the beginning of the season I was shuttling between the hospital, the basketball program and our own family activities," Dello said in a release from the school. "It has been exhausting and the young men and families who take Barrington basketball so seriously deserve the full attention and energy of their head coach."
Dello is currently 75-90 at Barrington and 126-125 in his ninth year as a head coach. He was 51-35 in three years at Crystal Lake South.
His first Barrington team - led by Jason Richards (Davidson) and Bucky Cox (Drake) - went 20-9 and won a regional championship. He was an all-Fox Valley Conference point guard at Woodstock (graduated in 1987), was an assistant basketball coach at his college alma mater (Northwest Missouri State) and a head coach at Bellevue University in Nebraska.
"We are supportive and understanding of Marty's decision," said Barrington AD and former boys hoops coach Mike Obsuszt. "His wife has finished all of her radiation treatments and we know how important it is for Marty to devote as much time as possible to her and their children.
"He has done a commendable job of coaching under such difficult circumstances and we wish him and his family nothing but the best."
Barrington is 4-19 this season and 2-6 in the Mid-Suburban West with 4 overtime losses. Two weeks ago the Broncos got their biggest win of the season at home when they knocked off division leading Hoffman Estates 54-40. They have four regular season games left - including a visit to Palatine on Friday.
Dello will continue as a driver's ed teacher in the Barrington PE department. Obsuszt said they will begin their search for a new coach soon to have someone in place well before the 2009-10 school year starts in August.
We'll have more in a story on-line later tonight and in tomorrow's paper.
