Payne-ful news for Saxons

Schaumburg's boys basketball program and Cully Payne didn't get the news they were hoping for Friday morning. MRI results revealed the stress fractures in his lower back have not completely healed and will need at least four more weeks to do so, which would end the senior star's regular season and high school career. Payne said last Saturday his back was feeling a lot better and he hoped to play in tonight's Mid-Suburban West showdown with Hoffman Estates.

Marty Maciaszek has been covering high school sports at the Daily Herald since 1992. He first started covering the high schools as a sophomore at York High School in Elmhurst in 1982 and received an excellent prep education - especially in boys basketball - for two years in Peoria in the late 1980s while attending Bradley University.

Marty has covered and enjoyed talking with coaches and athletes in just about every sport sponsored by the IHSA. He also is a die-hard White Sox fan who was fortunate enough to attend Game 2 of the World Series he never thought he would see in his lifetime.
