So just what did Lou say?

All eyes were on the press box TV in the fourth inning tonight when Lou visited Jason Marquis on the mound. The Cubs had just come within 2-1 of the Padres, and Marquis opened the bottom of the fourth by walking Paul McAnulty. It would be one of Marquis' 5 walks for the night in what turned out to be a 9-6 Cubs victory. Lou did some gesturing on the mound when he got to Marquis and used some words fit for neither a family newspaper or even a family blog. "I told him he had to throw strikes," Lou said after the 3-hour, 29-minute game. "I said if not, I had to get somebody else in the ballgame." Marquis wound up with the victory, running his record to 3-3. The first-place Cubs won their ninth straight and ran their record to 38-21. Marquis was asked about being on the business end of one of Lou's "nice chats." "It was one-sided," Marquis said. "Obviously, he had some productive words, and go from there. No hard feelings. He made great points out there. I went out there and just tried to do the job I needed to do. Just listen and take constructive criticism. He sees something and wants to let you know. Obviously, it helped out." The Cubs issued 7 walks on the night, 5 by Marquis and 2 by newly recalled Kevin Hart. "No good," said Lou, whose hot button gets pushed quite easily by walks. Lou tried to stay away from Bob Howry and Kerry Wood but he wound up using both of them, with Howry getting 2 big outs in the eighth when the Padres rallied from 9-3 and threatened to tie the game. Wood earned his 16th save. The Cubs now have not had a "quality start" in six straight games, all victories. Cubs baserunners stole six bases, the first time they've done that since May 14, 2000, during a brutal loss at Montreal.
