Bonus drama in MSL championship
Although we do have deadlines to worry about, there are some games you'd love to see go on and on. And we were inches away from at least a second overtime in the Mid-Suburban League boys championship as Prospect held on for its first crown in 23 years with a 61-57 win over Schaumburg.
The last 14 minutes were filled with back and forth drama that made it quite a show for the full house at Prospect. Prospect guard Joe LaTulip had a night filled with highlight-reel plays and Schaumburg senior Josh Spandiary banked in not one but two 3-pointers. It was definitely one of the most exciting title games in years.
The crowd was fantastic and there's no better place to watch a game with a packed house in this area than Prospect's Jean Walker Field House. It was reminiscent of 1999, when people were standing in both ends as Schaumburg won its first sectional championship and ended the prep career of Elgin great Sean Harrington. There's also a classic Herald picture from the mid-70s of an MSL title game at Prospect where the crowd was so big it probably violated every fire code in the book.
A lot of cool side stuff in the game, too. Prospect state champion wrestler Matt Boggess presented the game ball to the officials and retired Daily Herald prep columnist Bob Frisk got to throw the ceremonial jump ball. The boys also followed the MSL girls lead and for the first time announced and presented the all-conference awards to the players chosen at halftime.
