Sox cash in on Cabrera
Nicely played, Orlando Cabrera.
When the veteran shortstop turned down the White Sox' offer for salary arbitration in early December, which could have netted him a $10 million salary this season, Cabrera obviously was looking at the two-year, $18.5 million deal Edgar Renteria got from the Giants.
Even though he is a better player than Renteria, December turned to January, and January to February, and Cabrera got nothing.
On Monday, the 34-year-old infielder reportedly settled for a one-year, $4 million contract with the Oakland A's.
The signing is great news for the Sox.
Since Cabrera was a "Type A" free agent, the White Sox receive two high 2009 draft picks from Oakland. As it stands now, they get the 38th overall pick and the 63rd pick, according to a source.
The two picks from the A’s could drop just a bit when/if the remaining two “Type A” FAs (Manny Ramirez, Ben Sheets) sign contracts.
No matter what, the Sox have an opportunity to add even more quality young talent to join Gordon Beckham, Dayan Viciedo, Aaron Poreda and Jordan Danks.
As for Cabrera, it looks like he got what he deserved.
A productive all-around player for over a decade, Cabrera was mostly a miserable presence during his one season with the White Sox. Cutting out of the clubhouse early, calling the press box to complain about errors and bickering with teammates like Jermaine Dye obviously cost him a lot of cash.

Gordon Beckham is a beast hope we get the chance to see him sometime this year!
Him and Alexi will be a deadly duo for a long long time!
Thanks, Oakland. What a lovely gesture.
4 million a year? poor baby... What he deserves his to be kicked in the a** and thrown out of baseball for being a punk
He's relegated to the stop-gap standing his deserves. Bring on Viciedo.
