Cutler would make Bears much better
If Jerry Angelo really doesn't believe in the concept of rebuilding and is committed to putting a competitive product on the field every year and, if he is also fixated on getting the quarterback position right, why not call the Broncos and offer a first-round pick for Jay Cutler?
Cutler is already a Pro Bowl quarterback and, nothing against Kyle Orton, but he isn't. A first-round draft pick may sound like a lot, but not when you consider that last season only two of Angelo's last seven first-round draft picks – Tommie Harris and Greg Olsen – contributed much of anything to the Bears. In the past two seasons, Cutler has thrown for 8,023 yards and 45 touchdowns.
Cutler, while he did sound like a whiny sissy in his outrage over being shopped in a three-way trade involving the Chiefs and Bucs that never happened, is a talented player. And he's talking as if he wants out of Denver.
Give him another quality wide receiver, someone like free agent Laveranues Coles, and he makes the Bears a lot better right now. Even the same mediocre cast of wide receivers would look better with Cutler throwing the ball.
So, if Cutler is still on the block, why not make an offer?

Lets get down to brass tacks here...the Bears stunk last year and they were very lucky to have a winning record. They're getting old and they need to rebuild. Orton was not an accurate quarterback three years ago and he still isn't, he will never be better than mediocre. Cutler gives them a good young quarterback to build around, and they can use the draft to fill their other needs of running back, receiver, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker, and safety. Then all they need to do is to ditch their outdated, overrated Tampa Bay organizational philosophy and they might be competitive by the time the Olympics come to Chicago in 2016.
If Kyle ever learns to look off of his receivers instead of zeroing in on them with his eyes he might one day win a Super Bowl......Hopefully here in Chicago
I'm an Orton man, through and through....but Cutler's a superior player. Orton could lead this team, provided he has more time to learn; but the Bears are in a building-phase--whether Angelo will admit we need it or not--and Cutler would take away from our necessity to build the skill level at QB.
Also, the offensive package that moved to Denver with the hiring of a new Head Coach requires a QB with a short, accurate arm: Orton. It's lucrative to both sides.
Just imagine Cutler dropping back and airing it out to Hester, and tell me you don't want to see Cutler in Chicago.
Sorry but I'm skeptical. QBs coming to the Bears typically don't fare well (Think Chris Chandler, Kordell Stewart). Chicago is probably the toughest place in the NFL to play QB. Cutler comes here his numbers go down drastically. AND Cutler is turnover prone. No one talks about that. Cutler has LOSING record as a starting QB. Kyle has a winning one.
Kyle has been in the system for a long time, and people seem to forget the way he peformed BEFORE he got hurt. He was hitting people all over the field and distributing the ball well. I don't buy this crap that he only makes short passes, the people who say that weren't watching the first seven or 8 games of the year.
It is well documented that Orton does not throw the deep ball well. He doesn't put enough loft on the ball.
This makes sense to me... He's got every bit of arm strength that Grossman had, with better accuracy. I'd give up our 18th pick for a Pro-Bowl QB!!! With Jay Cutler in the lineup the Bears have already become better! Give him a couple WR's then were are talking.
Not likely........plus even if they got him he still has nobody to throw it to. The Broncos will wise up quick and make him feel wanted again. Trading a Pro Bowl QB that is about to enter his prime is not a recipe for success.
Orton vs Culter...there is no contest...hands down Culter. I think if you polled every GM in the league and asked them Orton or Cutler? You would get Culter 100% of the time.
The numbers aren't even comparable...Cutler's are so far superior to Orton's. 87.1 career QB rating for Cutler.(this is higher then P Manning, B. Favre, D. McNabb) to Orton's 71.1 career rating(Rex Grossman's is 70.2). 54 TD's/37 int's for Cutler...30 TD's/27 int's for Orton...the numbers are not even close...also, let's remember that the 07 numbers were that good even though Cutler fought/played not knowing he had diabetes.
You can talk about the offensive line but it actually played okay for most of the year last year. However, Cutler would actually make them better as well...because he can move.
I agree with Bob. The Bears won't do it, but if they really want to get better at QB, then this is the most logical move. Per the last post, a better line and better Receivers won't make Kyle Orton throw the ball any better. . .he is great at the short passing game and completely inadequate in all other phases. . .and to me that means he's a strong number two. Cutler can make all of the throws and he is the type of QB that could actually make the Hester project work. . .
Bob, generally enjoy your stuff but you dropped the ball big time here. You saw a name and didn't do any further research.
Look at Cutler's numbers in 07 - nearly identical to Orton's numbers in 08 (i.e. the first full season for both).
Yes, Cutler stepped up his yards and TDs in 08, but his INTs went up and he blew a sizeable lead in one of the worst divisions in football. And now he's oh-so-upset because his team looked to trade him.
Really, this guy is an upgrade over Orton - so much so that he's worth the hefty price tag it'll take to get him from the Broncs?
The reality is that with far better wide receivers, a far better line, and a far superior coach, Cutler didn't do anything better than Orton has done. And he's shown an inability to win as well as an ability to be a giant baby.
Orton has shown nothing but the ability to win and to be a great teammate (who else would win 10 games as a rookie then sit quietly by watching Grossman destroy everything he had built?)
Face the reality of the NFL - Orton is as good of a QB as they Bears can hope to get. If they want better QB play, then the answer is NOT, absolutely NOT, in getting a new QB. It's in getting a better line, better receivers, a better defense (for field position), and a better offensive coordinator (how do the Bears finish in the bottom third of the league two years in a row, yet neither coordinator is in the unemployment line?)
Cutler didnt lose the lead, Denver's Defense was awful and they had no running backs as they literally were at their 6th running back (fullback) and no backups...Also, sorry, been to two games last year and I saw 5 passes (3 against NO) where Hester was WIDE open and Orton either over/under threw, which would have been atleast 50 yard gainers, if not TD's....
