Brouwer out

Hawks winger Troy Brouwer will miss at least the next two games with an apparent right knee injury suffered in Sunday's 4-0 loss to Vancouver.
Brouwer was hurt in a first period collision with Darcy Hordichuk.
"It's short term, and by short term, it's not serious," coach Joel Quenneville said.
Brouwer won't play Tuesday at Montreal or Wednesday against St. Louis.
Colin Fraser will move back into the lineup on the fourth line with either Ben Eager or Dustin Byfuglien moving into the top nine.
Quenneville said Cristobal Huet would start in goal against the Canadians. Huet's last start was March 18 at Columbus.
Matt Walker returned to practice Monday but won't play Tuesday.

Anyone else pissed off?

Hello?

This is unreal. I completely agree with some of the posters on the bottom of the article. It's getting old. I'm tired of a few things:

1. Young team. If this team finished with 70 pts and wasn't INVOLVED in a semi-playoff run last year, fine. However, they were. They have played important games and you could argue that last year's games were BIGGER as they were fighting for their lives. They have regressed in that sense. THey look uninterested, and how you continually get dominated in the beginning of MARCH games is really getting old. Either they DO NOT care, or they can't learn their lessons. How many times do you need to be punched in the face before you duck? How many?

2. Management. Look, it all comes down to Tallon, but when this team finished 5th or 6th then it's ALL ON HIM and his cronies who thought this team was a defensive center away from being THAT good. Instead, they have limped home and look more like smoke n mirrors to me, then the dominant team they were in December.

3. Future. Please, look at the cap before you write how this is a team built for 2010 and beyond. This team gets A LOT worse if Havlat walks and their is no replacement. Throw in that does anyone want to see 60-70 games of soft goals by Huet next year? Lots of RFAs, and a shrinking cap is the 800 lb gorilla in the room that everyone continues to ignore.

4. Top players crumbling. This is the most concerning. Except for a few, nobody has been in the postseason and now we are left to hear from Andrew Ladd and Brian Campbell all about what it takes, and all the other bs cliches they can dig out. Save it. How about raising your game and stop giving away pucks, or being out of position, or actually score a goal for once in 39 games? How about that? Duncan Keith looks tired and his play has shown it, and #88 continues to be a ghost the past 6 games and a non factor. He even got some time on the 4th line to have a message sent.

It's on Quenneville to find the right buttons to push to motivate this team. Either jump on them, or loosen them up. I just dont' see how anyone can expect anything more then a 5 game series in the 1st round. They went 6-7-2 in a month where they had 11 home games and a chance to cement 4th place and have a chance to rest players in April for the playoffs. Instead, they have choked.

Anyone else catch Murray calling out Kane and Campbell postgame about needing to play better? Finally, somebody gets it.

Posted by Steve Rain on Wed, 04/01/2009 - 09:19
That's 100% correct, Steve Rain

I'll add more by saying that if you listen to Tr Murray, he'll fill in anything the listener didn't notice himself. This summation is given in post # 40 & 41 in the hair pulling Vancouver article. There is no disputing what is mentioned in those two posts -- if you dispute, you disagree with Tr Murray, don't think of it as disagreeing with me. It is fairly obvious what problems the team has. And if you think we can rise up and beat St Louis, then it had better be a different Blackhawks team that shows up. Because the Blues are finishing their checks, players are held accountable, the defensemen and team defense is stronger and less error prone than Chicago, and their weakest link (in goal) hasn't hurt them down the stretch run.

Columbus is now a deep laden roster and Hitchcock has players buying into his system. Mason stumbled a tad, but has been good again lately. I'm sure Vegas would place all their money against Chicago in the ST Louis and Columbus games -- check the line yourself. How disappointing it is late in the season after such glorious early success! Quenneville knows the problems; how long/when does he get this team to compete and adjust to the strategy employed against us?

If we finish the season poorly and limp out of the playoffs in a sweep or 4-1, it sure makes sense that Tallon is the fall guy. I just want to know this: did McDonough tell Tallon to sign a goaltender (and Huet was the best available)? Tallon has one more year left on a handshake contract that Rocky will honor, so don't expect a revelation if there is one to uncover. Beside that, how the heck could McDonough market that?

The FALL GUYS

I posted earlier this year, that if the Hawks falter and don't make the playoff's or get
whacked early in round 1, it will be ALL Tallon's fault. I was wrong, I figured out some other scapegoats for the Organ-i-zation to blame. All of Q's assistant coaches other than Bergevin,
because the other assistants were Savvy's guys, they are the guys doing the talking during the game and at practice ,while somebody else stands around and just does his keenan act by looking pissed off.

Columbus reinforcement for games vs Chicago

The Blue Jackets today recalled Filatov. He was their #1 last year, #6 overall. He lit up the scoreboard in world juniors tournament and had a hat trick in his first game in Clombus after that tournament. Then he sat out next two games, was used sparingly and later sent to the farm club. Filatov is a dynamic offensive player. Even used in a bit role, the Blue Jackets can insert him and he could be yet another legitimate threat to score against our beleagured bunch of soft players.

On another subject: How could anybody could be a wimp that plays this game of hockey? Kane had better get stronger and have at least one big sized, mean linemmate next year. If not, he won't compete and he may not even score 20 goals. Kane doesn't have to be a grindr, but he has to compete better. Kane should learn to take a hit and stop worrying incessantly about how good looking he is and how many goals he gets. Grow up and stop being a wimp, Mr Kane. Fans would hate to see all your natural ability go to waste. Just the facts, Mr Kane. I'm sure there is some wise crack post person out there who won't like this post. Too bad, because when this blog continues to degenerate into name calling because people cannot politely express their disagreement, then it is time that TheDaily Herlad and Sassone should stop publishing. Name calling is for weak kneed sisters who are uncouth, immature, and hot -headed. I'm sure they talk the same way to their wives and boss at work. No wonder other post people have stopped posting...too much negativity. That's the real world for you.

PUCK..WHAT PAPER

PUCK..What is the Daily Herlad, I have never read that. HAHA..I'm sorry but couldnt help but to give you some good natured grief about your typo ( I have many too). Yes I agree, Columbus seems to be making the right moves, maybe they will surprise in the post season.

Exactly

Everyone has a view from the game they watch and that's why I post on this site. I want to read about what I may miss, or other thoughts to either ensure I am nuts, or maybe know a little bit. If you are able to post, you should be able to accept constructive criticism. Internet tough guys are not needed.

Kane has GOT to step up. I want to see this kid play mean, throw his body around, and be a spark plug. Stop hiding. He has been back checking a lot lately, so i appreciate that, but if he's a top 6 he can't be invisible in crunch time for 6 game stretches. Not even a point. That's sad. Toews meanwhile, is starting to pick up his physical game realizing what postseason hockey brings. he's playing 110% every shift, and trying to lead.

Tallon may be set up for a firing, but I also question who pushed that Huet signing through? It sounds very similar to the Cubs overpaying for Soriano to make a splash and create a buzz in the offseason. If that's the case, I want McDonaugh to answer that. This guy is a marketing guy, who takes all the credit but also passes all the blame.

Quenneville has to have this team ready. You can't rely on the players because they are proving that they have no veteran leader to lead them through this rocky patch. They don't have a Lappointe to call out guys and get this thing fixed. All these guys looked scared and are playing tight.

lastly, where is the Havlat situation at? Either sign this guy, or tell us it'll be addressed after the playoffs. It really is getting old. Tallon saying they want him, and will do EVERYTHING to try to sign him, and then........silence. Obviously the way he's improved his defensive game, and shown he can play in 70+ games, somebody is going to throw him huge money.

Oh, and it's funny that Babcock calls out Detroit and claims that they ARE NOT READY for the playoffs, yet no word from any Hawk leader/coaches. Just shows how far behind this team truly is.

Brouwers Absence

Brouwer's absence will be missed a lot more than the mouth breathers, who only look at stats, think. Troy is a big body who takes up room out there and opens up ice for his line mates. He is also, as others have pointed out, more than willing to consistently get in front of the net.

Put Kane back on that line and watch how soft it gets. Yes, Towes can play the power forward role well but you really don't want your center in deep mucking it up do you? Actually Kane-Toews-Sharp may work tonight against the Habs who are as punchless as an upside down clown car. But against St. Louis? Look out!

Soft issues

E Runs:
1). The only thing wrong in that post you responded to about my sources, is that the source forgot exactly who the forward was, and said he thought it was Brophey when in fact it was Dowell. Dowell, BTW, makes more sense. He has NHL experience and is not a bad player for a checking line ..more a 4th probably than a 3rd line player.
2). Bowman watches most of his games from his couch in TaMPA until recently.

Do you think Brouwer can be best utilized as a player who fills in, but not necessarily a regualr in the top six forwards? I'm thinking maybe we can live with his skating, as long as we don't have another slow skating forward on the roster.

And, if you go down to the Bud Light Select bar, I am not looking for a fight. Rather, I'd shake your hand. I didn't care for you comment about sources laughing at my post...but I'm sure I'll be exonorated and my post justified. Whatever, you're welcome to express your views as well as I am. To think that anyone is looking to fight is ludicrous. Even if it was true, inside any establishment, you'll go straight to jail. I just think if you stopped by you'd see I'm not trying to pick a fight or be confrontational. Heck, I wouldn't even be drinking a beer. If other post people are present, I'm wearing a brown colored jacket. Not that I expect you will stop by, but if you do peace, brother.

Big Game

Tonight is huge. This team has to come out firing after a VERY pathetic showing at home. I dont' get it. I don't get how you are facing the team right on your heals, at home, in March, and a chance to burry them, and you don't show up. I don't get. I don't care that they started a brawl because they decided to run Luongo. Great. Do that in the first period, and set a tone. They allowed the Sedins WAY too much room and they made fools out of Keith and Campbell on 2 of the goals. Just a pathetic game, and going back to Tim's last post, I think that Calgary may be a better option. I still worry that Keith and Campbell will be punished every shift, but the Canucks look dominant right now. Luongo didn't even have to make any big saves. Wait until he wins a game or two by himself and gets in the heads of these kids.

Marty Havlat can't be the only one ALWAYS getting chances. Where has Kane been? Where is this kid? Besides the shoot out goal against San Jose, he's been a non factor. He has to contribute. He needs to adjust his game and start being ONE of the BEST players on the ice. He can't hide. it starts tonight. He has a world of talent, but now is crunch time. He has to be a player that this team can count on.

The Hawks need Toews, Kane, Sharp, and havlat to be FACTORS every game. Not just off and on. I don't care if the ice was bad on Sunday. You knew that for two periods. Shoot the puck, Sharp! No excuses for mishandling that.

I am little concerned that this team looked shell shocked. If they are tired of hearing about it, they need to silence the critics and take care of business. Play hard, play physical, and nobody should be taking shifts off. Play smart. No stupid pentalies, and no defensive lapses.

Huet's first trip back to Montreal, I believe. He has to play well. No cheap, weak goals. I want to see a guy who's pissed off he was dealt and ready to shove it right in Gainey's face. I'm sure the reception from the crowd will be hostile.

Frustration with Hawks

I am frustrated with the Hawks and the lack of a physical presence. I think the Hawks dropped the ball at the trading deadline in not getting more physical. I mean bigger physical guys who can play. While I love the grit of this team they have trouble with tight physical hockey, when it's not wide open they have trouble holding on to the puck with people around. I don't buy the idea of being young and waiting for the future. We heard that about the Bears and their defense, we are young and we can wait for the Offense to develop. Now the vaunted Defense is not vaunted anymore. My point of frustration with the Hawks is they need to try to win now.

Dirt hit

I didn't see the hit on 22....but was it the one that Hordichuk was penalized for kneeing? Anyone know? And if so...it's typical that there was no response on our side. This team is too soft....mentally and physically....to go on a deep run.

Posted by regkerr on Mon, 03/30/2009 - 22:49
Dirty

It looked like a sliding Hordichuk raised his leg trying to stop Brouwer from getting to the puck. It was a knee to knee hit that should have been called in addition to the attempted knee moments earlier in the play. Gutless non-call by the refs. And no response from any Hawk on his next shift. Gutless response from our boys. Good thing they woke up in the 3rd, eh?

Brouwer: his upside

Chuck, what is your definition of a lot of upside?
Does his skating cause you to pause, and think not top six forward? This does not mean he doesn't have a place in the lineup. He is the only player who goes in front of the net, as opposed to the side of the net, for instance, when Buffoon (sic) is on the PP as a forward. Both Brouwer and Bufuglien need to become better finishers; however, at least Brouwer does some other things (screens and more dirty work) than our other big- size players weasel out of doing. Let's just admit it; we need big players to play big. If they don't, then they better offer something else darn good..like a big time scorer. I don't see Brouwer or Bufuglien ever becoming big scorer's. Hey Chuck, no problem if you don't agree with my views. BTW, I'm willing to let Bufuglien develop as a third line forward if someone would teach/have him practice that skill set. I am willing w/Buff more due to limited trade value per his big contract. I would prefer to deal the under - achieving Bufuglien since his immaturity and lack of dedication to work really practice/hard makes him a long-term project. I'd rather give the third line job to Skille. Havlat and his linemmates, if Havlat stays, in reality are the first or second line guys.

Posted by hockeypuck on Mon, 03/30/2009 - 15:04
Because he knows how to play the game

Brouwer knows where to be positionally. He creates space for his linemates. He can pass the puck. And, I'm telling you, once he gets a little more caught up with the speed of the game at the NHL level, he's going to score more. No, he's never going to be a 30-40 goal scorer in the NHL, but he could easily be a 20+ goal scorer, a "+" player and a guy who makes his teammates around him better.

If Skille replaces Havlat on the third line next year, we are in deep, deep trouble at both ends of the ice.

Posted by jacukel on Tue, 03/31/2009 - 09:43
Brouwer's future

I'll agree with your comments, jacukel. Don't know if we could sign anyone as valuable as Havlat if he left. Disturbing that Skille barely hit the 20 goal mark, and I can't buy much into the argument that he didn't have a top center/linemmates. Skille makese passes, had enough scoring opportunities. This #7 overall selection is just not a top line scoring NHL player.

If you go by the assumption that Havlat is the top line wing on this team, then maybe Skille uses his skating and his game effectively on the third line. But I think we need to look at what his salary is if he makes the team next fall. He signed an entry level contract (?) and is that too much for us to pay a third line player, given our overall salary cap issues? If our intention is to find someone to replace -- or we re-sign Havlat -- then you are looking at paying too much for two third line players in Bufuglien and Skille.

Bufuglien is a long term project, too, because he doesn't have the desire to change his game to what he must do as a big-size player. Look, he isn't going to be a big, big scorer and he doesn't use his size often to the team's advantage. So are we too enamored with his big shot and the skill set that he does possess? Probably so. I shrewd GM needs to decide when and how to dispose of Bufuglien. This arguement that he is just learning the forward position, that is true, but it is also no excuse for what he has consistently not brought and consistently will not bring. If he was willing to stand in front, not to the side of the net, and had better skill in front of the net, then maybe I'd want to keep him. This player's skill and value has been broken down so often; I don't know what else can be said....maybe some evaluators who are used to looking at and comparing players can add insight here....

I still respect jacukel although he didn't need to brazenly attack me in a post recently. Yes, everyone knows Havlat is the man...but I suspect not for much longer in Chicago. IMO not based on any other input. Jacukul it would be interesting if you gave your reasons why you feel Nashville will/will not make playoffs. After all, you review Nashville prospects for hockeyfutures. com. The Pred's are straggling for the last one or two playoff seeds. Nashville, St Louis and Anaheim are battling and one of those teams won't make it?

Posted by hockeypuck on Tue, 03/31/2009 - 13:22
Net presence?

From the score sheet Brouwer won't be missed much. However, his ability to get his nose dirty and go to places screening and creating loose pucks will be missed. Last night without him in front of the net there was NO ONE willing to go to those areas.

That HAS to change...

Posted by JJHAWKSJJ on Mon, 03/30/2009 - 13:25
Brouwer's presence Part II

Maybe we can live with one forward who isn't as good a skater as needs to be in the NHL. I still see Brouwer more as a player who can be moved from line to line, but not a permanent top line player because he simply sometimes does not win the race to the puck due to his skating. The positive aspect to his game, however, stands out on this team. We need more large size players to do what Brouwer does. Brouwer appears to have picked up somewhat on his physical play this year. I would be interested in Steve Rain and JJHAWKJJ reaction to the Brouwer comments in this blog, because you guys have both spoken out about some of the distaste you have for the lack of physical play from our forwards overall. I suspect HP53 is too positive about what Brouwer means to this team. A useful player, yes, but not a top line guy if you think you are to go far in playoffs with six top forwards.

Posted by hockeypuck on Tue, 03/31/2009 - 13:32
That's big b/c he's

That's big b/c he's underrated and important to this squad. They missed his disruption at the net last night. This guy has a lot of upside. He had a great game against San Jose.
