Payne gets release from Alabama

Schaumburg senior basketball player Cully Payne received his release today from his letter of intent with Alabama. It was what he expected to happen as soon as Alabama officially hired a new coach, which it did Sunday with Anthony Grant from Virginia Commonwealth. Grant replaces Mark Gottfried, who resigned in January.
Payne's dad Kent said Cully is preparing to visit Washington State and coach Tony Bennett soon. Payne is also scheduled to play in a senior all-star game at Niles North High School at 8 p.m. Friday.

Marty Maciaszek has been covering high school sports at the Daily Herald since 1992. He first started covering the high schools as a sophomore at York High School in Elmhurst in 1982 and received an excellent prep education - especially in boys basketball - for two years in Peoria in the late 1980s while attending Bradley University.

Marty has covered and enjoyed talking with coaches and athletes in just about every sport sponsored by the IHSA. He also is a die-hard White Sox fan who was fortunate enough to attend Game 2 of the World Series he never thought he would see in his lifetime.
