A sad day at Driscoll
One could only imagine the shock that went through Driscoll students and alums when they heard the news today the school would be closing at the end of this school year. But like everything these days in this economy, no business or institution, no matter how long it's been around or successful it has been, is immune from going by the wayside.
Declining enrollment and revenue led to the decision. Now it will be a footnote in IHSA history with a record seven straight IHSA football titles and a 2A girls basketball title that can't be defended next year.
The odd part is I always thought Immaculate Conception would be one of the first to go since my mom worked there for more than 20 years (she just retired after last year) and would always be talking about the low numbers of potential incoming students. But IC has survived and actually thrived.
Most parochial schools likely are facing similar concerns because how many families can avoid the four-figure tuition payments in this economy? Likely fewer and fewer than just a few years ago.
