Freak injury for Versteeg
Kris Versteeg is "doubtful" for Saturday's game at Detroit, according to Coach Q after a freak fall at practice on Friday.
Versteeg was all alone nearing the boards during a drill when he got his legs tangled and fell backwards hard into the wall, apparently hitting his head or shoulder.
Quenneville didn't rule Versteeg out of Sunday's rematch with the Red Wings.
Rather than recall a forward from Rockford, Aaron Johnson likely will play left wing on the fourth line with Ben Eager moving into Versteeg's spot with Dave Bolland and Troy Brower.
Cristobal Huet starts in goal Saturday with Nikolai Khabibulin playing on Sunday.

Tim, I've got a question for ya...
I just heard that the hawks could be close to signing Hobey Baker Winning (D) Matt Gilroy. Do you have any knowledge of this and or anything to report to the hawk faithful about this? He is a senior this year and is 24, and I hear he is NHL ready. Could be an interesting acquisition depending on how much he'll cost.
Toronto or Tampa bay ,who are both trying to get him to sign for an outrageous amount since their is NO rookie CAP restriction on a 24 yr. old.
He may be a be bust simple because he IS a puck mover, but the in the NHL he may be end up clueless in his own end.
Not as great as find as they think. watch and see.
Thanks Sports Guy....i can't believe i missed the terms of Huey's deal the first time around. I'd love to jettison Huet to another team, have the Hawks eat a bit of salary and try to re-up Khabby for 2 more years at a reduced rate. If we could get Khabby for $3 to 4 mil/season, get rid of Huet and bring up Crawford....that would be ideal. Will it happen? Only if i glue my rose colored glasses to my face.
if you ever want to know anything about any hockey contracts or cap situations, just go to nhlnumbers.com... it's all there
Time to play a few farm hands......with 4th place now in the bag there is no reason this weekend to play Keith, Toews, Kane, Havlat or anyone else that is banged up or is staring at massive playoff minutes next week.
I know that means that anyone that sits will have a week off from any game action but I'd prefer that to any injuries that might occur in completely meaningless games against Detroit. If they were playing the Islanders or Atlanta I wouldn't be as concerned as those games would be played about as physically as All Star games, but rivalry games are another matter.
Without expanded rosters, people would have to be sent down or put on IR, wouldn't they? Detroit has nothing to play for either, so maybe we'll get two games of pond hockey. Huet seems to prefer flopping around anyway. I'd let Huet play both games and reverse ice time for everyone, double-shifting Burish when we need a goal. Keith should play 20 minutes all weekend.
double-shifting Burish when we need a goal? for which team?
thanks to Edmonton beating Calgary tonite, so they can afford to rest versteeg, sharp & other guys who've got some bumps & bruises, as well as guys who've logged a ton of minutes lately and are going to have to do so come playoff time for the hawks to stand a chance, like khabi, keith, seabrook, havlat, campbell, etc.
What is Huet's contract....i thought it was 2 years for $11 mil meaning we're possibly stuck with this sieve for ONE more year. But then i read in SI (a tidbit by motormouth extraordinaire Pierre McGuire) that Huet is under contract for 3 more years....which i highly doubt.
Can you please clarify.
Reg..dwebert is right, it was a four year deal, so 3 more left on it. At about
5.2 or 5.6 mill per...what was DT thinking..easy, that Khabby who had taken
a lot of Bill and or now Rocky's beer money and hadnt delivered what was
expected in return was expendable. And could be dumped prior to this season
since it was the last year of his deal, well we all know the story from there.
Huet is also 4-5 years younger, and at the time of signing, was a guy who could
hold the fort until Crawford was ready. That line of thinking seems to have
changed as well.
It is 3 more years. He signed a 4 year contract in July of '08.
say it ain't so DT....what were you thinking....this guy's NEVER won a playoff series.......
Neither had Khabby until the year before Tampa Bay cup (his third year there). Phoenix struggled for eons to get out of the first round, despite some pretty good teams. Imagine when your team's glory years are PRE Gretzky and still pretty pathetic.
Just what we need....the ominous hand of fate intervening with its bad karma. Why don't they call up Beach then. We need a legitimate winger not a d-man masquerading as a winger.
Because they're expecting it to be one game. And a meaningless game at that. That's why. Believe me, I don't like seeing d-men playing wing either. But, it's one game.
