An Easter parade of Cubs stuff

An Easter parade of Cubs stuff

MILWAUKEE _ It's always fun to take a look at the exaggerated numbers early in the baseball season. So on this Easter Sunday, as we get ready for prime-time action on ESPN, let's look at some of those numbers.

--Ryan Theriot is tied for first in the NL in on-base percentage at .619. He also entered today second in batting average, at .563. He goes into tonight's game 9-for-16 with 4 walks and no strikeouts. He also laid down a nice bunt for a basehit last night.

--Mike Fontenot came into today 16th in OBP, at .476, and Kosuke Fukudome was 27th, at .450. It sure looks to me like Fukudome is being more aggressive at the plate. You can do that and still be a high-OBP guy. Hitting coaches will say that a hitter should look for his pitch to hit and hit it, no matter what the count, because it may be the only one he gets. I asked Lou about the aggressiveness after last night's game. "I think so," Lou said. "I really do. He looks like the hitter he was early in the year last year. Let's hope he keeps getting better and better _ at least as good."

Speaking of Lou and Fukudome, it'll be interesting to see if ESPN analyst Steve Phillips pays a visit to Lou's office before the game. During spring training, Phillips criticized Lou's handling of Fukudome last year, saying Lou wasn't patient in letting Fukudome assimilate.

On the downside of the numbers game, Milton Bradley is 1-for-16, and D-Lee is 2-for-22. Both players came out this afternoon for early batting practice in a group that included Reed Johnson, Aaron Miles, Koyie Hill and others. In fact, there were a lot of Cubs on the field shortly after 2 in the afternoon.

--Was going over some of the WHIP numbers for the bullpen. WHIP is walks plus hits per 1 inning pitched. Here's how they look for the bullpen guys entering tonight's game:

Heilman 1.64
Marmol 1.09
Guzman 1.29
Gregg 3.50
Patton 0.50
Cotts 2.25
Vizcaino 0.00

Lou was talking before last night's game how he and his staff were of "the school" that says let the other team beat you late by hitting the ball, not by walking. Fewer things drive Lou crazier than his relievers issuing walks.

On the flip side, Lou is the anti-Dusty when it comes to his batters taking walks. In other words, he doesn't mind walks "clogging the bases." He also points out how walks can turn the lineup over and bring up the good hitters more quickly.

"You can see what walks do," he said. "They turn the order."

Back with lineups and such later.

I would bet that Dome stays in center...

...in order to maintain his comfort level and because he's having a lot of success the way things are now.

Bruce, could you find out

Bruce, could you find out how many games soriano batted elsewhere in the line up last year besides lead off...in the regular season.......reason is last night on ESPN Steve Phillips and Joe Morgan had a friendly debate. Steve kept saying he'd bat soriano down in the line up and Joe kept saying it won't work, they tried it last year, he said that more then once and that he even talked with Lou and Lou said it wouldn't work.....I'm wondering what Joe based his opinion on......I don't believe Joe does much home work on many things.......as for fukudome in right, lol, yes most of us felt like that....still feel that's the way to go if bradley is out a few days....he's a good right fielder, bad in center......

Soriano in the lineup

He batted second for the first two games of the season, and that was that.

Reed Johnson

Gotta get that guy more playing time. He makes things happen...

Or perhaps more accurately

Johnson makes things *not* happen that we don't want to see happen. I don't at all mean to disrespect his getting on base in front of Soriano in the ninth inning last night -- definitely a step up from some of the Cubs we've seen pinch-"hit" over the years -- but for a change this team does have a few other guys who can get on base. Whereas I think it's safe to say that the Cubs do not have another outfielder on this squad who could have made that catch. The Brewers have to be shaking their heads, wondering if karma has it in for them, that Reed was in the game and in right field at that moment. I can almost hear it from here: "Why (expletive of your choice) didn't Piniella move Fukudome to right where he was last year and put Johnson in center where he belongs?"

Wasn't Dempster on the mound for Johnson's sensational dive-into-the-wall catch in left center last year?

Yes, on Johnson

Dempster talked about that after the game, about how Reed made that catch in Washington. We also wondered if Lou would move Johnson to center and Fukudome to right.

Bradley update

The Cubs said Milton Bradley left the game in the fourth inning because of a right-groin strain. He apparently suffered the injury running the bases.

"walks clog the bases"

:-)

Countdown to move D. Lee

..out of the three hole should be "on the clock". Two little taps, and 2 for 24.

Lee is pulling off everthing.

They need to give Hoff a few starts...

Wait

I'm with both of you, but give it until 4/30. The man is obviously NOT the same hitter he was in 2005. The question we should be asking is IF this were to continue is Lee the kind of guy who would ACCEPT a demotion to the 5th or 6th spot in the lineup without pouting? Would Lou even do this?

I'm very impressed with Fukudome and Soriano right now. They are carrying this team.

Not so excited about the bullpen. Nobody can throw a strike, and Kevin Gregg is morphing into Rod Beck. Everytime he comes in he gives up at LEAST 1 run, and has numerous guys on base.

Kendall is the Crew's #1 catcher?

Seriously?

I'm confident Bradley will find his stroke. Wish I could say the same about D. Lee. I doubt the cold weather starting tomorrow will help, though. At least Houston and Miller Park were good warm ups.

Extra BP is always good.
