While we’re on the subject of addressing rumors and innuendo, this is a good time to refute the report, broadcast and printed, that the Bears were planning to draft Ohio safety Mike Mitchell had they retained their pick at No. 49 overall.
Mitchell represented probably the biggest reach of the draft when the brain-dead Raiders took him at No. 49.
The Bears actually like Mitchell as a player. But, according to a team source, they would not have drafted him until at least the fourth round, when they had the 105th and 119th picks.
How do these things get started? Maybe it was the Raiders.
