Heatwave at Conant on Monday

The forecast calls for high 80s and maybe even low 90s Monday. There figures to be some nice cool breezes to go with it at Conant.
It's a must-see pitching matchup when Rolling Meadows heads to Conant in a key Mid-Suburban League baseball crossover at 4:30 p.m. Monday. Future Kentucky teammates Jon Carlson of Meadows and Walt Wijas of Conant will face off in what could be a dynamic duel. In an ironic twist, especially in this day and age of kids playing on all sorts of travel teams together, they don't know each other.
What we know is they are both - as Elk Grove coach Terry Beyna said after the not-so-good fortune of facing each of them - proving they are Division I worthy and even big-league draft worthy. Both will be well-rested - Carlson with four days and Wijas with a week since their last starts, where both of them had 14 strikeouts as Carlson threw a 2-hitter and Wijas allowed only an infield single.

Here's a comparison of their numbers so far...

CARLSON
40 innings, 21 hits allowed, 7 earned runs, 70 strikeouts, 15 walks, 4-0 record, 1.23 ERA

WIJAS
40 innings, 21 hits allowed, 2 earned runs, 59 strikeouts, 9 walks, 4-2 record, 0.35 ERA

Doesn't get much better than that. Fortunately, the weather forecast looks good, too.
