The Bears need a pass rusher and defensive end Simeon Rice, who has eight double-digit sack seasons, is looking for a job.
A match made in heaven? Probably not. Rice’s last double-digit sack season was back in 2005, he’s had a total of just 3 sacks in the past three seasons and missed all of the ’08 season after playing a total of just 16 games combined in ’06 and ’07, as he battled shoulder and foot (Lisfranc) injuries.
“At this point, I doubt we'd be pursuing Simeon as an alternative,” Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said on the team’s website Wednesday. “He was a great player, and I really respect what he did for Tampa. I thought he was the missing link that put them over the top during their Super Bowl year (2002).”
Rice had 15 ½ sacks that season, plus 4 more in the postseason, including 2 in Super Bowl XXXVII. He has 122 career sacks, 12th on the all-time list.
He recently told WQYK sports radio that he wants to return in 2009 and that he would instantly be in the “top five” at the position. He also said he’s currently running 4.5 in the 40-yard dash.
Sure he did. Maybe if he was running downhill, on artificial turf, with the wind at his back, on a 35-yard course.
