It's NOT the 'Crosstown Classic'

It's NOT the 'Crosstown Classic'

Why must people, especially TV people, insist on calling the Cubs-White Sox interleague series the "Crosstown Classic?" Once upon a time, there was an exibition game between the two teams before interleague play came into being. Originally, it was called the Boys Benefit Game, with proceeds going to charity.

Then it was the Gatorade Windy City Classic or some such thing, and then it was the Crosstown Classic. It was one game a year, and I guess it had to have a name.

But the regular-season series between the two teams are just that _ they're games that count in the standings just like every other game, only the excitement level around town gets turned up to "11" on the dial, as well it should.

But Crosstown Classic? Please.

On to more serious matters, Big Z will have his MRI arthrogram today, and we'll know more after the game how serious the shoulder is. Lou says Sean Marshall likely will come up next Tuesday to pitch in Big Z's spot. Marshall worked 8 innings of 4-hit, 1-run ball last night for Iowa. Lou also wrote off Marmol's wildness last night in Tampa as an "aberration."

Here's the lineups:

Sox
Cabrera, SS
Pierzynski, C
Quentin, LF
Dye, RF
Swisher, 1B
Crede, 3B
Ramirez, 2B
Anderson, CF
Danks, P

Cubs
Fukudome, CF
Theriot, SS
Lee, 1B
Ramirez, 3B
Soto, C
DeRosa, RF
Murton, LF
Cedeno, 2B
Lilly, P

And remember, no more of this Crosstown Classic stuff.

It was the City Series

back when Ring Lardner was writing "You Know Me, Al" (c.1914); Lardner tweaked it as the "city serious". It was played after the regular season. Today's players would never buy off on that, but in those days the players jumped at the chance of extra cash.

It will only be a "Classic"..

..if they meet in the World Series. And given Ken Williams' comments, nothing would make me happier than a Cubs win over the Sox. The Sox obsession, both management and the fans, with the Cubs really exposes their inferiority complex as Chicago's "other" baseball team. LOL!

If Big Z is out for an extended time, guys will just have to suck it up. They may not be able to keep up the pace they were on before the Rays' series, but I don't forsee a 1969 or a 1977 debacle if he's out a while. Lou won't let that happen.

Too bad Gallagher didn't have a better fate last night.

Ken Williams comments

I think in a media bias town like Chicago he has every right to express his feelings. Are you aware that by law you cannot own a TV and news paper in the same town? Yes its been on the goverment books for since 1941!Can you say grandfather clause? Do you think its a cowincadence that the Trib. owns a TV, News Paper and a Sports team?????? When and if the Cubs are sold, it may take a few years but it will be much harder for the "cubbies" to be the sweetharts of Chicago. It started in the 70's when Bill Veck owned the Sox and both were in first place, and for weeks on end the Sox never made there front page. Just another one of those "cowincadents" again, hea? For all the fans of Chicago baseball we have seen more than we can count on one hand when it comes to debacles.... So maybe will see a city series?....If you realy are Chicago baseball fan it will never happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOL!

Of course Ken Williams can express his feelings, just like I can. While he's "congratulating" Cubs fan on their 100 year anniversary, I return the "compiment" in kind by saying, "Happy 90th on throwing the World Series".
