No surprise: Marty and Nik won't play
DETROIT - There was a tiny bit of hope Marty Havlat could play tonight in Game 5 at Joe Louis Arena, but he won't.
Havlat and Nikolai Khabibulin both will miss the elimination game - Havlat with concussion-like symptoms from the Niklas Kronwall hit in Game 3 and Khabibulin with a groin problem.
However, the Red Wings won't have defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom or center Pavel Datsyuk either.
Lidstrom will sit for the second straight game with a lower body injury while Datsyuk is out for the third game in a row with a foot injury.
The Red Wings didn't miss either player in Sunday's 6-1 rout at the United Center, but maybe they will tonight against a desperate Hawks team.
Cristobal Huet starts in goal for the Hawks, as expected. Once Khabibulin missed practice Tuesday there was no way he was going to play tonight.
Kind of fitting that this might be how Khabibulin's Hawks career ends - with an injury.

AAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPP, he's gahtt-a groin . . .
(Doesn't matter, injury, bailing or both, he's gone)
Jacukel..AAAAAAPPPP he had a birthday earlier this week,
hope you sent him a card, he stills knows more than Lovie
Smith. And never insulted our intelligence by reffering to
injuries as Upper and lower body. Any coach that does that
during the regular season, should get what Ar-nold told
the terrorist from the airplane in True Lies, YOUR FIRED.
But your right, BYE NIK we hardly knew ya...
Huet played outstanding. Made huge save, after save, after save. Kept the Hawks in the game.
I hate f-ing Detroit. However, you have to respect how deep they are. While we roll out Troy Brouwer and Colin Fraser, they roll out Fippula and Helms. So anyone who thinks you can replace Marty Havlat with a Kyle Beach, Akim Aliu, Jack Skillie, Pascal Pelltier, or Igor Makarov, save it. You need LEGIT talent. The window to win is NOW, not in 3 years. They need to keep Havlat, and replace the Brouwers and Frasers of the world with skill guys that make the 3rd and 4th lines dangerous and take the heat off the top 6.
If this team lets Havlat walk, doesn't replace with any LEGIT top 6 ufas (sedins, gaborik, etc), and replaces him inhouse.....hello 6th seed at BEST.
Walker and Barker were out there for the winning goal in OT. Really sad -- Cristo makes the stop, the puck trickles out and Helm is sitting on the right side of the goal, all with Barker just looking at him. By the time he moves over, it's too late -- game over and with it, the Hawks season.
I absolutely don't think Osgood outplayed Huet tonight -- how many times do we have to shoot the puck right into Osgood's midsection? But, as he's been through the series, he played well enough to win.
I have no idea why the Hawks looked gassed in OT. For being the youngest team in the league and to watch 47 yr old Chelios beat most of the team all the way down the ice and almost score was more than I could bear.
I don't think you will see Walker and Barker back next year -- they proved to me that guys like Hjalmy are much more valuable and we need to look to improve on the back line.
...about Huet, he did outplay Osgood tonight.
Sometimes a goalie makes a move to stop the puck and sometimes it just hits him. Sure, good positioning is part of having the puck hit you, but Osgood had 2 or 3 great chances just hit him. The great chance that Fraser had was a puck that was wobbling, and those are hard to get where you want. Huet on the other hand had to move to make several big time saves. The Hawks were lucky it wasn't 3-0 after 20 minutes and did play better as the game went on. The difference between hitting the goalie with a great chance, and shooting it were he can't stop it, is the difference the Wings have with their significant depth.
Lastly, I was again amazed by how well the Wings transition from defense to offense and offense to defense. The Wings had many more odd man rushes this series and that is the sign of a discipline team, that knows how to read plays. The Hawks have good young talent, but they are missing that ability to play exceptionally well together as a team.
Good days are ahead, this was only the beginning.
Walker and his endless supply of dui videos of quenneville, will be gone. Aaron Johnson being benched from March on, will never register in my head.
Barker is an enigma. Looks good, and then looks like hell. I'm sure he'll want more then 3 million next year, and I don't get how you give him a raise. He's OK, but not sure what his ceiling is. He really needs to work on his shot accuracy.
hawks looked timid and Detroit blitzed them and forced them to panic and make mistakes. Perfect game plan by a veteran team who smelled blood.
Hard loss to take....this is like g-damn 1995 all over again.
He's SO outa here . . .Skille too.
Walker can be my #7 d-man.
Hammer played like that with the flu. I am building some serious man-love for this kid.
They MUST get Havlat back. He's a great player.
The o/t period was a bonus as we were outplayed throughout by a very mature, championship club. Congrats to our lads on a great season. Huet and Kaner came up big to give us a chance and i tip my hat to these two since i've ripped them both on and off for months.
The winning goal was a lucky bounce.....Detwat got a lot of those in this series.... but they are a class organization and have been for years. Barker as usual was out to lunch.....we were at even strength and Helm is all by himself for the tap in. Terrible defensive awareness by 25 and he can go if he wants anymore than 2$ mil.
Kudos to Colin Fraser as well. I wrote here that i didn't expect much from him in a game like this but he was a threat offensively and made a game saving play to deny Hossa a point blank chance. Like i said in my initial post........46 is a good Marine.
I'm sure in the coming days, we're going to hear a lot about how this guy played with a bad shoulder and this guy played with a sprained knee. THANKS to all the Hawks who manned up and played hurt to give us die hards a reason to smile in May once again.
I'd love to see Barker and Campbell find new homes. Together....they've got the hockey IQ of a broken stick. Let's hope the other youngsters on this promising team learn some valuable lessons about defensive zone responsibility and composure. Coach Q had a great year getting 104 points and a trip to the playoffs from this crew....but he and his staff gave some of our more pourous defenders too long a leash and it cost us time and again.
But thanks again to our beloved Hawks. They never quit and in doing so issued a wake up call to the league that the tee pee is no longer burning. Indeed.......THE TOMAHAWK HAS RISEN AGAIN.
The spotlight now shifts to DT. Either he's s--tcanned, or he has a TON of tough decisions to make.
Agreed on the injuries. There will be justification to why some of these guys tailed off so big in this Detroit series.
I'm pulling for Pittsburgh hard. I may be a complete @sshole, but I hope the Pens win the cup the day GM files bankruptcy.
despite the fact he was handing out money to bums like it was candy...it's hard to fire a GM of a team that got to the final four. I'm not saying i want him as the long term GM but i find it difficult to fathom him getting canned at this point.
Stevey...i hear you on the final. I want the Pens to step and deny Detroit another sip from the Cup. It should be an extremely compelling rematch. For Pitt and co. to win....Fleury has to be razor sharp.....but Osgood is very quietly building his own legend.
If anyone thinks Khabi could or would have made that save there at the end of the 3rd period, you're smoking some good sh!t for sure!
That was not luck -- watch the replay -- not only does Cristo make the save on the 1st shot, but then watches as the backhander is lifted and he lifts his leg pad to keep the puck out. I am just hopeful that that last save will give the team some momentum in the OT. We wouldn't be talking OT if Fraser could have buried any of his 3 great scoring chances tonight.
And that shot by Kane -- classic highlight film shot. I have watched it and still don't know how he found the gap.
they showed it on the CBC Hockey Night in canada broadcast at the break.
Oh, versus didn't show it and you didn't remember it, sorry!
You aren't doubling as Khabibulin39, are you?
Huet played amazing. Gave this team a chance to win ALL GAME LONG. Bulin sucked balls throughout the postseason and his numbers back it up. This coming from me, who ripped Huet all year long.
Now I'm sure my good friend, Khabibulin39, will verbally rape me by the time I check this tomorrow morning.
Tonight. And he was kinda rocky at first. I eat my words after the last game. And I am happy for Cristo.
Then why are you paying attention to the game? Why bore us with your tedious ref/league ripping? You can join our friends in Vancouver who think the NHL only wants American franchises in the semis to build the game in Chicago and the rest of the US.
Listen to you guys: the refs are against us, Bettman's against us, the CBC's against us, East Coast bias . . . blah blah blah blah blah.
I look forward also to effusive praise tomorrow for everyone who said this was Huet's audition for next season, since you all hope he fails.
You live in Detroit...dickhead...ain't you watching? Go Blow Bettman some more jagoff.
'Cause they gave us McCrappy again. 2 lovely penalties, none for Detroit even though they continue to pick throughout the 1st period. Great, just saw Pahlsson get grabbed but of course no call.
There's 2 min left as I write this -- Huet has been tested but good and has kept the door shut. The Hawks have played like crap in front of him (IMO). Let's hope he can hold down the fort.
Period just ended -- Cristo stopped 21 shots. What a great effort. Let's hope the rest of the team gets a clue. How many moves is Versteeg going to try at the Detroit line giving up odd-man breaks before Q finally benches him to get the point across?
Good catch Savvyone..0-4 in the post season with him doing the game. I know the
Hawks had to be warned about his hatred for the organization from up top before
the post season started.
as a pylon for Illinois Hydro?
Isn't Versteeg a nightmare on the rush....he and Kane turn the puck over more on the rush than any two forwards in the league. Stupido.
Savvy...the too many men call was legit...but you're right...the queers that run this gay ass league definitely want a Pens/Wings rematch and the zebras will do their part to help Detwat get there.
Who-itt was awesome in the first....Fraser got robbed too.
Nice job by Hammer to take one for the club. Wicked slapper in the ribs.
Outside of the Fraser chance....the Hawks looked like the keystone kops. Detwat totally outclassed us in the first 20.
regkerr,
agreed on the too many men -- finally a few calls our way but what stupid power plays -- we really miss Havlat on one of the units. Kaner has set up 2 really nice chances (the one to Fraser and then to Keith).
We're still way down on shots, 31-20 but at least getting a few shots towards Osgood.
It's gonna be sad if the game turns on some crappy play in the 3rd. Hawks have to be smart and stop looking like they just started learning how to skate when they are in their own zone.
Plus, we have to have one of our non-scorers figure out a way to find the net. I think Kane and Toews will find some open guys but whoever gets open has to bury the puck.
I'll never be a fan....of goalies that live on their knees like Cristo does....but i tip my hat to him tonight. Great saves all night long.....none bigger than the grand larceny on Franzen very late in the 3rd. Terrific equalizer by my other whipping boy Kane. Great speed and a world class backhand top shelf finish. So glad to see us fighting hard this way. Well done lads....now lets pull it out in o/t.
He showed what his teammates said all year: that he was a caring team member. We saw that every Knabby win when he came out and congratulated him with fervor.
He played his balz off tonight and you hate to lose when your goalie is that good.
There is a whole lot more of blackhawk learning that has to go on for us to beat teams who are even better in transition that we are!
They lost that big jerk defenseman to an appendicitis
Is softer than the Sta-Puf Marshmallow Man.
Him and Adam Pardy were Buff's Ragdolls.
Someone sent me an audio tape of the exchange in the locker room of Game 3 between the 2nd and 3rd peiods. Apparently, the "lower body injury" is some sort of gastro-intestinal disorder - a chronic one at that. And, contrary to rumors, Q did not scream at his goalie and was actually sympathetic.
Here's the transcript:
(goalie) "I'm tired of it! Puke! Blah! All the time, puke!"
(coach) "You're a goalie, you're supposed to be like that."
I'll admit I'm a little skeptical of the tape's authenticity, especially since the goalie had more of a French-Canadian accent than a Russian one.
Made up
Have you never seen Slapshot?
Of course it was made up.
Lighten up Francis and rent the movie.
His hallergies to those f-in fanz has returned!
F@#k. I lose my blouse
In my mind, there is no need to rush either of these two - especially Havlat - back into the lineup. They're not likely to make a big enough positive impact in the game playing hurt and could only mess themselves up worse. Case in point: Havvy leaving after a hit in the 2nd period in Sunday's game. I don't care what the docs said, Q was nuts to let him see the ice.
If the boys do pull a win out of Detroilet this evening, then they have several days before game 6. At that point maybe they are ready to step back into the lineup and make a meaningful contribution.
For better or worse, we roll tonight with Huey in the pipes. My one hope is that perhaps Detroilet plays a fairly conservative game, not playing overly aggressive and that won't set the Hawks on their heels. It makes it harder to capitalize on Detroilet mistakes with a conservative game plan, but it also benefits the yewt by allowing them to at least stay relatively close.
Maybe a big, booming but LEGAL check on, say, Zettertwerp or similar to start the game and then just hammer the puck on No-good. Still like their chances - for tonight, at least.
for a second. If this actually happened, there is no way, in this day and age, that this would not have leaked out to the media. I have yet to see anybody substantiate this rumor with a credible source. If you watched the game closely, in the second period, while the Hawks were still up 3-0, Khabi made a save and gave up a rebound that went to his left and right to Franzen who was stationed at the goal line. Khabi kipped up quickly and flashed his left pad out to make a great save by preventing Franzen's stuff attempt. It looked to me as if he pulled his groin again making that save because when the puck moved to the other side, he was very slow getting to the opposite post and did so while still on his knees. He made no attempt to get back up on his skates. The guy has a history of groin pulls, and as a former goalie myself who has had his share of these, it is impossible to play, let alone at a high level, with a bad groin pull. If he quit on the team, I seriously doubt he would have been on the ice at all at today's practice. I assumed it was his groin from the get go and figured he was probably done for this series.
Hawkmania...some media know..trust me..they learned from the players on both teams who told them. I dont think Nik quit on his team, of course Q might have made the decision for him. I guess there is a time and place for these things to be reported, maybe after the season who knows.
But there was some sort of a disagreement, of course everybody plays with some sort of hurts at this time of the season, maybe Nik's creaky groin is hurting and the disagreement sealed the deal to give him some time off.
"Kind of fitting that this might be how Khabibulin's Hawks career ends - with an injury."
So true Tim. I am extremely greatful for what Nik has done for the team in these playoffs. But I refuse to be a 'what have you done for me lately' kind of guy regarding this player. He had way more bad than good here. From all the soft goals, the complete inability to earn a shutout, the massive amounts of time on the IR, to the over all sub-par play (unless its a contract year of course), and let's not forget about the glutonous contract. Finally, and this is most important, he is 37.
I would much rather have Huet play a bulk of games so he can improve next year, and slowly bring Crawf or Niemi up to speed so we can once again build a netminder from the farm up. We haven't done that since Eddie and Hasek.
its imperative that Chicago get at least a two goal lead. They fall behind early then call it a game. Just look at last night's game between Pittsburgh and Carolina.
to knock the crap out of that rag tag defense.
Huet has a chance to redeem himself. He blows this game, I truly believe the Chicago brass sends him packing somehow, someway. His mindset and focus should be to prove that he's alot better than his game sunday and that wretched .820 career playoff save percentage. If he pulls out a win....then I'm guessing that he'll be in Chicago for another season.
As for Khabibulin and Havlat, I think they've played their last games with Chicago no matter what happens tonight. They'll be asking too much. Lets move forward. Chicago will be fine without both players as the young Hawks will be a year older and are all still getting better as players. The gap left by Havlat will be filled by Toews, Kane and Bolland as they're only going into their 3rd seasons next year.
If they decide to buy him out after this season... Can they afford it? Probably...
When a player over the age of 26 is bought out under the current CBA, the team has to pay 2/3 of the money(total remaining value) to the player over twice the years in the contract. In the case of Huet, they would have to pay him 1.875 million per year for 6 years. Because of the way his contract is structured(5.625 Mil per year), they would have a cap hit of the same 1.875 per year for 6 years as well. This could be an option, depending on where the cap number goes...
Not to contradict my previous post, because I DO think the Hawks can win tonight and at least put a little pressure on the Wings, but...
If they are going to lose tonight, you almost have to wonder if, in the long run, it is better for this team, if Huet gets lit up again tonight. I have little confidence in Huet over the long run, so if tonight is the night it ends, maybe it's best to plant the seeds of doubt about Huet's future deeply into Tallon's mind.
I hate to say it, and of course I am rooting first and foremost for a win, but short of that goal I think I might be rooting for a blowout loss, or I guess I could compromise and say that a 8-7 win might do the trick!
I agree with you. It's an odd feeling - of course we all want the 'Hawks to win tonight - and I have been cheering this team on since Tony O's rookie season and have never gone away. Yet most of us likely think the 'Hawks can't win three in a row, so let's just get rid of Huet now. If I knew that his playing miserably would guarantee his exit - and the 'Hawks 'have to lose - " then let it be a slaughter with Huet to blame.
I know, I say all of that, deep down I want the 'Hawks to win, and we need Huet to play well. Nevertheless, no matter how badly we wish it to be otherwise, Huet is not a great NHL goaltender. He goes down way too early on almost every shot. Heck, some of us beer league guys could hit those top corners, let alone the likes of NHL players in the Conference Finals. There might be a few of you holding out - and maybe he flops all over the place, looks spectacular, and the Wings fail to hit those corners - but that doesn't change a thing. He's never going to be a Cup winning goaltender unless he dramatically changes his style and becomes somebody he is not.
I'll say this much. You know how non-playoff teams are 'playing for jobs for the following season'? I think thats Huet's scenario tonight. I think the entire Chicago brass will be watching him closely to see how he responds tonight.
I think they'll be making hard decisions tonight on other players too. Especially the RFA's.
Cam Barker, you listening?
are whether to hard ball them at numbers close to where they are or saying, "Go find someone who will pay you that!"
The Hawks don't lose if Barker was to find a brain cramped team that did offer him a big contract. We can do just fine with draft picks for the RFA rights.
I'm not talking aboot whether they can sign them or not. I'm talking aboot whether they want to keep them or trade them.
Some games Cam Barker looks so good out there and other times I shake my head at his decision making. The higher ups have to look and decide whether he can be better or maybe look for someone else who can do the job. His pairing with Matt Walker always makes me nervous when they're on the ice together.
As far as signing RFA's, I think Bolland is first. He's the best of our batch. Follow this with Versteeg and Eager. Brouwer's next and then Fraser/Dowell. Goalies Crawford and Niemi would be last.
said it takes 300 games (where the player gets actual playing time) to determine if a player is or is not an NHL long term guy at this position.
I think Barker as you said can be marginal and then dominant.
That's why they let him stay and play out the 300.
.....to see how this team responds tonight. As embarrassing as that loss in game 4 was, it was just one game. Sure they're down 3-1. So what. While I'm practical enough to know that the Hawks would need a miracle of epic proportions to edge out the Wings for the right to play for the cup, I don't see any reason why this has to end tonight. It would be nice to at least make the Red Army Team sweat a little bit, and really earn that 4th win.
This team has been nothing if not resilient, all season, and all playoffs long. Since the type of meltdown that they suffered in game 4 was a first, for this team, this season, there is not yet any reason to think that it was anything but an aberration. Just a blip. That's it. Just a one time mental breakdown in a high stress situation....by the youngest team IN THE LEAGUE!
This team that looked so bad in game 4, is the same team that went toe to toe with the Wings in the first 3 games. Let's not forget that while they may have come out of those 3 games down 2-1, the Hawks were in each of those games deep into the 3rd period. They proved in those first 3 games that they are capable of playing with the Wings. They need to prove it again with a win tonight in Detroit. If this season, as so many have suggested, is to be a learning experience to prepare the young Hawks for years to come, then learning how to bounce back from the major letdown that occurred in game 4 might just be one of the most important lessons they could possibly learn. Even if they lose this series, if they can bounce back and push this series to 6 or possibly even 7 games, it would go a long way toward building the confidence they need, to let them know, that they can hang with the best teams in the league.
Here's to hoping for a game 6. Commit to the Indian!
..is as a third line player. He is not a top end talent. He can skate like crazy and will challenge for the puck, plus he can make a pass from the boards to set up a teamatte. But Jacukel is correct if you want to say he is a bust for a top line NHL job. Skille was moved around a lot from line to line last season in Rockford. Nonethless, I
I've seen him play often the past two seasons and he is not a difference maker. He might be a good fit on a third line, and maybe sometimes he can fill in on a top line like a Rene Bourque does (but Bourque can't skate well).
Another prospect AND is one who does everything at high speed, but maybe isn't a finisher, has excelled in rookies camp in Bensenville: name: Billy Sweat. Doesn't look to be a big guy but I thionk he competes? He is a seasoned collegiate player who I imagine would compete with Skille eventually for that third line job. You have to look at Makarov, and maybe Smith from that Boston U Or BC will pan out (but he played without much support, he was the support for young guys this year). Other than that, if you are looking for skill, the best ones also have attitude issues, Aliu in particular. Aliu has moved ahead of Beech skill wise, and Aliu scored some goals that displayed talent late this year for Rockford. But it is Beech who gets it and is closest to NHL. Markov may be a scoring type line guy, not an energy guy who has some ability to produce points. I'm not sure what Jacukel meant in an old post about Makarov being an energy line guy, but if you saw him at rookies camp last summer, this is a skill guy who could transition soon to the NHL. He competes, but he is a skill guy who would stay out on the ice all game if he could. He had a sore knee in training camp last year. Eveyone in management knows what they have in him. Don't go by his goal and points figures in Russia (where they don't give out assists as they do in the NHL). He progressed in his game, too, in the Russian K league this past year. The issue with him is all about $$$. Need to give him likely rookie NHL first round contract money and a guarantee NHL roster spot, no yo-yo Rockford.
This is someone Tallon should bet on especially if Havlat goes. It is a no brainer. Unfortunately, Markov gets paid well enough in Russia, so coughing up that money is mandatory for a sign. And we have lots of players we will need to re-sign. A real headache; here's hoping chicohaWK OR SOMEONE CAN REVIEW THE SALaRY REQUEST AND AVAILABLE DOLLARS FOR NEXT YEAR'S TEAM. Also, one other trend I see for next year: teams going cheap on the fourth and even third line guys, so they can still afford top line talent and maybe even just one f/a sign. Translation to me means this: your 3rd & 4th line guys need to be able to match up in the skating or physical (ideally: both) department with top line guys on the other teams. In road contests this is particularly obvious. Your third and fourth line guys have to compete, so a smart, defensively good, quick decision maker (but poor skater and too small) player like Fraser will have a tougher time sticking around. HP53 and others who sort of like Fraser: he would do well to improve his face off proficiency!
Puck,
Don't get me wrong. I'm just not sure where his top end is. He's a pretty fiery kid and he can skate. And he has some skill. But on this team, especially if it gets better, that could mean he's a Bolland or a Ladd, as easily as he's a Havlat. See where I'm going?
Agreed on Skille. Ben Eager Lite.
to start try to fill a void in the roster?
We are still battling, and Beach (who btw is a very gifted junior scorer-a much better junior scorer than Aliu) has basically been told a roster spot is his to lose.
You make whatever you want out of there.
I don't think the Hawks think any of the guys you mentioned are close to being NHLers and besides, where do you see the spots to fit them?
You don't think me saying they should shop guys while their value is high, that they are going to listen to me?
You can go review Cap sizes of all the teams yourself by going to http://www.nhlscap.com/
Pretty interesting -- one of the reporters says to Q that the guys said Nik looked pretty good today, is he going to play? Then Q turns round and says he's made good progress but would sit out Game 5. There was nothing really he reported on Havlat other than Fraser would play.
Wonder if Nik's issue really is much more than an injury and the rumor about him bailing is true? If that's the case, I would expect Cristo to get great support tonight in front of him, helping our chances of seeing a game 6.
There's a play in the 2nd period of game 3 -- Franzn goes behind the net and Nik lunges quickly from right to left, stretching his leg out. That's where he tweaked his groin.
