No postseason quite like it...
The unpredictability is actually predictable. In the crazy world of single-elimination tournament baseball, crazy things always happen. All it takes is one good pitcher or one hot team and you get a 16th-seeded Prospect knocking out a top-seeded Highland Park. A Taft from the city taking out Notre Dame. Dundee-Crown rebounding from a rough year to play for a regional title. It's also part of the reason the Maine Township teams of 1958-59 are the only repeat baseball champs in history.
There actually wasn't a lot of surprise - including from those in the middle of it - that Prospect knocked off Highland Park. The youthful Knights had been playing a lot better - although they needed a big rally to knock off Buffalo Grove in Monday's play-in game. But maybe some of the postseason magic of the last two years for BG transferred to Prospect. The Knights believe they've put it all together and they could end up at Barrington for the sectional. Who would have expected that a month ago.
In the sort of odd category, saw two college-bound pitchers throw 7-hit shutouts in the last week. First it was Kentucky-bound Jon Carlson to lead Rolling Meadows to a Mid-Suburban League title on Saturday and on Wednesday it was Clemson-bound Scott Firth of Stevenson dealing as Palatine had 14 strikeouts. It was an impressive effort were Firth had a nearly unhittable sharp curve.
