Contreras for Colon?
Jose Contreras is scheduled to come up and start one of the day-night doubleheader games against the Detroit Tigers on Monday.
If Contreras pitches well, don't be surprised if the White Sox strongly consider leaving him in the rotation and taking out Bartolo Colon.
Yes, Contreras was awful with the Sox at the start of the season, going 0-5 with an 8.19 ERA. But the 37-year-old righty seems to have been pitching with more of purpose since reporting to Class AAA Charlotte in mid-May.
Contreras improved to 3-1 for the Knights Tuesday night after pitching 6 2/3 innings and allowing 1 run on 3 hits (and 4 walks) against Columbus.
Contreras has a 2.70 ERA in 5 starts at Triple-A.
As for Colon, he's been erratic all season and that continued in Tuesday night's loss to the A's.
The Sox aren't paying the 36-year-old Colon a huge salary ($1 million), so they probably won't wait on the consistency much longer.
Colon dropped to 3-5 after Tuesday’s loss, but his ERA is still pretty solid at 3.75.
Still, something seems to be missing from the burly veteran. As Ozzie said after his start vs. Oakland, if Colon isn’t “perfect” in his outing, he’s usually going to struggle.
Say this about Colon _ he sure has struggled pitching over errors. He allowed 3 more unearned runs Tuesday and has given up 12 on the season.
