Can Tallon pull off Huet trade?

It was clear late Tuesday night that Hawks GM Dale Tallon hoped to re-sign both Martin Havlat and Nikolai Khabibulin before they became unrestricted free agents at noon on Wednesday. The serious interest in bringing back Khabibulin was a pretty strong indicator that Tallon was actively trying to trade goalie Cristobal Huet and the three years and more than $16 million he has left on his contract. Two teams that need goaltenders – Edmonton and Colorado – were believed to be at least listening to what Tallon was offering. Could defenseman Cam Barker be part of a package with Huet? The Oilers are believed to have some interest in Barker. The Oilers were reported to be in tense negotiations with Ottawa late on Tuesday for disgruntled winger Dany Heatley. TSN Canada reported the Oilers had offered forwards Andrew Cogliano and Dustin Penner and defenseman Ladislav Smid for Heatley. Should the Hawks trade Huet and sign Khabibulin, it would leave Antti Niemi and Corey Crawford to battle it out for the backup job. Niemi signed a one-year contract on Tuesday. Center Jake Dowell agreed to a two-year contract. The Hawks formally announced Dave Bolland’s five-year contract worth $16.8 million.
