Can Tallon pull off Huet trade?

Can Tallon pull off Huet trade?

Posted by TimS on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 01:06

It was clear late Tuesday night that Hawks GM Dale Tallon hoped to re-sign both Martin Havlat and Nikolai Khabibulin before they became unrestricted free agents at noon on Wednesday.
The serious interest in bringing back Khabibulin was a pretty strong indicator that Tallon was actively trying to trade goalie Cristobal Huet and the three years and more than $16 million he has left on his contract.
Two teams that need goaltenders – Edmonton and Colorado – were believed to be at least listening to what Tallon was offering. Could defenseman Cam Barker be part of a package with Huet? The Oilers are believed to have some interest in Barker.
The Oilers were reported to be in tense negotiations with Ottawa late on Tuesday for disgruntled winger Dany Heatley. TSN Canada reported the Oilers had offered forwards Andrew Cogliano and Dustin Penner and defenseman Ladislav Smid for Heatley.
Should the Hawks trade Huet and sign Khabibulin, it would leave Antti Niemi and Corey Crawford to battle it out for the backup job.
Niemi signed a one-year contract on Tuesday. Center Jake Dowell agreed to a two-year contract.
The Hawks formally announced Dave Bolland’s five-year contract worth $16.8 million.

deadline day

So if we go back to the 09 trade deadline. we're sitting with Khabby and Havlat as assets. We must admit that the run was fun, but what could we have gotten for them?

Kopecky

We are raiding Detroit's roster. If you can't beat them, take their players.

New details on Hossa ...

Hossa will make $59.3 mil in the first 8 years and $3.5 over final four. this again from tweeting darren dreger of TSN...hadnt heard about Kopecky...

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:40
I guess pahlsson is gone

That is exactly my thought. If you can't be better than them, take their players and make them worse.

Sopel

With the money and years being thrown around, it might not be unthinkable that Tallon is able to move Sopel to someone. He only has 2 years left on his deal. Walker (who was a great fit for the Hawks) got 4 years and before this year never played more then 54 games in a year in the NHL. There might be hope to move Sopel to someone. I wouldn't ask for much at all. I rather have Hendry then Brent at this point.

Posted by 420Gap on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:34
Edmonton lost Roloson

Tallon might be able to get rid of Huet after all.

Posted by Biskit on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:25
Hossa

I'm reading on Yahoo Puck Daddy the Hawks have signed Hossa. No mention of yrs or $ amounts but probably a 1 yr deal is my guess.

Posted by anothercubsfan on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:00
Think Again

Try 12 years for 60+ million! The initial cap hit is 5.3 million per year, which drops significantly in the last 7 years of the deal, so must of the money is front loaded. They also signed Tomas Kopecky from Detroit for 2 years. Matt Walker is gone. . . THANK GOD! He's off to Tampa Bay for 1.7 million for 2 years. Now if the Hawks can some how, some way, through some miracle, dump Huet off on ANYONE and keep Havlat and Khabbi that would be awesome. The only thing we'd be missing is that one tough, stay at home defensemen (Beauchamin). Could be that Havlat is gone though as there was a rumor the LA Kings were offering him an 8 year deal.

Posted by Hawkamania on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:37
MY BAD

Correction. Matt Walker got 4 years. No wonder Tampa Bay sucks.

Posted by Hawkamania on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:38
Would it be possible to

Would it be possible to really front load this contract in yr 1 in order to get more years?

Posted by anothercubsfan on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:04
Matt walker get 6.8 for 4 years

in TBAY....wow 12 year deal for Hossa..

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:06
Good for Matt

He's not as bad at all, good #6 tough defenseman

Posted by beelzeebub666 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:32
Nice raise there

From $600,00 to 1.7 million

Posted by mitzua17 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:09
Say what you want about the

Say what you want about the guy but he was the toughest player on the team next to Eager. I think won almost every fight last year.

Posted by JebJeb on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:07
i will miss matt walker

your right he was a standup guy..well deserving of a raise

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:10
Hossa its a longterm deal

5.5 mill cap hit (bob mckenzie) 12 years? WTF

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:02
WTF indeed

Could rank up with the worst contracts given in town. I didn't realize Tallon was competing with Hendry for the worst use of big time money.

Posted by mitzua17 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:07
Pretty sure

The Hawks would not do this deal if they weren't confident they couldn't sign the big 3. Detroit has proven this model is the way to build a dynasty, and don't you think a 5.2 million salary is very tradeable if they wanted to move him in a few years?

This is assuming there is NOT a no movement clause.

Posted by Steve Rain on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:19
Did Hendry negotiate this

Did Hendry negotiate this deal? We are not going to have any money left for Keith, Seabrook, Kane or Toews.

Posted by JebJeb on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 13:05
TSN is reporting the Hawks

TSN is reporting the Hawks are close to signing Hossa and also Havlat has been offered a get this a eight year contract from L.A.

Posted by jhawk159 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 11:31
tsn?

im watching TSN ..no mention of Hossa!

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 11:34
Hossa..well Darren Dreger tweeted it

But i cant believe it...im stunned

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 11:44
Ditto

It has to be somewhat reliable and close, if TSN radio and Dreger are talking about it.

Another 1 yr deal for Hossa?

Posted by Steve Rain on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 11:49
did you see it coming

This has scotty bowman influence all over it!

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 11:53
Bingo

I blogged it about a month ago, actually.

Just spoke with someone who apparently spoke with, ahem, a very high level Hawk official in the last 24 hours. Don't know where the contract stands, but the Hawks went into today wanting Hossa.

Posted by jacukel on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:29
No

The only thing I can think of, is that once they realized it wasn't happening with Havlat, they are throwing the bank at Hossa to eliminate back lash. Maybe Huet is still going somewhere, and then are doing more then a 1 yr?

I have absolutely no clue how this will work, and who is going to have to go to fit him along with other RFAs, but this is an upgrade.

I'm holding off excitement until it's official. I'll wait for Tim to break this down. I also would love to know if anyone has any clue how to figure out all this cap stuff. NHLnumbers conflicts with hockeybuzz, etc.

A tutorial or reference, would make a great blog/article for Tim.

I have to think there

I have to think there another move or two to be made for this to happen. How can the Hawks afford to do it?

Posted by jhawk159 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:13
20 million in cap space

According to the Hockey News the Hawks have a bout 20 million in cap space. They do need to sign restricted free agents like Versteeg, Eager, etc. But they should have a big chunk available to sign Hossa if it's a one year deal. Maybe give him the deal I suggested for Havlat earlier. 10 million up front first year and about 3 to 4 million per the remaining years. I do hope it's not a 7 or 8 year deal. Hopefully we learned our lesson with Campbell.

Posted by mitzua17 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:21
you cant just look at this year

and say we have 20 million..next year we have 4/5 core players to sign and what will be left to sign them?

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:24
Hoping for a one year deal

That's why I hope Hossa, if signed, is for only one year. And of those restricted free agents and bottom of the roster I expect that there will be some turnover. They want to try and work Beach and Aliu in to the lineup so someone has to go. Eager and Versteeg might have to move on. Obviously everyone can't get paid big money. Toews should be signed first and then Keith. Kane is gonna be the most difficult to re-sign I think.

Posted by mitzua17 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:33
they can afford it this year..

next year when Toews kane and keith etc need money (lol) than moves will be made..but your right i think something else is gonna happen

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:16
Big 3

Tallon needs to approach them this summer and start working out a deal for at least 1 of them. I don't want to sit here all winter long and worry about it.

I honestly think Toews will go first, followed by Keith. Kane could get interesting.

Posted by Steve Rain on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:19
Toews is first

The captain is a given ...Keith is the one i worry about with all these defenceman getting 3.5 mill (Aduya, ohlund and finger last year) I think all three will be below 6 mill...but who knows

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:22
yeah

They are all guides (cap) and thats all i reference them for. Good point on hossa signed to save face ...so much for letting the kids grow...if he signs than something big has to happen

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:12
You don't have Havlat or

You don't have Havlat or Bulin to pay so Hossa can be signed for some serious cash.

Posted by JebJeb on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:14
Could be a one year deal

Big money. Maybe with an option for next year. Makes sense for the Hawks. Makes sense for Hossa. The cap is only going up $100K this year, but could skyrocket in subsequent years.

Posted by jacukel on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:31
I heard on the radio a few

I heard on the radio a few minutes ago. They are calling the Blackhawks to try and get a comment.

Posted by jhawk159 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 11:38
Hossa

I was on the NHL Network online and I heard them say it as well.

Posted by jhawk159 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 11:51
Tbay signs Ohlund for 22-24 mill

wow..

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 11:35
Desperate for D

They had to pay for someone to play D down there.

Posted by mitzua17 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 11:49
True but 7 years

I am on pins and needles thinking what Hossa signs for (if he does)

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 11:52
Hossa

He scares me in the fact that he disappears in the playoffs. I know he is a scorer but is he a 2-way player? How much of an upgrade would he be over Havlat?

Posted by mitzua17 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 11:57
Marginal upgrade

How did he disappear against the Hawks? Seemed like every time they turned the puck over, he was there!

Posted by jacukel on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:32
Just asking

I just wanted to know how much of an upgrade he would be. He didn't do much in the Finals against the Penguins and in the previous year against the Wings. He's a good player I just don't want to pay big money at the expense of other players. We can only have so many high paid players so it will cost us some of our talented players.

Posted by mitzua17 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:39
if you count durability

than Hossa is an upgrade...can you count on getting your monies worth for a guy who is always hurt?

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:42
Durability Counts

Havlat did play 81 games this year and was healthy until he got roughed up in the playoffs. But I'm all for Hossa after researching his stats and seeing more of him on youtube. Hopefully it's not a crazy deal. If they do in fact trade Huet and re-sign Khabby isn't Khabby's durability a huge question mark. He always seems to have a groin issue. Can we trust Crawford or Niemi to play 30 to 35 games?

Posted by mitzua17 on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:53
Hossa deal done TSN reports

WOW

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 07/01/2009 - 12:47
TSN also talks about..

What this deal means...if its a long term they will have to move salary to sign toews kane and keith..DUH!! and they mentioned the Tim`s story about the speculation of trading Huet (they all laughed) and Campbells cap number (7mill) was discussed. bottom line who would take huet?Jay feaster said he would take Hossa over havlat because of durability but there isnt a huge diff between the 2. FWIW
