Marcus Harrison, a supposed contender for the starting nose tackle position, will begin the first practice of training camp Friday afternoon on the non-football injury list because he is 15 pounds over his prescribed weight of 309.
Last year’s third-round pick played in all 16 games in 2008 and had 25 tackles and 2 sacks. Harrison is expected to battle veterans Dusty Dvoracek and Anthony Adams for playing time, but he’ll be starting from behind until he loses the excess weight.
Harrison cannot practice with the team until he is removed from the NFI list, which can be done at any time. Until then, he’ll be the big guy running by himself on the sidelines and probably sweating profusely.
