Better day for Kane
Monday was a much better day for Blackhawks star Patrick Kane.
The attorney for the cabdriver Kane and his cousin are accused of beating and robbing said the incident was being blown out of proportion and that the two sides probably could work things out, which sounded like an invitation for a settlement.
Kane also hired a top Buffalo, N.Y. attorney in Paul J. Cambria, who said his client didn’t commit any crime and planned to prove it. Cambria told a Buffalo radio station that the fact cabdriver Jan Radecki locked the doors to his taxi and wouldn’t let the Kanes out would be a key part of the defense.
Later on Monday there was a TV report claiming a witness out there who said the Kanes were victims and not the cabbie.
This is far from over. The more the facts start to leak out, the better it could get for Kane.

The part of this article where the cabbie talks about how he was punched and so on and so forth. Reminds me of a scene in a Dirty Harry movie when this punk sniper paid some dude to punch him out so he can rat out Sgt Callahan.
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/hockey/blackhawks/1712001,CST-NWS-kane12....
Next we'll find out this guy got roughed up by someone else...
Reading the article twice now, it all comes back to the same thing....The Small Stuff. ($0.20)
You would think two kids with millions would not want to get involved in anything, repeat anything, regarding 20 cents.
This article paints the picture of Cousin Kane, not Patrick, being the bad guy.
Regardless, my 'street smarts' analogy is dead-on-balls accurate, if this story has any merit.
What do I mean?
Tip The Cabdriver (Street Smarts 101).
If the cabdriver is a multiple felon, how do you know that just by getting in his cab?
You do not. Play it safe. Tip the cabdriver. (Respect given.)
If the cabdriver is a drug/alcohol user, how do you know that just by getting in his cab?
You do not. Play it safe. Tip the cabdriver. (Respect given.)
If the felon/drug user cabdriver sucks and tries to gouge you, tip him a small amount.
(I.E: $0.20).
He will get the message and you are out of the felon/drug user cab. (Still, respect given.)
Then, if you feel the need, you can drop a dime (call the cops in suburb-speak) on the cabbie if he is a danger on the road or to his clients.
If this article has merit, the Kanes made a small mistake and it escalated. Common sense and respect on their part would have yielded no confronation.
(Screw the cabdriver's part. It is not relevant to the self accountability argument I am making.)
Mmartial Arts teaches you the first line of self defense is.........altogether now..........Respect.
Fact #1 - we don't know what happened in that Cab.
Speculation #1 - 'Most' hockey fans don't like how Kane plays hockey. He plays like an arrogant/selfish player. You can't deny his skills - but his attitude and effort do not make him a likeable player. He may be effective - but not likeable - at least not to the older generation. We like players like JT - hard nosed, works hard, team first, etc... and at the end of the day - if the same thing happened to JT - all these posts would be different.
My 2 cents.
I could not agree more.
McDoYa should use this as an opportunity to dump Kandy Kane.
It goes like this: 'GMs, we have to move Kane for PR reasons only. He is a premier player in the NHL and a rising star - but we may need to move him regrettably. We're considered top level / serious offers.'
Cash in while his value is at its peak.
I won't say Kane is a hard nosed player, as he clearly gets his ass kicked when he trys to play tough at all. I don't think that 'most' hockey fans dis-like how he plays hockey. You can make comparisons between him and JT, but they have much different skills sets and assets. Kane obviously still has more to learn about playing a complete game, but would a selfish player think pass as often as he does and set up teammates for beautiful goals? Patrick Sharp can thank Kane for nearly half of his goals last year, especially on the Powerplay. Now, I'm not saying JT isn't more likable, but I don't think you can really label Kane into the un-likable category. You need guys like him to set up things up, which is why the coach makes him a go-to guy on the PP and his PP line is entirely based on getting him the puck along the side boards. In an ideal situation, Kane would have spent a little bit more time in the minors to mature and grow into a better player, before getting the star attention in the NHL.
JT has the "C" on his jersey. Well said.
On the rink, little #88 had better learn there's a defencive side of the ice. One sure fire way to help the 'Hawks '10-'11 cap issues are to trade him and only re-sign JT and DK.
Exactly how I feel not that I am right or wrong, you just portrayed Kane exactly as I see him. End of story, for now......
I wish we could just drop the puck and start the season. Hopefully hockey games will over shadow all of these "organizational" stories.
I heard they were comming home from a 3:00 am showing of "The Bone Collector".
The Bone Collector!!!I knew I had read a novel where the cabbie locks his passenger in and takes him somewhere to torcher him or her!!!!
I guess a lot of these guys think he was on double secret probation and should be expelled.
I can just see the Hawk's office with Johnny McBluto screaming out to everybody, "That's it! One more person F's up, he's a dead man! Tallon........DEAD! Kane............DEAD!
I'm having a really hard time with everyone who assumes that Patrick Kane just decided to beat up a cabbie over 20 cents, and that's the whole story! Cheese, I love ya man but its not like you to be so outspoken over something that we really don't have enough to go on. What if the story turns out to be more like this... The Kanes get into a cab. The driver takes them to the destination. They ask what the fare is. The cabbie responds by saying "how much do you have", and it escalates from there?
The people that are ready to lynch Kane seem to think it went something like this... The cabbie takes them to their destination. The cabbie says "OK guys, that will be $13.80. And by the way, you look like two fine young men. I'll bet your parents are proud." Then the Kanes say, "Oh yea wise guy, take this!" I wish this was an incident involving Carrotop. It would be easier, and a lot more fun to agree with you.
No worries.
I have just had it with everyone who expects someone to give them something first before giving something back.
If it is not Affirmative Action, it is free health insurance.
If it is not a flight credit for a late flight from an airline, it is outrage over an overtaxed flight attendant's non-immediate response to a call out for water.
Hell two years ago at a Red Wings game at the UC, some idiot, 20 something drunk spilled a beer on my mother and then challenged my dad to step outside after not apologizing.
You get the picture....(fyi, my dad would have creamed him. But I scared the hell out of the guy and he turtled.)
But you are a good guy, so let's take your dramatization on the events from Brother's Kane.............
Suppose the cabbie does say, "How much do you have?"
The brothers Kane, who have millions, simply look at the meter, double it, throw it at the man, unlock the doors and get out.
Think about it...this alleged miserable old man sees 40 bucks thrown at him, he stops to retrieve the money and bang! The Kanes are out of the car. Problem solved.
Respect and not sweating the small change. Words to live by.
I wish this were the Phantom's ordeal.
I could have had material for the next year before the drop of a single puck.
....in the example you gave, you would have the Driver rewarded for his bad behavior, but when commenting on the actual incident based on what you think happened you want the Kane's punished for their alleged bad behavior. Sounds a little hypocritical to me.
You missed the point, Dwebert.
And I can not explain it any further from the myriad of posts I put forth.
Forget it, man.
Teach your children well, and hopefully this will not happen to them.
Let's have some fun with this. I suggest that Tim sponsor a contest for the best signs that will appear at Hawks games once the season starts:
This is so ripe with opportunity. Here's a few for starters:
Hey Kane, $.20 to hit someone!
Hit someone your own age Kane!
(from behind the penalty box) Watch out, 88 doesn't like being locked up.
$40 at a juice bar with your cousin
$13.80 for a cab fare
$0.00 tip
Your 1st fight- Priceless
I'm thinking more along the lines of:
Driving on a suspended license - $1000
Settling with a millionaire hockey player - $10,000
Having lunch with McEgo and dropping the puck before the game - Priceless
The 3rd one, not so much.
Like the reference to the "president". That part is priceless.
I can help but laugh if they were caught on Taxicab confessions.....but here is my attempt...
"Hey Patrick, if McDonough was the Cabbie nobody would give a shit"
"It's only a game until they cant make change"
There is no "I" in "Team", but there are four in "Platitude-Quoting Idiot".
'Pick On Someone Your Own Age.'
or...
'My Friend Shirley Wants to Kick Your Butt.'
or...
'Did He Blind You With Metamucil During The Fight?'
or...
Heck, I could go on, but I will defer.
I lit a match yesterday about respecting your elders.
It proved my point in some blog responses....those that said the cabdriver has to earn respect, and that his past is a factor, blah, blah, blah.............
That is my point exactly!
No respect given initially. Everyone waits to GET respect first.
Remember how everyone was so respectful and how everyone looked out for one another after the events of 9/11/01?
You think something like what the Kanes got involved in would have happened during that time span?
So what happened to everybody? 'Me First' rears its ugly head yet again in some of the blogs.
Maybe I am full of crap, but my father taught me simple: Do not mouth off to your elders. Give them respect initially. If they do not give it back, keep your mouth shut and walk away.
He also taught me not to sweat the small stuff (20 cents or exact change on a buck.)
My dad was a street tough merchant who had a small shop in Chicago's ghetto.
If anyone had the right to not give respect initially, it was him in that environment.
Yet during the riots of 1968 after Martin Luther King was shot, one store remained unburnt and untouched amongst the ruins of Chicago's ghetto neighborhood.
Guess who's it was?
Respect given means respect returned.

I tried to hold back until all the evidence came out because you had to have found it hard to believe that a multi-million dollar hockey player would beat on a cabbie over a whopping $0.20.
This sounds like a play by a desperate man looking for a payday. A man trying to pay off possible legal fees stemming from his multiple DWIs. A man who SHOULD NOT have been driving Kane around at all to begin with. How does that go unnoticed by the Buffalo police? What if the guy would have gotten in an accident with Kane in the car?
Now we are finding out that the cabbie locked these guys in his cab, wouldn't let them stand up to reach for their wallet, and wouldn't give them any change.
Ultimately, it's a nightmare. Cabbie praying that Kane will settle out of court quickly in fear of more harm done to his image. Look, I am not a huge Kane lover, but to want to kick this guy out of town, or assume this will lead to his departure is a bit ridiculous at this point.
He's a 20 yr old kid out doing what young people do, and has shown no prior signs of being an off ice issue. Lets give him the benefit of the doubt until the courts decide.
What I am more concerned with, is what is the latest with the Hossa ordeal? Did the NHL find in favor of the Hawks, or are they going to get fined and lose picks? I saw a post on another site teasing about some "Very interesting outcome" about to come down......
Respect your elders and do what your parents taught you to do. Again, we still need to hear the whole truth and nothing but the truth judgy wudgy. In this case maybe our parents would have kicked the cabbie's ass.
Your assuming the cabbie deserved a tip, some dont for a variety of reasons. I travelled the world in my navy days and mostly always tipped (in every country) but some cabbies make it difficult by either taking you out of the way (trumping up the meter) or just are jerks and some even demand what the tip will be. But it is still how 2 or more people get along that determines how it goes sadly....like every situation, we have to get along lol.
we will probably never know the complete story because at least one party is either lying/exaggerating...bottom line
thats why we have lawyers
I for one do not leave a tip in a restaurant where the waitress is not deserving of one. Who knows the cabbie may not like young people and instigated the altercation, very possible but the bottom line is in Patrick's situation he should have sucked it up and walked away. He could have verbally attacked the guy to get some satisfaction if he was wronged but to punch and choke him was wrong. Two wrongs do not make a right. Keep up the good posting and no hard feelings. I call a spade a spade the way I see it but sometimes I rethink my stand and say yeah, I could have been nicer. I lose it pretty quick when some guys are so out of it, ie. dwebart4 view on respecting your elders. Take care.
First one witness says the Kanes were punching the cab driver. Today another witness claims the Kanes were the victims. How many people saw the incident? It sounds like the cabbie was not the innocent victim as first portrayed. Maybe the cabbie locking them in his cab was the catalyst to the chain of events. None of us know. Kane has too much to lose so he needs to avoid things like this. When your out that late at night you don't have to find trouble because trouble usually finds you. I'll bet the bar owners where Kane and his cousin were at are squirming a bit. The local liquor commission usually frowns on minors being served.
The alleged victim said that Kane`s cousin took 100 dollars from him during the "brawl".
So is it still blown out of proportion, i mean can any of you lose 100 dollars and still be able to afford an upgrade to the penthouse suite at your favorite resort or will you be hesitant knowing you might not be able to afford your next bottle of Chateau Margaux?
kidding aside..100 dollars is a lot to most cabbies,,,did he just exaggerate/lie, cuz no one would be robbing me of a 100 and getting away unless maybe Ivan Boldirev himself!!!
I agree with you 100%. The media is pathetic. They should all be ashamed of themselves.
it's admirable that Kane took a cab home from the bars instead of driving. Some other Chicago sports icons probably wish they had done that.
This kid is still an immature smart ass and I am sure there will be more episodes to follow. Anyone who takes his side in this ridiculous act of nonsesnse is really missing th point. I find it hard to believe a super talent like Kane on the ice can be so dumb off it. That is why my idol on this team is JT simply because he is an outstanding person on and off the ice and has respect for fellow team mates and fans including taxi drivers. Sorry for the rant but Kane just gives the Hawks another black eye.
I hate to burst your bubble, but while I was up at UND Toews was busted for underage drinking and urinating in an elevator. Not that he hasn't learned his lesson and become a better person for it. Perhaps we should give Kaner that same chance?
When you gotta go you gotta go. Urinating is normal and obvioulsy he was stuck in an elevator. Hope this make you laugh guys but this is not the same as slapping around an old man over 20 cents. I remember Steve Thomas pissing in public and it made news but not in the same news category as Kanes. I remember Wayne Cashman too drunk to talk getting off the plane after winning a cup overseas with team canada, so what. About the bubble, what bubble calm down and crack another cold one with me.
Oh so it's normal to urinate in a elevator, your a scumbag.....
Hey you foul mouth loser, watch your mouth. Nobody said it is normal to piss in an elevator, if you can't see my humor in when you gotta go, you gotta go that is your problem. This is your problem and not mine. When the Bulin wall and Marty left the Hawks so did a big part of me. I still love JT and like A. Ladd very much but will not have the same interest as before and with a scu#ba# blogger like you why waste my time, you loser. I hate to resort to name calling but you started it and this will be my last post on this site. The Hawks are not going to be anywhere near the team they were last year, the management sucks, they do not have a goalie , they have a cabbie beater and now a loser fan named moots.
Don't worry guys. We won't ever really know what happened. He said, she said, blah blah blah. What has happened has happened and honestly it has been blown out of proportion. (Like almost anything the media gets wind of)
Who cares what Kane was doing out at 4 or 5 am. It's not some terrible crime and we aren't his mother. Young people like to party and stay out late, no surprise. It's normal.
It's obvious that bad decisions by both parties led to the situation, but nothing will really come of it. The NHL won't do anything and they really shouldn't have to. It's not like he stabbed someone or pulled out a gun and threatened him. There are bigger fish to fry in the NHL and in the criminal system.
The only thing anyone can say for certain is....Kane will not live this down. Not for a long time anyway. I'm already picturing the fan banners in opposing cities and the on ice trash talk. It will be interesting to see how he handles it.
It does not really matter what WE think. The NHL is going to hammer this guy. The league is full of young stars right now. They cannot afford to show leiniancy. If Kane gets a slap on the wrist then when a guy like (fill in the blank) gets caught with a naked cheer leader in a whirlpool in the locker room....well you will have to give him less than a slap on the wrist. The reason for that is the latter at least makes sense. A millionare punching an old cripple in the face over 20 cents does not.
....he did something wrong. Right? Because nobody has proven yet that he did anything. You know, innocent until proven guilty, the whole constitution, bill of rights, yada yada yada....
This will cost Kane more that the 20 cents he was shorted!! You all know the good old american way. A millionaire forks over a cool 20 grand under the table to the cabbie and everything is dropped. I bet this cabbie will settle for even less!! Obviously this does not make it right. I hope the cabbie can't be bribed and gives him a criminal record which both Kane's deserve. What a horrible example of Hawk's hockey. If I was GM I would quietly get equal value for him and trade the bastard.
"I hope the cabbie can't be bribed and gives him a criminal record which both Kane's deserve."
Again, that's IF they did anything wrong. You don't know if they did or didn't. You might think you know, but unless you were there, you don't know S@!#.
Actually I hope he does not get a criminal record and yes give him a break because one mistake at his young age can maybe be overlooked. I just hope justice gets served here and I hate millionaires who are at fault just buying there way out of jams. Hope this make you feel a little better even though your posts tend to make me think you wear a Kane jersey around the house and are a little pissed you cant wear it around town now for awhile.
THE LAW allows them to do that. Just like THE LAW allows a normal everyday person to "plead guilty" on a speeding ticket but if they take the safe driving class it won't go on their record.
"Hating millionaires" because they can do something within the confines of the law is just a form of envy.
This cabbie is looking for a payday. I said it before the more recent news came out. This crap happens all the time.
If you're broke and you want to sue some one to get money, are you gonna sue someone you're not sure they have money or sue someone you KNOW has money? He didn't know Kane. Yeah, right. Hometown boy, all over the news with the 'Hawks success then just days earlier on the news with the mayor and the newly named ice rink.
Toews is on the jersey, Winter Classic Style.
JT is the man. I have about 30 nhl jerseys in my collection and my next one going to be JT. I love the kid's work ethic and he is going to be a great leader one day.
My two fav jerseys are autographed Eric Staal and ditto Jeff Carter.
I thought you were pre-med?
Please explain what you are trying to say, don't get it.
Brought out a line from Animal House in response to Dweber's:
"Because nobody has proven yet that he did anything. You know, innocent until proven guilty, the whole constitution, bill of rights, yada yada yada...."
Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.
Have you ever been? yes you have...and will probably be again and will have kids and grand kids who do the same.
A 62 year old should show more wisdom and experience Swisscheese.....but unfortunately no matter your age people act irrationally no matter what your parents taught you...its called being responsible and this includes the 62 year old cabbie.
Age doesnt give you a pass!
Lots of kids party all night, no big deal, agreed. However punching and roughing up an old man over 20 cents when you are a nhl millionaire is absurd. How about giving the cabbie a $5 tip or more and say thanks for the ride.
That's his side of the story. Again, not proven in court. I thought I was in the USA where you're innocent until proven guilty. But I guess since our current gov't regime is doing all they can to strip away that silly document from 1787, it makes sense that people are starting to believe the first thing that comes out of someones mouth.
