Will Dart run?

There is renewed speculation that Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart may run for U.S. Senate.
His campaign spokeswoman tells Animal Farm the Chicago Democrat is "weighing all his options" and discussing it with family this week while he is on vacation. He will return to Chicago next week, but won't put the sheriff's hat back on until early September.
One big factor going against a Dart Senate bid: He has five children, including a newborn.
Certainly his time between family, politics and work is already stretched thin.
Dart has had great media coverage since taking office and his poll numbers are likely high in the Chicago area, but a Senate bid? That would be a major undertaking given an expected fierce battle in both the primary and general election.
Plus, it is not clear Dart has ever wanted to be a U.S. senator. It is known that he wants to be attorney general.
But if Dart does decide to run, he better hurry up.
Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias has been lining up support for what seems like years. Just the other day he landed the endorsement of Democratic county chairman statewide - a fairly big deal. Also in the race is Chicago Urban League CEO Cheryle Jackson.

Why Dart won't run

He's a young man who can win re-election as sheriff without breaking a sweat. Running for senate would be risky and would force him to travel the state (and to other states for fund-raising and other countries for foreign policy bona fides). I think he likes his job and is devoted to his family. We'll see in a few days...
