Kickoff time is finally here
Just as all the high school football players and coaches can't wait to finally tee it up against someone else, those of us who follow the games are just as thrilled it's finally time to watch everything unfold. Granted, our three-a-days are only going to result in a major brain drain, overcaffeinated body or the start of carpal tunnel syndrome, but it's great to finally see everything and everyone you've written about finally go into action.
Hopefully the weather clears out and there are no delays - although after this weekend some more teams may wish they have the new Field Turf rather than a field trashed for the rest of the fall. There's always a certain feel and buzz to opening night - whether it's a pair of state-title hopefuls or a couple of struggling programs squaring off - with fans packing the stands and listening to the bands get everyone fired up. There is always a sense of urgency since it's only a nine-game season which leaves little margin for error.
It's a chance to start finding out which teams and players might surprise people this year on the road to Champaign. To watch great stories that aren't always about the top players unfold.
As usual, my Week One destination is the battle of Arlington Heights for St. Viator and Hersey, two schools located a mile apart. They've produced some memorable moments through the years in a unique opener which has many qualities others don't - a cross-town rivalry that pits the public school vs. the parochial school. I'll take it over Bears-Packers any day.

How true...in such a short season and the magnatude of each game, these mini cross towns, and there were quite a few this week, just get us off to a great start.
