The (not so) great race
Somebody's got to win the AL Central, but who?
The Detroit Tigers are the obvious front runners, but they look to be in complete meltdown mode after blowing a 6-3 lead over the Blue Jays Saturday night and losing 8-6.
The Tigers have lost five straight _ they were swept in three by the last-place Royals and have dropped two to the lowly Jays.
So much for looking at the strength of schedules between Detroit, the White Sox and Minnesota.
After Saturday's loss to Toronto, Tigers manager Jim Leyland kept his composure.
"I think it's a case that you never have the appreciation of how hard it is to win games up here," Leyland told reporters. “And I think we're struggling through that a little bit right now.”
Even though they are still a game under .500, the Sox (71-72) moved ahead of the Twins into second place Saturday, and they are within 5 games of the Tigers.
Even though Jermaine Dye, Alex Rios, Carlos Quentin and Alexei Ramirez continue to struggle at the plate and the bullpen continues to underachieve, the White Sox have quietly won 7 of 10 to stay alive.
In any other division, they'd be long gone. But the White Sox are making the most of some poor competition in the Central, so at least they've got something to play for.
And they've got 6 more games vs. Detroit, 3 at home and 3 at Comerica Park to close out the season.
Can they catch the Tigers? And here's the follow-up question...does anybody care?
