No regrets
Controversy, controvery.
Ozzie Guillen was mired in it again Friday, and to a much lesser extent, so was middle son Oney, who aparently was twittering some blather about the White Sox being a bad team.
Let's take a pass on the latter, and focus on Ozzie telling reporters in the clubhouse after Thursday's painful 14-inning loss at Seattle: “If they give up on me, I give up on them.”
A radio reporter asked Ozzie if he “regrets” making the statement, and you knew what the response was going to be.
“I never regret anything I say,” Ozzie said.
I've tried figuring out why Ozzie is always the center of intense media focus when he says something inflammatory.
It's actually pretty obvious _ how many other major-league managers ever actually say what's on their mind? Jim Leyland, sometimes. Lou Piniella used to. And that's about it.
I was listening to the Score on the way down to the game today, and there was talk about Sox players tuning Ozzie out.
Don't think so.
“A lot of people boo me when when I throw my players under the bus,” Ozzie said before Friday night's game vs. Kansas City. “OK, we play 162 games plus spring training, and I throw my players under the bus twice a year. How many times have I protected my players over those games? How many? And every time I see people on TV talking about me, it's always, 'He talks about his players.'
“Well, if they sit next to me every day and see how much I love those players and how much I take care of them, then they can have a different opinion. I never say I hate to lose, I hate the way we lose, I hate the way we approach the game when we lose. I say I'm a good manager because they made me a good manager, not because I am. But they also made me a very, very mad manager.”
