Ditka for Gov? Don't bet on it
Last week I wrote about the political silliness of so many wanna-be candidates jockeying for races so far before the filing deadline. The point was anyone can be a candidate at the moment because there are no official campaigns. We'll know next month who's been doing the leg work to get petitions passed to actually get on the ballot in certain races and who's just been going around talking about running.
As if on cue I received the following email the same day regarding Ditka ...
In an exclusive interview with Sportsaholic’s William J. Kelly, Chicago Bears Coach Mike Ditka talks about the 2010 Illinois Governor’ race, whether he will be jumping into the political fray, and, in true Ditka style, even takes some much deserved pot shots at politicians currently holding office. “Wherever I go, people always say they want you to run for Governor. What do you say to those people?” asked Sportsaholic’s William J. Kelly. Possibly opening the door to a possible run, Ditka said, “There are a lot of good people in our society who don’t get into politics for a reason. The media scrutinizes them a little too much. I’m not saint, but I know how to lead.” In talking with Kelly, Ditka also used the opportunity to criticize today’s politicians, mirroring the voter angst being revealed in local and national polls and townhall meetings across the country. “Politicians when they are elected, they are elected to serve the people, not themselves. Not special interests, not some group that game (sic) them money,” said Ditka passionately. “They are elected to represent the people of their district, their state, and this country. If they don’t understand that, they’re not good politicians. They’re not good leaders.”
Mike Ditka campaigns for public office are a lot like Walter Payton Super Bowl touchdowns. A lot of people wish they existed but they don't and for the same reason -- Mike Ditka.
It's a pretty safe bet Ditka won't run for the same reasons he's never run -- he'd have to give up too much in the way of lucrative media contracts. But "Ditka for Gov" is a nice way to gin up some attention.
Speaking of which, isn't it about time someone floated a "Jim Edgar for Governor" rumor, again?
