As the White Sox prepared for their final home series of the season against the Detroit Tigers Friday night, starting pitcher Mark Buehrle was honored again for his July 23 perfect game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
With his teammates looking on, Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and GM Kenny Williams presented Buehrle with two diamond rings, one for him and one for his father, John.
The 30-year-old lefty also received a display case with momentos from his perfect game.
“Obviously, it shows the class of the organization, the White Sox,” Buehrle said. “Jerry, going
out there and doing stuff like that. Obviously, it’s a great accomplishment, but recognizing it by getting a ring and a big display case for the house, and then going above and beyond getting my dad one. It just shows you how awesome Jerry is.”
Buehrle's gem was the highlight of the White Sox' season, but he has struggled (1-7, 5.18 ERA) since the outing.
In Wednesday's start against the Twins, Buehrle lasted just 3 1/3 innings and allowed 5 runs (4 earned).
The workhorse starter looked gassed during the outing, which upped his season innings total to 207 1/3.
Buehrle was expected to start against the Indians at Cleveland Tuesday, but he's being replaced by Carlos Torres.
“They are pushing me back a couple of days in Detroit to see if anything matters to the Tigers or Twins, and then they will throw me in there,” Buehrle said.
Buehrle wasn't available after Wednesday's start, but he admitted he had nothing against the Twins.
“I could tell from the bullpen,” he said. “I couldn’t get loose. It seemed like the ball wasn’t coming out of my hand. Two starts ago, that was the best I felt in a long time, and two days ago was probably the worst I felt for a while. It was just one of those starts.”
As for the White Sox' disappointing season, Buehrle said the bottom fell out during the disastrous road trip to Boston, New York and Minnesota (2-8).
“It killed us,” Buehrle said. “I said before we went there, make or break, and obviously if we played .500, we would have had a chance. But you aren't going to win too many division titles going (2-8).”
