Dowell recalled from Rockford

Dowell recalled from Rockford

Posted by TimS on Sat, 10/24/2009 - 11:27

The Blackhawks recalled center Jake Dowell from Rockford Saturday morning, meaning it's likely Jonathan Toews won't be in the lineup against Nashville.
Toews is suffering concussion-like symptoms from the hit delivered by Vancouver's Willie Mitchell last Wednesday.
More to follow...

Is Dowell being showcased?

He's played well this season in Rockford producing points and playing tough. The Hawks have lots of forwards. You have to give good to get good and with Dowell's salary he's got some value as a depth foward somewhere. I wonder if tonight is a showcase? Stan must be chomping at the bit to do something to improve the D and goaltending?

Dowell

Maybe they want to see if Dowell can play at this level so they can trade a higher priced forward and keep him.

ESPN is reporting that Seabs

ESPN is reporting that Seabs and JT are out.

Why not Bickell?

I like the way he played during his call ups this year and years past...

I'll bet Toews is going to

I'll bet Toews is going to be gone a while.

What do you base that on

What do you base that on TRN? Just how he looked/how hard that hit was or other info.? I'm not disagreeing just wondering if you had any other info to base it on.

JT

From what Tim wrote it sounds like Toews is still exhibiting symptoms so if that's the case I think the NHL requires a player to be symptom free for a week. Maybe Tim will update later with more information.

Dowell

Glad to see the Hawks give him a shot. He may be able to fill the Burish role. I wouldn't be surprised to see him drop the gloves tonight. He's not a heavyweight but he can throw 'em if need be so if he can supply some energy and play well on the fourth line maybe he sticks around for awhile.

Dowell Fights

Just scrolling through youtube, of the first 4 fights i've seen him in, he has won them all pretty handily. He knows what he's doing out there. an american upper middleweight dropping the gloves once in a while would be a nice addition to the Madhouse. Timing is good too. I think some of these guys get called up and aren't sure what they are supposed to do. They get caught up in trying to fly around and create like the rest of the team. After the past few days discussions it should be pretty clear - energy, hit, defend, drop them if you want. Its a role we need. Mr. Dowell, play like Eager and Burish, don't try to be Versteeg or Sharp.

Me too

He's not Burish, but he's a poor man's Burish. Also interested to see how Ebbett plays with some skill on his wing.

Cris-sieve-al O-lay

This LOSER better not cost us another two points......if he does...we should ban him to Rockford....we can't afford any more abysmal outings by Swiss Cheese.

Look for Dowell to get into a tilt tonight. Go Hawks.

....

If there was a game to miss for Toews, its this one. Nashville hasn't been playing well at all and this gives him a bit more time to recuperate. I'm glad they recalled Jake Dowell. He's a good player and I felt he should have been up with the big club instead of Jack Skille to begin with.

Maybe here is our answer...

...on Hawks mgmt addressing the need for a little more toughness up front.

Would still like to see what Aliu can do, though. Have heard a lot about him but have never seen him play. Looks like he has the physical attributes to be a Al Secord-type power forward / agitator, but I have no idea if he's ready to play up here.

Anybody know any more about Aliu? Anyone seen him play lately? Looks like he can throw 'em based on some You Tube clips I saw this morning, and looks like he can skate.

Aliu's a Punching Bag

just youtube him and you'll see him get tuned up repeatedly. What a waste of a second rounder.

Aliu

I've seen the kid three times now. Do you know who he got tuned up by? I doubt it. He's certainly held his own in the fights I've seen. I'd rather see goals. He has the skill not sure the mind set. Yet!

Justin Wallingford

Looking at Aliu on youtube...he's actually done a little better than i thought....but he's not a heavyweight....YET.

Aliu

He was doing ok until that uppercut. Ouch.......!

Posted by jhawk159 on Sat, 10/24/2009 - 16:31
They didn't draft him to fight

The kid is - by far - the most talented, physically gifted prospect the Hawks have. Wiz saw him standing next to Beach in street clothes at PC and he looked like an Adonis next to Beach.

I saw him play at PC. No one could touch him. If they get his head into playing in all three zones, he has legit NHL top 6 ability.

He has 3 points in 7 games at Rockford, more importantly, he is +2.

Fair enough

i'll admit...i'm shortchanging Akim a bit.....but i'm impatient....i just want these guys to come right in and do the job....but i recognize they need time to develop. I'll give Aliu this...he does have balls....he sticks his neck into a lot of tough situations...but the next Probert he is not.

Hopefully he can become the next Brouwer. Troy has really come a long way and he has been a real force this year. Nice tip goal vs Van....nice snap shot top shelf vs Dallas.....he's shown some nice dangling ability in the offensive zone and he's always one of the most physical Hawks. The team did a good job developing him and maybe they can achieve a similar result with Akim.

This wouldn't be a bad time...

...to see what he can do with the big club. Early in the season, we need a spark, etc..

Posted by CanesDad on Sat, 10/24/2009 - 12:32
I dunno

I know they really want him to spend a full year at Rockford, because he just needs to mature on and off the ice. He's come a ways in that regard. And I don't think he fills that in your face toughness role anyway.

Dowell, Greentree or Bickell seem to make more sense.

How 'bout we send Barker to L.A. for Matt Greene?
