Toews, Seabrook won't face Preds
The Hawks will be without No. 1 center Jonathan Toews and No. 2 defenseman Brent Seabrook Saturday night against Nashville.
Both players are suffering from concussion-like symptoms, the result of hits in Wednesday's loss to Vancouver.
Center Jake Dowell was recalled from Rockford to replace Toews and will skate on the fourth line. Brent Sopel goes back into the lineup, replacing Seabrook.
Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said Toews and Seabrook showed progress again Saturday from their injuries and was hoping they could play Monday against Minnesota.
Toews appeared in every game last season.
Seabrook hasn't missed a game in three years. Seabrook last sat out Dec. 17, 2006 due to back spasms.

Foley and Tallon together in the TV booth were unmatched for excellence. With Dale's knowledge of the game and keen insights, and Foley's smooth flow describing the action, the games were very pleasurable to see and hear. Now with that idiotic boob Eddie "Stop it here" Olchyk blathering on incessantly, and constantly giggling at his sophomoric attempts at humor, I can't stand to listen. It's time to offer Tallon his old job back right next to Foley. They had great chemistry together and obviously enjoyed each other's comments and company. Tallon's fall from grace within the front office is the perfect excuse for him to return to broadcasting. Comcast, are you listening? Offer Dale his old job back, and quit torturing us with Eddie O., who thinks he's so much more knowledgeable than anyone else. Spare me!
Perhaps Stan could offer a package to the Preds for Mr. Scott. He appears to be less of a liability than the likes of Koci.
> Heard J Mayers dressed up as Michael Jackson, and Komisarek as one of the tennis Williams' sisters, regarding the Maple Leafs halloween party. Good for them to have some fun, because on ice Burke's get tough system doesn't work well if goaltending and defense isn't really good. Plus there is no really star offensive dynamo, unless you want to say Kessel will become such. Idea: if Blackhawks have a halloween party (recall Bob Murray had a really great idea for his party many years ago): someone gets to wear a Bernie Madoff facemask, for all money misallocated. Guess that means either Tallon or McDonough wears the mask. If McDonough, don't expect he would take the blame for the salary cap mess ....which really is going to be evident next summer. Wonder why Tallon keeps his mouth shut? He's a good soldier, keeps a job in the Organization....yet he is to blame as much as McDonough? for giving exhorbitant dollars when, possibly, they could have managed a signing for less?
@daddio> the NHL has already come out officially and said the cap will not go down next year, and may even rise slightly.
A press release from the league and a statement by the Commish underlined this, projected revenues apparently being up for 2009-10.
StanBow is already talking to T/K/K, and we can expect the contracts will be structured for the maximum length allowed by the league.
I hope this is 100% true.
I know there is a precise league protocol on when possible concussion guys can come back.
But let's not rush, ok?
Toews already had TWO concussions prior to him being drafted.
Not that teams shied away from him on their lists but some did have him at six instead of three, because they thought it might be an issue down the road, along with the scouting reports he wasn't a game breaker.
and before someone starts again saying I am not a professional scout, and am talking out another orfice, I say don't shoot the messenger. Check the facts.
Let's let him recover, and even if the kids says ready make him stay away, because I am sure he is not going to say he he still has headaches, or report any negative side effects, because he wants to suit up, being the pro he is.
I would like to see him around and health for the years he plays here and is CAPped....
There is no reason to risk anything against a weak opponent early in the season. The team is off to a good start and needs to keep their guys healthy. I trust Q will do the right thing and only play JT is he really is 100%. To me right now, the biggest factor is Seabrook. The team is missing those minutes and Sopel is only a medicore replacement. He can hold his own, but the team isn't dominating the puck control.
He should rest. Rather him miss games now than later.
He's not a gamebreaker, but he has those occasional gamebreaker moments. He's more important than the "gamebreaker." He's a leader, a team guy, one who does the little things and goes 100% every night. He's valuable in all the facets that the casual fan doesn't see.
does NOT know the man behind the mic. He calls it as he sees it without getting too mushy on the positive side and mean on the negative side. In his 27th season as the voice of the Blackhawks, he calls a game that's the envy of the NHL.
When the team was spiraling out of control around lock-out time, Pat often criticized play on the ice that warranted it. He's also gone plenty far in praise for good play.
Huet deserved the accolades he got Saturday night. He made several outstanding saves and kept his team in the game. He didn't have a 5 or 6 goal outburst on his behalf so anything that got by him could have been a momentum swing.
The last thing a team needs is a homer (see White Sox TV) to call a game.
As for Karpotsev and other Mike Smith comrades, Pat pointed out poor play as well. He didn't dwell on it but did verbalize his observation.
As for Stan, we'll just have to see how he navigates the cap. The best thing that can happen to the Blackhawks is a quick-turn economy and the cap goes up a few million next season, but don't count on that happening.
After years of being a balanced product seller and PR guy on the mike, Pat finally saw the product was degenerating and made comments like, 'They have got to do something about this...", and voiced much frustration before they let him go.
Before then he he was a homer, who called the games well, and didn't spend the time so many other home announcers presently do trying to make players, and their play into much bigger rays of sunshine than exist. That is how you keep the fan base close to the product, online, and on the air, right?
The very fcat that the team DOES have much positive future on the ice now, and can look at the farm as future hope makes his job the envy of the league.
There are bunches of bad color and play by play guys all over the nHL home rinks.
And except for pierre mcquire, most Canadian local announcers easily match Foley, because they follow and report the game and understand momentum change and imo, do as good of a job.
But true the homer express guys seem to germinate everywhere including Chicago.
As the team was stumbling you would have thought there was a conspiracy from the league against the Hawks listening to Foley and Tallon. Now we know there was a conspiracy but it was Bill Wirtz against Hawks fans as he tried to settle scores and tank the league for "cost certainty." Foley is great on TV but is and was an awful radio announcer. Where is the puck? Who has it? What is the score? Listen to one period of Wideman and you get more discription than 10 years of Foley.
before he lit into him so he did hold back what he knew and thought during that time.
This guy was a good skater and had good size. He also knew how to get the puck through traffic on the power play from the point. Otherwise, he blocked too many shots and because of that he was always hurt. Mike Smith traded Brian McCabe for Karpo, which is only one of the odd decisions that qualify him as the goofiest GM the Hawks have ever had.
Not defending Smith, but McCabe dared take Wirtz to arbitration & won - which automatically meant he was done as a hawk - Smith's hands were tied on that deal & he went for a guy he knew from his days in Toronto, who had won a cup with the rangers & played ok in TO.
as for Foley, I like him, but he did hold back on Karpotsev until after he was gone - so I never understood all the kudos he got for his rant.... I saw it as just convenient feeding of what the few fans that were left already knew & felt about him.
foley is more of a homer now than before & I find there are times where he & eddie are almost unbearable to listen to...imo, they have dumbed down their broadcast to cater to the casual fan who doesn't understand the finer points of the game.
Chicohawk's remarks about Foley and Olczyk make me happy that I am following my beloved Blackhawks from 2000 miles away and cannot hear them anymore. Of course, I'm still stuck with Doug Wilson fumbling in his role as Sharks' GM, continually building a team that is pretty to watch but lacking cojones and never making it far enough in the playoffs.
Look at the 2000-2004 drafts. 19 players made the NHL. Keith, Seabrook, Buff, etc and just as important Ellison who was dealt for Sharp. Smith had his hands tied by Pulford.
I wouldn't care to argue about those draft choices, Steve. I'm old enough to remember Pulford as a player, and I thought he was an okay GM his first few years, but he turned into something of an ogre in his later years with the Hawks.
Pat Foley does not take direction from anyone in regard to his broadcast and anyone who thinks John Mcdonough called him to tell him to "pump up Huet" really needs to get a clue. Sorry but that is just ridiculous. Foley has called it as he has seen it forever and I think he was happy to give Huet some positive feedback for a game well played. As many people have pointed out, say what you want about Huet but the guy has not run from anything. He has talked to the press, faced tough questions and wow, actually taken responsibility for his own poor play. What a novel concept in sports. Foley is around these guys and probably knows what a good guy/person Huet is and is rooting for him to do well like all the players on the team. If you want brutal honesty when he plays bad then why mind some kudos when he does well? I see lots of positivity on this site and equal negativity which I guess is life as we know it. Some people seem like they want to see Huet fail or can't even give him credit when he plays well. Nashville lit the lamp 6 times in Ottawa on Friday and they are a NHL team, period. Huet played very well last night and I hope he gets the net on Monday and plays a similar focused desperate style because we need him to be as good as he can be and also feel comfortable playing in front of his home crowd. 6-3-1 after 10 games with guys banged up and oh wait, that guy #81 getting warmed up at Johnny's ice house...Really? Hawks will be lucky to make the playoffs? Come onnnnnnnn

Thanks for the Arabic. What are you trying to prove?
Completely random. Quit reading into it.
Can't be sure, but I think what the writer was trying to prove is that he or she knows how to change fonts. Big deal.
If Toews is out for awhile, I want Madden taking Jonathan's place between two skilled wingers. I like Q, and I won't question him, but I want Madden.
get through periods where injuries affect their core players.
This will be an excellent time for the team on the ice to show what it is made of.
"ONE GOAL" has been handed to us as their marketing banner.
To achieve it everybody has to come ready to play.
This IS the Predators, right? Not the Cup winners?
I will be proud to be a Blackhawks fan if they are able to overcome this roadblock.
GREAT teams do it.
Wiz,
You're right, this WAS the Predators. The Hawks should have been able to beat then handily even without Toews and Seabrook.
As I watched the game last night, I couldn't help to notice that Pat Foley went out of his way to emphasize how good Huet was last night. You think McDonough told Foley to sell Huet as much as possible? It was almost embarrassing! If so, shame on Foley and the Blackhawks for trying to manufacturer goodwill for the embattled goaltender. Sure, it's a good first step, but it was only the Pedators! He still will not lead us anywhere in the playoffs.
I'm not sure that because Huet had a good night and Foley pumped him up a little bit is a reason to question Foley's integrity. Sure, Foley is paid by the Hawks to promote their product. But, after listening to the guy for 15 years or so, he has been pretty good about calling a spade a spade and giving the fans a pretty straight up call on the game.
I'm not a big Huet fan either, but I am a Hawks fan and I want to see them win. It was good to see our goaltender have a good night and to hear that the fans were behind him. On that note, kudos to Dan Roan from WGN for provoking another good cheer from the UC crowd (1st star of the game interview) for a guy who played a pretty good game, and that probably needs a shot of confidence right now to get us more wins like last night.
I also respect Huet for not ducking the press and taking responsibility for some bad performances recently.
Pat Foley hasn't hesitated over the years to express his negative opinions when the situation calls for it. And he and Eddie O fired on Huet last Saturday night after the Dallas disaster. That said, Pat Foley bleeds black and red. He loves the Hawks and wants them to do well. He hangs with the players and gets to know them as people. He's not only a great announcer, he's also a fan. And that's what I like about him.
Don't get me wrong, Foley is the best hockey announcer....period! That is why I was so disappointed in him. He's never done this before. I admire his honesty (remember the Karpotsev rant!), but if he is being directed from above to spread the Huet love, that is not good and his credibility could take a bit of a hit....maybe in my eyes only! For the most part, Hawk fans are extremely knowledgeable, so Foley should just continue telling like it is!
After all those boos for his crappy play, it was sure nice to hear all the hip hip, huets for him as number one star.
Whether you have bought in that he is the man or not, he might have gotten the confidence injection he needed due to all around excellent team play and also a couple of great puck slides.
At this point, I again have Nashville Coach Trotz in my thoughts because it certainly isn't much forward scoring there and his organization hasn't traded dee surplus to get any.
if there are more than 3 games without jonny or brooks we are in trouble.
Without Toews, Seabrook and no goalie I think trouble is already here. Top forward, top four dman and nobody in goal is a recipe for disaster. The projected lines with Madden as number two center is also puzzling. Ladd should be on the second line with Bolland. Good call leaving Skille down and not recalling him yet because when he comes back after month or so in the AHL he will be hungrier to succeed. If he can not cut it or if coach Q has issues with him please trade him because there are teams out there that like his potential. I think that is one reason he has not been moved because there is a good chance he will succeed elsewhere and senior hawks management does not want to look bad. I predict a wide open game tonite and if the goaltending on either side does not step up it could be a high scoring affair.
because everyone just gets moved around so much.
Madden, the biggest UFA signing, can play on lines 1-4 without much adjusting and is having the time of his life.
Diminutive Andrew Ebbett is more suited on a scoring line as a recipient of rebounds, passes, and jump ons.
Good thing Ladd was where he was last night for sure.
I agree that there probably been a reluctance by the organization to launch their early draftees, much like they kept Blunden for a bit longer despite his pro contract mirroring Skilles moneywise.
In may we reach the Cap event horizon and unless everyone takes a lot less than market price, it might be smart business to decide soon on many of the minor and nhl pros in order to plan a protective strategy. (I know-rehash blah-blah)
Nashville wishes they could be in a high scoring affair, but you have to have scorers to do that.
Two key cogs on the shelf for Lord who knows how long. A lack of quality defenders on the blue line and two goalies who are one red light away from hitting the shrink's couch.
Blowman should start acting like a GM and swing a deal instead of playing with himself and the Rockford hotline. He's a stiff just like his old man....but his old man KNEW hockey. The son i'm not so sure.
No question these two guys will be missed, but let's not panic. Sopel and Hendry are two good journeymen, and NOW IS THE TIME FOR CAMPBELL TO STEP UP. Up front, thank goodness they grabbed Madden, and I hope Ebbett starts eating up some minutes out there. The more minutes he gets the more assists he will pile up. It's time for Kopecky to get more minutes, too. I am not willing to start crying yet, but I will still be very happy when Toews and Seabrook return.
His "old man" knew coaching, but he stunk as a GM, so I hold no hope for the annointed one. After what they did with McDonut to Tallon, he should watch his back. Al McIsaac is chomping at the bit to take his job. Karma is a b***h and it's going to boomerang right back at them.
Scotty was a good coach...it didn't hurt that he INHERITED stacked Habs, Pens, and Wings teams....that didn't hurt at all.
When Sr. was a GM in Buffalo and tried to build the Sabres into a contender...he was USELESS...so Old Time Hawk Fan...you're dead on and thanks for bringing up that point.
I can't see jr. being turfed anytime soon....he's only been on the job a few months but if you ask me.....he's done F ALL so far but save the team a few nickels and dimes with Skille being the yo-yo man. Dollar Bill would be blushing at this tactic.
to read how useless Bowman sr. was as a GM from hawk fans who have really short memories & don't remember that Pulford's Chicago (with Savard, Larmer, Secord, Wilson, etc.) actually had a worse record than Bowman's Buffalo teams.
Bowman Sr most certainly was a better coach than he was a GM, and the teams he coached were stacked - but anyone every wonder why those teams picked him to coach???
Montreal hired him away from St. Louis after he led the expansion Blues to 3 Cup finals appearances - primarily because he was the guy responsible for the Blues taking Glenn Hall in the expansion draft from the Hawks (& Hall proceeded to lead that team, even winning the Conn Smythe one year despite being swept in the finals).
He sort of fell into the Pittsburgh job when Johnson passed away, but when Illitch was desperate to win a cup in Detroit after having failed several times with very good teams, who did he pursue to coach?
the guy has a great hockey mind & he is still very much up on the game & many of its players despite his age - the savard firing has his handwriting all over it, (which was net positive for this team) & the Tallon demotion the same.
it remains to be seen how Stanley navigates the cap problems, and we won't have long to wait to find out, but overall, the hawks haven't had proven hockey people like Bowman Sr. running the team for over 15 years. I'll cut them a lot more slack than some people around here.
Didn't see tons of games with him as the Montreal head coach but I don't remember ever watching a Scotty Bowman team and thinking that he didn't have the best team on the ice in Pittsburgh and Detroit. Detroit, pre lockout, always spent the most and had in my opinion the most talent.
Too early to bash Stan as a GM. Growing up around it all is a huge plus for him. Most guys I know who grow up around a business have tremendous perception of what is essential. Also he has taken it to the management side of things as opposed to coaching which may indicate that he's his own man as opposed to trying to one up or idolize his father.
I disagree with Wiz and think the Toronto pick deal was decent. I know Toronto has depth on D which the Hawks are going to need to stabilize as the playoffs approach. I'm hoping the draft pick deal included some type of last look at the inevitable Kaberle salary dump near the deadline or sooner.
I'm looking forward to seeing how Stan navigates the next 10 months. I've listended to him talk about hockey on the podcasts and he''s my favorite of the Pulford, Tallon, Smith, Bob Murray I've heard through the years.
