Future not bright after Packers sweep

Future not bright after Packers sweep

Posted by Bob LeGere on Mon, 12/14/2009 - 01:20

After Sunday's loss completed a season sweep by Green Bay, the Bears are now 7-5 against the Packers under Lovie Smith.

The Packers had won 18 of 20 against the Bears before Smith took over in 2004, and they swept the Bears in each of the three seasons before Smith arrived.

"It's the situation we're in right now," Smith said. "The season hasn't turned out exactly the way we'd like. We don't know exactly how to respond to it, but we'll just have to do something about it in the future."

The Bears are in Baltimore next to face the 7-6 Ravens, who dismantled the Lions 48-3 on Sunday, rushing for 308 yards and holing Detroit to 229 total yards.

After that, the Bears return home to meet the 11-2 Vikings before finishing up against the 2-11 Lions in Detroit.

THE MESS THAT IS OUR CHICAGO BEARS

IT STARTS AT THE TOP..if the McCaskeys were smart and for the most part they are not. They should start with getting rid of Team President Ted Phillips, who did a nice job on the stadium deal, finishing it off when Michael could not after years of trying. But he is still living off of that, that deal was done some nine years back, he has brought nothing to the table ever since. GM Jerry Angelo MUST GO, he is still livng off of...well nothing. He over pays players like Brian "the baby" Urlacher (please trade now), Tommie (I make one player per game) Harris. While I like Robbie Gould, teams do not sign kickers to what 5-6 year deals. His drafting is awful, always drafts defense, which is why the offense is in shambles. Gaines Adams, wasted next years second rd. pick there, gave up too much for Jay "Mr Interception" Cutler. Jerry has done nothing, plus he hired the worst coach in Bears history Lovie Dovie Smith. Lovie shows no emotion and looks lost every single game. He is not a head coach and he knows it and can't call defenses, his assistants are awful. Ron Turner might not be a great coach or O-Cord, but he has nothing to work with. I would hate to have to draw up a game plan to score points in the NFL, with no- O-line, bad receivers. Not much in the back field, and a QB who will throw picks at high rate with a good line, and bunch more picks when he has no time to throw which is always.
The D-Line is old and slow, the LB's outside of Briggs and maybe Hillenmeyer are question marks, the secondary YUCK. Teams don't have to find peanuts guy anymore, because they can find Bowmans guy just as wide open. Or Vashers guy wide open, or Manning's guy wide open, or Afalava's guy open etc. Special teams are average since hester was moved off them, to make more money (thanks Jerry) as a wide receiver who still doesn't know the play book. I bet Cutler just tells him, go out, or go deep and I'll look for you. Maybe you can draw a flag or a Pass interference call. The flag wavers suck, the drummer boys suck, we need the Honey Bears back. The halftime mascots game is a joke, like Staley the mascot is too. The field condition is as bad as the team, the security nigthmare to walk into a game is a joke, the constant threats over the PA you hear while walking into the game are awful. Lets treat our season ticket holders like they are all fellons. FAN FRIENDLY MY A$$. Report unbearable behavior, well call security, that behavior is on the field. No atmosphere at the game either, just BOOOOOOOOOing that is deserved. CLEAN HOUSE NOW..TIM you are not a bad fan, many others are thinking just the way you are.

am I a bad fan?

Sunday I realized that I feel bad that I am taking delight in the Bears loosing, especially to the Packers. In fact, my Christmas wish is for the Bears to lose the remainder of the games on their schedule. It is my belief, this is the only way that the ownership of the Chicago Bears will be forced to take action. I simply cannot cheer for a team being managed by Jerry Angelo and coached by Lovie Smith and staff. The widespread dismissal of the current staff should have been obvious last month, as they continually been unable to compete with the upper to mid level teams in the NFL. Action by the Bears ownership is required. The Bears are a sloppy, talent-starved, undisciplined football team. What little talent they do have, seems to get buried on the bench.

So I feel like a bad fan because of my wish. But I feel that this is the only way Bears ownership will feel the pressure to make much needed changes in the day-to-day operations of this team. A lack of movement by the Bears ownership will only make my wish continue. Or even worse, make me not care at all.

Am I a bad fan

NO! you hit the nail right on the head. Chicagoians should rebel against the bears unless changes are made, and all the bears have done since LOVIE came to chi is go down hill, they play like a bunch of corpses. DEAD! I couldn't agree with you more

bad fan?

a part of me was wishing the same thing. Angelo is a clown who has scuttled this team and I don't trust him to find/sign the free agents needed to fix this mess next year; assuming the McClaskey's would let him spent the money.

The Bears started this year with $15m in space. There's no exceuse for that in this market.

future is abyssmal

with 100 million into a cover 2 defense and a coach with a huge contract who believes in a dead system you better believe the future is bleak. Try adding in hardly any draft picks. The only thing stopping the packers from a SB in 3 years is the possibility of an uncapped year in 2010. Minnesota will be in the hunt next yr as well. The only saving grace for the bears is the prospect of an uncapped 2010 being in the second largest market in the nfl. But, the bears dont utilize the salary cap now so there is no hope. None. not until maybe 2012

This game had nothing to do with how the future looks

If the Bears would have won this game would the future for this team been bright?? No one that has watched them this year would answer that question yes.

I believe the team has some nice role players. They have some above average players in Briggs, Urlacher, Forte and maybe one or two others. But other than Cutler they don't appear to have any Pro Bowl talent and that combined with awful coaching is what dims the future brightness. The money that the McCaskeys would have to pay out to Angelo and Smith is the only reason that they would not be launched after missing the playoffs for three staright seasons. Nobody survives three straight seasons of missing the playoffs in today's NFL, yet here we are presuming that the ownership won't eat their mistakes and will instead compound their blunders of extending these contracts by keeping these guys around another year or two so they won't get paid to do nothing.

This fact is what makes the future look a bit bleak. And the fans deserve better.

The walking money for Smith

The walking money for Smith and Angelo should be bumped up against the $15m in unspent salary cap space the Bears had to start the season.

I think he meant..

...the immediate future (games) don't look very bright for the Bears.

But yes, to your point and the bigger picture, it doesn't look bright either. Looks downright bleak. And I agree - three straight non-playoff years after reaching the SUPER BOWL? Changes are needed but doubtful due to who owns the team. This will also be the 10th non-winning season out of the last 14. Horrible. THAT points to all parties above whomever the head coach is.
