Hire Martz now

Hire Martz now

If I were Lovie Smith and knew my continued employment hinged on making the playoffs next season, which it does, I’d have hired Mike Martz as my offensive coordinator yesterday.

Martz will never win any Mr. Congeniality awards because he’s too arrogant and self-centered. But he could win an award for assistant coach of the year, get more out of quarterback Jay Cutler than Ron Turner did and save the jobs of Lovie, Jerry Angelo and everyone else on the staff.

Smith knows he needs to win in 2010, and if the Bears aren’t in the playoffs a year from now, Angelo will need some asbestos boxers to shield him from the hot seat he’ll be sitting on. There are rumors that Lovie wants Martz but Angelo is not yet on board with the hire. Bottom line, no one the Bears have interviewed or tried to interview has the resume that Martz brings.

Martz may not work and play well with others, but he’ll put points on the board and fannies in the seats at Soldier Field. And then Lovie and the Bears can focus on hiring a defensive coordinator before training camp starts.

Really?

Isn't Martz's offense predicated on 5 and 7 step drops? And doesn't it rarely use TEs?

The O-line can't protect Cutler on a 3 step drop, and now they're going to have to protect him for a 7? That outta end well.

And it's probably also a good idea to hire a OC who doesn't use TEs, since the WR core is so talented...wait...what?

Agreed

Martz is a has been/never was that will get Cutler killed.

Besides, a one and done playoff appearance next season would be the worst thing that could possibly happen to this team. In fact unless they win the Super Bowl, anything that saves Angelo and Smith's jobs will be disaster of a season as far as I'm concerned. I'm hoping they have to resort to some unknown High School type for the coordinator positions. I'm rooting for 0-16. Just to embarrass the crap out of this team and force wholesale change from Lovie Smith all the way up to Ted Phillips. I won't be happy until they are all fired.

Asbestos Boxers

lol Bob....great post...and so true. This process has been a bloody joke. The organization is a punchline. And the guy they should have hired all along has been standing on the sideline like a wallflower at a high school dance.

Martz and Cutler are potentially toxic but we know they will score points. I hope Jerry Angela acts fast or he will need new gitch.
