Williams to address Damon...on Sunday
Let's connect the dots on this one.
In his first public comment on rumors linking free-agent outfielder Johnny Damon to the White Sox, general manager Kenny Williams on Thursday morning told the Daily Herald: “I will talk about this on Sunday.”
The Detroit Tigers, meanwhile, have already offered Damon a reported two-year, $14 million contract.
And the Tigers have an empty locker waiting for Damon at the spring training camp in Lakeland, Fla. Sounds like he's going to be signing with Detroit in the next day or two.
Williams has a history of ignoring media requests when he's on the verge of making a trade or signing a free agent.
By saying he'll talk about Damon on Sunday _ the day pitchers and catchers report to the Sox' training camp in Glendale, Ariz. _ Williams might already know the 36-year-old outfielder is close to signing with the division rival Tigers.
Or, maybe Williams knows Damon's agent, Scott Boras, is going to take even more time before agreeing to any deal.
We'll keep you updated on the situation.

Kenny withdrew his offer to Damon when he recognized Damon/Boras was just going to take the highest offer. That is the correct move. If Damon simply wants money then he can go and enjoy his time losing in Detroit. Nice job getting involved and trying but Damon had other intentions.
I see nothing in Kenny's remarks, that says Detroit will be signing Damon soon. If anything, Kenny is being his usual deceiving self, and not saying anything. That has been his common practice since day one, and I see nothing that leads me to believe he has changed. So until an announcement is made on the contrary, Damon is still fair game. It has already been said, that Damon's wife, wants no part of living in Detroit, so to me, that is a strile againt the Tigers. And it has also been said, that Boras works for Damon, not the other way around, so I don't see the money, as being the deciding factor either. I will just sit back, and see what happens, come Sunday. Kenny has had surprises in the past, this could be another one.
Jeez, by that rationale, one can say that he's signing with the White Sox. This seems like a poor attempt at gaining readers of the blog. A coin flip would be just as accurate. What has happened to scooping & reporting the news? This is baseless speculation no better than a faceless message board.
Williams didn't take a risk. A risk would have been topping the Tiger offer, trusting that the team will bring in more money in ticket sales through Damon's performance. Williams is saying here, I don't think my team is going to make the playoffs and I can't invest further in them. So far the Twins and potentially the Tigers are going to get offensively better and we are stuck with Kotsay and Jones who has barely hit .200 since the crackdown on steroids.
I'm not saying that Damon does or doesn't sign here....but I wouldn't draw any conclusions based upon clean lockers like Mr. Gregor here.
I know a steaming pile of hoo-ha when I see one, and this blog is stink-bomb!
What are you talking about? Let me get this straight.
It is widely believed Damon's decision comes today or tomorrow - CHECK.
Kenny never talks about deals publicly until they are done - CHECK.
Kenny says he doesn't want to talk about Damon until Sunday, a couple of days after Damon is said to be deciding - CHECK
And this means Kenny knows the Tigers win the sweepstakes for Damon? How on Earth is that connecting dots? It's actually more accurate to say "Let's twist the dots up in a mish-mash of gobbily gook, throw some dook ee on the wall, and pretend we know what's going on, in order to drive traffic to the blog."
If you're going to make stuff up, at least be consistent in following your own assumed facts. Dear Lord.
I'm not making anything up.
I made the assumption that Damon is going to sign with the Tigers because Kenny Williams never says anything, no matter how brief, when he's closing in on acquiring a player.
And this is still about money, and Damon's agent (Scott Boras) likes to get as much as he can.
Whether Damon takes Detroit's money or not it was a nice aggressive move by Williams. Damon was a player that fit the makeup of the team and what they were looking to do. I don't want to watch Kotsay and Jones get 600 combined ABs but there isn't much left now.
