Hawks acquire defenseman Boynton

Hawks acquire defenseman Boynton

Posted by TimS on Tue, 03/02/2010 - 18:49

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman collected another veteran defenseman Tuesday night, sending future considerations to the Anaheim Ducks for Nick Boynton.

In the last two weeks now, Bowman has signed Jassen Cullimore and traded for Boynton and Danny Richmond.

Boynton was assigned to Rockford, where Richmond and Cullimore are as well.

Is Bowman simply stockpiling defense depth for the playoffs, or is there something else he is working on involving a defenseman prior to Wednesday’s 2 p.m. trade deadline?

There continued to be rumors involving Hawks goaltender Cristobal Huet possibly being on the move.

Various rumors have Huet going to the Islanders, Toronto or Florida with the Hawks attempting to acquire either Tomas Vokoun from the Panthers or Dwayne Roloson from the Isles.

It would be an accomplishment of importance in helping solve the team's salary cap problems for next year if Hawks general manager Stan Bowman could find a team willing to take Huet and the $5.625 million hit remaining on his contract for the next two years.

The Islanders certainly have enough cap space to accommodate Huet's contract, and they have goalie issues going forward with Rick DiPietro's health always a big problem and Martin Biron signed only through this season.

Would the 40-year-old Roloson, who is signed through next year, be an upgrade in goaltending for the Hawks? Roloson is an excellent goaltender, underrated, in my opinion, "a battler," according to an Islanders source who believes Roloson could help the Hawks win a Stanley Cup.

But Vokoun would be a better fit, if the Hawks could land him.

Roloson started Tuesday’s game against the Hawks at Nassau Coliseum.

John Madden, Ben Eager and Brent Sopel all returned to the Hawks’ lineup. Colin Fraser and Jordan Hendry were the healthy scratches.

Great post interview on TSN explaining Tomas Kaberle and his no trade clause. What a classy guy

Why isnt he in Chicago?

Cdubie: Truer words could never be spoken my friend regarding Huets contract! I said the samething when the conversation was first broached!

Per Bob McKenzie

Chicago closed up for the day....

Whatever. This team implodes due to the glaring holes, heads better role. If Tallon was fired because of a paperwork issue, then daddy's boy better be canned if Niemi or Huet cost this team in the playoffs.

What a joke.

Posted by Steve Rain on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 15:16
daddy's boy

Didn't sign Niemi nor Huet and his inflated contract that nobody wants. Can't blame Bowman for not being able to mop up Tallons mess!

Posted by Cliff88 on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 15:48
I think that's a bit extreme

If Bowman stood pat with Huet's contract at 2-4mil, it'd be different. His hands were tied. Nobody wanted Huet's contract, which Bowman didn't offer back in 08. With only 500k in cap space, what else could you possibly do to get a goaltender? NYI wouldn't give up Roloson for someone like Sopel. They weren't going to send Huet to RFD, so this really doesn't surprise me. What does surprise me is that there wasn't a #6 defenseman or #4 center traded for.

The goalies we have now just need to build up some confidence and consistency. The ability is there, but we haven't seen enough of it.

Glaring HoleS?

Can you idntify the "glaring holes", your geniusness? I don't see any. Could we use an upgrade at goalie? Sure, but that's about it. And it's "roll" not "role" (heads better roll). You bitch about Hendry, you bitch about Tallon, now you bitch about Bowman. I think that you think you could do a better job running a team than any of them, don't you?

You're the joke.

Go Back

To being the pathetic, mindless apologist you are.

Holes: Physical defenseman, and a goalie.

All have been hammered home by any media outside of Chicago.

How ironic...

Mindless and pathetic are always the first two words that come to mind whenever I read something you've posted. Oh wait, there's a third word - drooling.

Tonight...

Tonight will tell a lot about this team. The management stood pat so obviously they felt this team is good enough as it is. Maybe the prices were too big or maybe they really didn't feel they needed to do anything. After laying a huge egg last night let's see how they play against Edmonton and then Vancouver. The Caps sure didn't sit on the team they have even though they are at the top. I am disappointed but I want to see what the team's response is the next two games. I know these next two games don't mean much when your ultimate goal is the Cup but if they don't come out and show the form they had at the beginning of the year there will be screams about lack of movement today.

Hoping for the best.

Higher interest

In watching them face Vancouver to give us a sign of how they're going to approach the last leg of the season with the team in place. Let's be real here, Edmonton isn't much of a hockey club, a team the Wolves would give a run for their money. The Islanders although better, also aren't much of a hockey club either.

I want to see us beat the tar out of the Canucks. (Kesler is now again our enemy!)

Trade Deadline

Maybe all the trade talk was a distraction for the team. Now that it's over and none of them have to be worried about getting traded they can relax and just focus on playing.

Posted by jhawk159 on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 15:41
I agree

MacT on TSN said that he thinks the Hawks may react favorably to this tonight. Not making a move today might be a bode of confidence from management to the players.

Hopefully Steeger and Huet come back strong down the stretch after their names were being tossed around so much.

Were they ever open for

Were they ever open for business today?

Mac Dunough(msp?) is a cub. The Hawks have slept with the cubs. The Hawks are going nowhere.

They are cursed.

and he says Chicago is quiet..meaning nothing cooking

boldy

That live blog thingy is pretty neat...for sure helping me kill some time here at work.

Scott Burnside also stated the Hawks don't "have to" unload forward assets at this time, they can unload them before the draft - making it sound like its not as impossible as many here think.

Posted by cubs n hawks on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 14:57
Yeah just put it up!

its is cool..I just asked him if he believed Scotty about the confidence in our goalies.

So much info out there huh?

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 15:01
have had it up for about an hour

couple questions regarding the hawks. Pierre said in regards to the Hawks moving any forwards that - "they're not forced to do anything but I think they should seriously look at a goalie.... rolling the dice on Niemi...."

Barnaby and Keenan (TSN)

Said he doesnt necessarily have confidence in the goaltending but our friend Mike Keenan said that although he agrees we have the offense to make up for it!!!

Cub/Hawk....I guess were about to find out who is right??

Willing to wait...

Last year the trade for Pahlsson wasn't announced till after the deadline. Considering the salary cap implications of any trade I would think it would take time to make sure everything is good to go...hopefully.

I know Florida just got him but would be nice to see Bitz here. That is a big guy that doesn't stop hitting.

Posted by 420Gap on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 13:53
then again...

Tallon was always a little iffy when it came to turning in his paperwork in time...

Other teams are making moves

Other teams are making moves and getting stronger and we seem to be standing pat and taking on former waiver wire players for "depth". I mentioned before that I feared our splash at the trade deadline would be more like a turd in the toilet and I'm thinking that may now be the case. I was holding out hope that maybe the Vokun dream would become reality but that seems less likely as the seconds tick down toward the deadline. I don't think this team can win a cup as currently constituted and I fear we're a second round exit as currently constituted. Last night simply proved that our goalies -- both of them -- are not ready to deliver a cup to Chicago and if management can't see that then I fear they are building the Chicago Cubs of hockey and that will make me sick! Hope I'm wrong and we'll all be pleasantly surprised either in the aquisitions or in the final result!! Hoping and praying... and lighting my cigarette as I wait for my food (for those of you old enough to remember smoking in restaurants and the amazing cosmic correlation between lighting your cigarette and your food ariving almost simultaneous to your first puff!)

It ain't over until after the deadline

I doubt the Hawks are done for the day.

From your mouth to Stan Bowman's ears!

Posted by orchardcreek on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 13:18
I'm with you

Not trying to start an anti-Cubs bashing...but you can't deny what is taking place.

I'll hold off my tirade post until the deadline passes. The clock is ticking on Stanley, and if this team stands pat, knowing full well that their main issues aren't addressed.......heads better role if this team doesn't reach its "one goal".

Wait 'Til Next Year

Isn't this the mantra McDoYa established while with the Cubs?

Posted by YellowPages1 on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 12:53
Wait till next year was

Wait till next year was around long before McDoya came on the scene. I do think the Hawks management legitimately wants to win the cup and are not selling hope like the Cubs do. Hawk fans are loyal to a point but if the organ-i-zation starts acting like the last regime and not really trying to win the fans will stop going to the games just like everyone did during the hockey dark ages we have recently come out of. The United Center is no "field of dreams" like Wrigley Field and will not draw fans. Winning hockey is what will draw fans not a hope and a prayer.

Posted by jhawk159 on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 14:02
Agreed

As I said, I have no problem with McDoYa selling hope. It's his job.

However, if he interferes with the 'product', in other words putting a winning team together, then we all have BIG problems.

BowWow's job = Win a Cup
McDoYa's job = Make $

Let's keep it this way.

Posted by YellowPages1 on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 14:25
McDoya

Ill bet he calls Stan up every 15 minutes looking for an update than calls Scotty right after and asks him the samething.

and he probably has tips for both of them as how to improve the hawks!!

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 14:34
That's what I fear... Just

That's what I fear... Just keep everyone interested and believing that it might happen one day and you keep the stadium full, the merchandise running off of the racks and the fan conventions well-attended. I don't know what the mentality is that produces teams like that because it doesn't seem to be frugality because the Hawks spend, as do the Cubs, but it just might be that they think they are smarter than the 29 other franchises in the league -- judging from some of the public comments this might be the case -- and aren't willing to be proven wrong in that regard in spite of the ultimate outcome. They are obviously very proud of themselves on West Madison and I'm not really sure why since this team hasn't won a cup in a half century and may not again this year. But listen to any interview with Stan or Jay Blunk or Rocky or McDonough and they can hardly keep themselves from breaking their arms patting themselves on the back -- with the obligatory "thank you" to the fans, of course! I'm one fan that is a bit tired of the Heritage Nights and all of the other non-hockey BS that they keep shoving down our throats!! Just win, BABY!

Posted by orchardcreek on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 13:02
What are they selling?

Charles Revson, founder of Revlon cosmetics is quoted as saying:

"In the factory we make cosmetics; in the store we sell hope."

Is McDoYa trying to deliver a better product / results or is he merely selling hope? His history with the Cubs suggests the latter. Just saying.

In fairness. It IS McDoYa's job to sell hope. And, it is BowWow's job to make the product. The problem occurs when McDoYa interferes with the product.

Here it is ..read with caution!!!

Chicago Blackhawks senior advisor of hockey operations Scotty Bowman said Wednesday there is no chance Florida Panthers goaltender Tomas Vokoun will end up in Chicago before Wednesday's 2 p.m. CT trade deadline.

ESPNChicago.com Blackhawks blog

Blackhawks blog The latest news from Hawks beat reporter Jesse Rogers. Blog

"[The Hawks' front office] is laughing about it," Bowman said on Toronto's 590-AM. "They've got their goalies in place right now.

"You look at what their record is. They're not out to make a ... somebody's trying to push Vokoun into Chicago. That's impossible to happen. There's no chance that would happen."

Bowman's son Stan is Chicago's general manager, and Stan has said he consults his father on a regular basis.

Both Blackhawks goaltenders played Tuesday night in New York as Antti Niemi started and was pulled after yielding three goals. Cristobal Huet came in and also struggled in a 5-3 loss to the New York Islanders.

Vokoun has a no-trade clause, and according to ESPNChicago.com's Jesse Rogers he had not been asked to waive that clause as of Wednesday morning.

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 12:31
Ok

But what is the point of this? I get it....he could be protecting his son....

Jesse Rogers is the LAST Guy in town I read or care about. What has he broken since he took over for ESPN? Nothing. Thought they had HAD HAD to dump Sopel to sign the big 3. Claimed the minimum to sign the big 3 was at least 8 million year.....the guy is a fan, who is lucky enough to follow around the team. Good for him.

i know

It was from ESPN ..but I should have cut out the Blogger.

I dont know who he is (rogers)..the big point was the "laughing" part of it and how our goaltending is not a big deal to our front office!

Smoke? or....choke?

From Spectorshockey.net:

CBC'S Elliotte Friedman reports Blackhawks consultant Scotty Bowman said the club isn't shopping for a goaltender.

He is not the GM and he "says" he is only consulted. not butting into the team's GMs business.

You can believe what you want, but I know if I was the GM, I would be having conversations gauging interest on each and everyone of my players, WHETHER I WAS TRADING THEM NOW OR NOT.

The reason? Because I certainly want to know just which team wants who when I start the CAP reduction fire sale after the Cup Finals end.

So...talk away big and L'il Scotty (in the back a' my hotel, oh, yeah!)

Posted by TheREALWiz on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 10:24
sublty

I dont believe anything the Bowmans say so im taking all this were not shopping for a GOALTENDER with a huge grain of salt!!

Scotty is very stubborn and I believe he wont cave to outrageous demands/counter offers by teams but he also isnt stupid...annoying yes but he has always been less than honest..

im expecting a trade or Crawford being called up

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 11:39
Crawford

I saw Crawford play Sunday and HE IS NOT ready for the NHL, let alone a Stanley Cup contending team. It's the quarterback syndrome - everyone wants the next guy down on the depth chart when the current starters aren't getting the job done. Well he's not the answer!

Posted by scooter1979 on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 12:30
I didnt realize you were a scout!!!

So you watched ONE game and made this assumption!!

Dont kid yourself ..he will be up here before the season ends.

I didn't know Corey Crawford

I didn't know Corey Crawford took to the DH hockey blogs to make a case for himself!!!

Posted by scooter1979 on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 14:33
you didnt?

I was just wondering how one game makes a difference in determining his readiness?

Posted by boldirev on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 14:35
It's simple...

If he was ready he would be with the team and not traveling by bus around the midwest. I am speaking more about the need for fans to call for the "next guy". When a quarterback, netminder, etc. is not up to par fans are always wanting the next guy down the chain regardless of their ability.

Last year in the playoffs against Detroit when the Bulin-wall went down and they called up Crawford to back up Huet there was a shot of Crawford sitting on the bench pre-game. He looked like he was about to lose his lunch. His expression was priceless. Is that what this team needs down the stretch? I don't think so.

Posted by scooter1979 on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 14:59
KFAN

In Toronto is where Bowman stated that. I heard the replay on the score.

I don;t know....how do you feel about our goaltending if they stand pat?

For me, the only way that works, is if they mandate that the d-men stop rushing the puck and taking ridiculous chances. Which completely goes against their style of play right now.

We dont' need a guy to make 40+ saves a night, and to stand on his head to win....What we do need, is a guy to stop letting in soft goals when scoring is such a premium in the playoffs.

Tick....tock

Posted by Steve Rain on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 10:37
The New Bob Pulford?

So, I thought Scottie Bowman was brought in to be a mentor to John McDonough and occasionally offer his input, IF ASKED, regarding player personnel, etc.

Yet, here he is yesterday on CBC (thank you Boldirev), and today on KFAN speaking out like HE IS running things.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. If you can't figure out that there was a back-door deal when Bowman came on board to get junior the GM job....then, I feel sorry for you.

If this team stands pat, the Bowmans get a D- in my book. They swapped D men, and didn't address their 2 most glaring needs: Physical defenseman and a g-damn goaltender.

I try to be as positive as I can, but you can't tell me that this team has what it takes in net to win the silver chalise in June.

I'm not a Huet basher, but at the same time, I'm not going to sit here and continue to be a Hawks apologist....

Anyone else notice the alarming biased announcing by Foley? He absolutely rips Johnsson for his turnover on goal 2, yet when Seabrook throws a cross zone pass that leads to a goal, or Keith gets knocked off the puck (exactly like Kim Johnsson) there is no tirade? Come on Pat, you are BETTER then that...........

Posted by Steve Rain on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 09:55
Foley: Came in as a homer,

as a guy so many teams want hyping their product.
He then realized when the product became SO MUCH of a lie, he had to say something.

I just expected him to return "in sync" with the selling of product, and one defenseman is staying and the other is going, so that's what the new sheep get.

He is still better than 80% of the guys calling games...but we agree Rainer!

Posted by TheREALWiz on Wed, 03/03/2010 - 10:28
Scotty Bowman

Bowman, Scotty not Stan was quoted on KFAN in Toronto saying the Vokoun deal is just rumor and not going to happen. Quote "THEY HAVE THERE GOALIES IN PLACE" Not good, lets hope it's a smoke screen.

What concerned me last night

What concerned me last night was Q putting Huet in the game. If he is on the verge of being traded why put him in the game to a. possibly get hurt and kill the deal and b. stink up the place and possibly kill a deal. It made me wonder if a deal was as close as we think and if the Panther organization was watching the asking price for Vokoun just went up.
