LOST: Dissecting "Sundown" (6x06)

This week's Sayid-centric episode was as straight-forward as "Lost" can possibly be, and the result was perhaps the most satisfying, intriguing hour of the final season, one in which control of the island clearly passed from Jacob's disciples to the Smoke Monster.

That last scene was great, wasn't it? Smokey's assault on the temple was intense, Sayid's choices were tragic, and Claire's ghostly rendition of "Catch a Falling Star" was as creepy as anything the show has ever shown us. Even Benjamin Linus ran in fear, hiding from Smokey and Sayid as they purged the temple, just as Ben helped purge the island of the DHARMA Initiative all those years ago.

By the end of "Sundown," Smokey has recruited Sawyer, Claire, Sayid, and Cindy, with the strong possibility of Kate and Jin also joining the cause. Dogen and Lennon, the temple's keepers, are dead, leaving Ilana, Lapidus, Sun, Miles and Ben to find and ally themselves with Hugo and Jack -- and Jack's not going to blindly accept the fact that his sister and his former fiancee are now simpatico with the ghost of John Locke. Things are looking pretty grim on the island.

And they're not much better off the island, where ALT-Sayid continues to live up to his horrific past. Sure, it was satisfying to see Martin Keamy die -- again, this time begging for his life -- but it is disheartening to see that Sayid still can't shake his past, even amid what should be a happy life amid family. (Well, minus the whole "Nadia being married to his brother" thing, of course.)

ALT-Jin's appearance in ALT-Sayid's life was one of the bigger surprises this week, especially since we last saw him being taken away by customs agents at LAX. Hopefully the upcoming Sun and Jin episode will fill in the gaps and take us further.

But Smokey once again stole the show, offering Sayid a chance to see his beloved Nadia again and casting further doubt on Team Jacob's intentions. Smokey sure seems to be a smooth-talking seducer, and surely we must credit Terry O'Quinn for making that work. Smokey appears to be direct and forthcoming, whereas Jacob makes Hugo and Jack jump through hoops, promising nothing in return. If Damon and Carlton's intention was to have the audience flip-flop from Team Jacob to Team Smokey and back again every other episode, they've succeeded -- and I am now more sure than ever that neither Jacob nor Smokey care about our heroes' best interests. (Just listen to Dogen's story.)

Maybe Jacob wanted Jack to break the mirrors in the lighthouse. Maybe Jacob doesn't want whomever is coming to the island to reach it, because maybe that person(s) will expose this conflict for what it really is.

As always, I can't wait to see what's next.

Best scene: Smokey's invasion of the temple, and the creepy aftermath.

Best performance: Andrea Gabriel, whose Nadia hasn't had this much screentime since her first episode, Season 1's "Solitary."

Best line: Miles, talking to Kate in the temple: "Right, Claire. She just strolled in here a couple hours ago, acting all weird. Still hot, though ..."

puzzled.

I'm trying to figure this out, now that the last episode's title has been revealed.

According to IMDb (which I realize is not always the most accurate source), there is at least one more episode (with a title) between Across the Sea and the series finale. (see here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411008/episodes#season-6)

Is that potentially the season recap? Did someone count wrong? They also have something airing on May 18, I would think THAT would be the recap, so did you miss an episode?

Like I said, just a little puzzled. :)

RE: puzzled.

The episode between "Across the Sea" and the finale has a title that qualifies as a major spoiler, so I think a lot of sites are shying away from printing it. I know what that title is, and consequently know way too much about something that's going to happen in a few weeks.

okay...

Makes sense, just couldn't figure out why you hadn't even referred to it...

I think it is sorta spoilery, but it doesn't tell me THAT much... it's like saying "The Incident" was a spoilery title. Didn't we know all along that we would see the Incident?

To me, knowing the title doesn't spoil anything, it just makes me anticipate it more. But I certainly respect those who don't want to be spoiled at all -- which is why I didn't actually type out that title!

jin

All that money stashed in Jin's luggage must have belonged to Keamy.

RE: jin

Woah, I forgot about the money! (Duh, that's why he was questioned by customs.)

Another nugget about last night: A commenter at DARKUFO pointed out that last night's episode was a lot like the "Order 66" sequence in "Star Wars: Episode III," where Palpatine orders the clones to turn on the Jedi, culminating in Anakin killing everyone at the Jedi Temple. Considering the number of "Star Wars" references throughout the show, and knowing Damon and J.J.'s fandom, this cannot be a coincidence...

Re: jin

I like this take on it. I noticed Smokey's promise to Dogen and Sayid mirrored Palpatine's promise to Anakin. So the Dark Side takes over the revered Jedi Temple, and the good guys go into hiding, only to regroup and hatch a plan at the lighthouse. The battle starts and it looks bad for the good guys, but Sawyer aka Han Solo, thought to be staying neutral, then swoops in at the last second to help the good guys and is the tipping point to tip the scale back in favor of Good?

Either way it'll be fun to see just what Darlton have in mind for the big showdown. How do you kill a smoke monster anyway?

"A guy can become a hurricane like smoke monster, and throw around people, and cause destruction? That's what this show has come to? We have stomached polar bears, time flashes, but this crap takes the cake."

The smoke monster has been around since the first episode when it killed the pilot of the plane.

Stupid

This show was great but no is wrapped up in trying to be so smart, so creative, that it's just plain stupid.

The smoke monster scene rivals the Germans taking the lid off the arc in "Raiders of the lost arc" in terms of stupidity. A guy can become a hurricane like smoke monster, and throw around people, and cause destruction? That's what this show has come to? We have stomached polar bears, time flashes, but this crap takes the cake.

Please....10 more episodes until this show gets put out of its misery

RE: Stupid

The Smoke Monster has always seemed a bit silly, but it has become one of those things that I just accept as fact: On this island, there is a monster made of smoke. There is also a wheel in a frozen cave that moves the island through space and time. And a giant green bird that screams "HURLEY!"

I thought last night's Smokepocalypse was creepy and effective. Smokey has given us some of the show's most memorable moments; don't forget that the smoke also pummeled Mr. Eko back in Season 3, and killed Keamy's mercenaries in Season 4.

I do agree with one thing: I'm glad there are only 10 episodes left. I can't wait to see how it ends.

Desmond

Any idea when Desmond is returning?

RE: Desmond

I do know that there is a Desmond-centric episode coming toward the end of the season. Whether he shows up before then, I do not know.

Henry Ian Cusick struck some weird deal where he gets listed in the opening credits even though he's barely working on the show this year; he's not mentioned in the ABC press releases as a show regular, and he wasn't featured in the cast promo shots that went out to media outlets about a month before the premiere. I suspect his character's absence has something to do with that sexual harrassment lawsuit ...
