Blanco out 10 days to 2 weeks (UPDATED)
Word out of Arizona today is that backup infielder Andres Blanco will be out 10 days to two weeks because of a moderate sprain of his right knee. He suffered the injury yesterday. As you read on Scot Gregor's Sox blog today, the Cubs-Sox game today at Glendale was rained out:

We'll see if the Cubs and Dodgers can go at it in Mesa. (UPDATE: That won't happen, either, as that game was rained out, too.) Cubs manager Lou Piniella was quick to dismiss any notion that a lengthy injury to Blanco would have meant Starlin Castro would be in the picture to open the season on the 25-man roster as a backup. The Cubs want Castro to play, so they'll start him at Class AAA Iowa, where he can play every day. I'd imagine we'll see him at Wrigley sometime this season. The Cubs also don't want to start the arbitration and free-agency clocks too soon with Castro, anyway:

The Cubs already have a backup candidate in infielder Darwin Barney, who had a line of .317/.368/.401 last year at Tennessee (AA) before going .264/.304/.330 in 63 games at Iowa. The 24-year-old Barney is a 5-foot-10 scrapper in the mold of Ryan Theriot. He was a fourth-round draft pick of Tim Wilken out of Oregon State in 2007.
UPDATE: Carrie Muskat at cubs.com reports that outfielder Xavier Nady is probably three days from getting into a game as he continues his rehab from Tommy John surgery:

Nady has been working with pitching coach Larry Rothschild on getting better throwing mechanics so as to protect the elbow when he does get back into games.
Angel Guzman told reporters in Arizona today that he's mulling shoulder surgery. The tough-luck Guzman has a ligament tear in his right shoulder. The injury is a serious one that's potentially career-ending. Guzman is only 28, but he's been with the Cubs since they signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Venezuela in 1999.
GM Jim Hendry is going to have to make a trade sooner of later. If you're keeping an eye on relievers in Cubs camp, you've got Esmailin Caridad, whom Lou says has made the team. From the system, Lou has already mused about Andrew Cashner breaking with the team in a bullpen role. Blake Parker had 22 saves and a WHIP of 1.24 at Iowa last year. James Russell pitched out of the pen last season, but he's a lefty. Mitch Atkins, the minor-pitcher of the year for the Cubs a couple years ago, had a tough go in Iowa last season. Jeff Gray is still ailing with a groin injury.
Justin Berg is a sinkerball pitcher who was 6-2 with a 2.43 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP at Iowa last year. Berg got into 11 games with the Cubs last year, going 0-0 with an 0.75 ERA with 1 walk in 12 innings. He figures to get a long look this spring.
The Cubs have Rule 5 pick Mike Parisi in camp as well as Marcos Mateo, who began last year with Daytona (A) before seeing bullpen and starting duty at Tennessee.

Cubs should sign Smoltz. They should give him the opportunity to start. If they don't want to keep him in the rotation when Lilly comes back, they should agree to trade/release him and let him try to find another team.
Bruce, do the Cubs have anything in which the Padres might be interested in exchange for Heath Bell? What would it take? Would a package consisting of Marshall, Fontenot and a prospect get talks moving in the right direction?
I'm always hesitant to get into hypothetical trade proposals because they're just that: hypothetical. I can't see the Cubs laying out the money for Bell, and I see the Padres wanting more than what the Cubs want to give up anyway. Bell is a closer, and you've already promised Marmol that role.
Bruce--
Checking in...So with Guzman going down, what does the bullpen look like? I assume the Cubs are still looking for a late inning set up man? Do they have that option in-house?
Lou has said that Caridad would have to pitch himself off the roster. Right now, they're very thin from a veteran standpoint. I could see Marshall going to the pen out of necessity. Right now, you've got Marmol and Grabow in the late innings. Guzman was going to be your right-handed guy. Now, after Caridad, you're looking at Justin Berg, Blake Parker, Thomas Diamond, Jeff Stevens and others.
You might also have to think about Samardzija out there, simply because he has some experience as a reliever. I know they'd like him to start, and Larry has raved about his improved mechanics, but barring a trade, you may have no other choice.
I do se Hendry stepping up his efforts to land a setup guy.
First off, the Cubs think his left handed bat has value. Second, no other team is going to think he is of any use at all.
The Padres would probably like someone who plays 2nd base, but a prospect, not a guy like Fontenot, or a shortstop, or maybe an OF prospect. Marshall, Lamahieu or Flahery, and a low level pitching prospect would probably get it done.
Thinking of Smoltz for bullpen, if he'd accept and not ask too much, or try Juan Cruz again
in a trade. I don't know who is out there. I love K.Wood, but worry about his arm. Pitching starting and relief is a big worry for the Cubs and me. Lots of good young pitchers with little or no experience. Cubs need a ton of surprises in pitching.hope they get it.
There are several options that the Cubs have to get a bullpen guy. First would be to deal from depth. The place where we have the best depth on the MLB team is LH pitching. Certainly lefty starter reliever swingmen who are solid/decent have alot of value. I would think that potentially if Gaub does well in spring training, it might free up the Cubs to trade Marshall for a RH setup man. If you were to offer Marshall, and say 3- 5 million to Cleveland for K Wood, that might be enough for a deal. If not, look somewhere else, to a team who could use help at the back end of the rotation. Marshall could be a very good option in a big ballpark.
I would hate to see the Cubs trade any type of usable prospects for a middle relief pitcher. I think I would rather take my chances for a while with the young guys and see what shakes out.
I know this is the musing of a pathetic fan boy - and I know he's not that great an option - but what about Kerry Wood? Yes- he's making a ton of money - but what are the chances the Indians can pick up some of the salary owed? I'm just dreaming arn't I?

Any word on how this will affect the Cubs spring rotation? Will Gorzo and Samardzija pitch in tomorrow's game against the A's?
It looks like Samardzija, Gorzelanny, and Marshall will follow Dempster tomorrow (according to Cubs.com). Too bad tomorrow's game is not on TV or radio!
But I agree the Cubs will still try to make a deal for a reliever.
And it would be nice to see Darwin Barney get some innings at short this Spring. He has an amazing glove, by all accounts.
