Wiz gets 8 games; same refs tonight?

LOS ANGELES - The NHL has suspended Anaheim's James Wisniewski for eight games for his brutal hit on Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook.

Wisniewski, a repeat offender who received a two-game suspension in November for a hit on Phoenix's Shane Doan, left his feet to hit Seabrook in the head, knocking the Hawks star out on his feet.

Is the suspension enough, too much, or just right?

Unfortunately, the league said nothing about disciplining referees Paul Devorski and Ian Walsh for their gross mistake of giving Wisniewski only a two-minute minor penalty for charging Seabrook.

Maybe this will keep Devorski and Walsh from working the playoffs. We can only hope.

Devorski and Walsh also failed to penalize Corey Perry late in Wednesday's game for that shove to Brent Sopel's back that helped lead to the Ducks' winning goal.

Get this: Devorski and Walsh were scheduled to work Thursday's Hawks-Kings game as of mid-afternoon. There was talk, however, that the NHL might bring in two others.

Take it for what it is worth....

Seabrook nailed Perry, Wiz nailed Seabrook. (Wiz screwed up by leaving his feet and throwing an elbow.) Seabrook wil miss a couple of games. (Given his play recently, that could be a good thing.)

Colin Campbell screwed up by not suspending Matt Cooke. Now he has got a mess on his hands, which he is backpeddling trying to fix, by giving Wiz 8 games.

For What It's Worth: Wiz not only hammered Seabrook (illegally) to defend Perry, he dusted Keith in the follow up fight, played a strong game for Anaheim, and then got an assist on the empty netter, before fighting and handling Nick Boynton at the end of the game.

Boy, trading Wiz for Pahlsson and keeping Cam Barker last year really paid dividends for the Hawks didn't it?
I would take Wiz back on the Hawk team in a heartbeat...............you just saw why.
He sticks up for his teammates and can swing 'em, while playing solid minutes. I bet those alleged glass knees just cause him to wallflower every night, huh?

Someone wrote on this blog that the new Hawk Mgmt is 'Meet the new boss, same as the old boss'. What did the old boss get for Curt Fraser when they traded him? Steaks to put on the black eyes of the Hawk players he would pound on?

It ain't the team on the ice guys.
It is the one in the press box you need to keep your eye on.

The visor comment by Wiz

is just 5 year old who me BS....his visor cut his nose because he hit his own gloves and stick which had just smashed into Seabs face.

Just heard Edzo make a great suggestion: not only should the player be suspended but the team can't replace that player and must go with 17 and 2 goalies during the suspension.

I like that idea; it not only impact the player but the team.

Murray just has to take rhetorical jab "Q". But hey look a the plus side the offending exec actually admitted that Wiz was out of bounds. That's progress.

Carlyle still in the same delusional state of denial that his "star" player of the nite is. The guy has been with Ducks for almost a full season and that his best game!!! OK you say so.

Bob Murray

is 100% right.

They're looked at as whiners now.

Bob Murray's Statement

Here is what he had to say.....

"I played in Chicago a long time," Murray said. "I live in the city of Chicago. It used to be a black-and-blue town. It didn't have whiners. I strongly suggest Joel worries about his goaltending and stops trying to run the National Hockey League. ... He should worry about coaching

Gee, I forgot about all the Cups he brought to Chicago as a player and GM. What does he know about black and blue anyway. He was a soft player as I remember and had the luxury of playing on a team that had enough tough guys to protect him.

Anaheim reaction

"Ducks Executive Vice President and General Manager Bob Murray spoke to reporters via conference call after the suspension was announced. Following is a transcript:

First of all, we love the way Wiz plays and we want him to play the game hard. That is how he has to play and he is very effective doing that. In this instance, he crossed the line. He went too far and he was going to get suspended. I applaud the league cracking down on these things. He should get suspended. I hope they continue to work on this. What happened at the last GM Meetings and the direction we’re going is wonderful."

Murray wasn't happy with the length, mostly because of inconsistency league-wide. Wisniewski, for the record, maintains his innocence and the visor-contact b.s. Coach Carlyle gave a typical, non-committal, basically supporting his guy, non-response.

Anaheim broadcast

One of the Anaheim broadcasters was saying that Seabrook was trying to sell the hit to the referees. Unbelievable.

How much do you want to bet...

...the Hawks have several more power plays tonight compared to the Kings, even with different refs?

Eight is not enough

Where is Roger Goodell when you need him?

This league only has itself to blame for all of these cheapshots. Eight games is a joke for intent to injure. If Wiz says he wasn't trying to injure Seabrook for Seabrook's legal hit a few moments earlier than he's a total lying piece of trash. But at least the league did SOMETHING here, unlike some of the other intent to injure plays that have occurred around the NHL this season. If the league wants to eliminate the nonsense they'll have to start issuing 30-40 games suspensions. Players can't police themselves like they used to due to rule changes, face shields, etc. But the risk of losing a half a season's pay ought to help get guys back in line. And I would make playoff games part of any suspension. Why should someone get a 20 game suspension with 5-6 games left in the season and then get to help his team in the playoffs?

And the recent officiating......I'm too f'ing tired to talk about that right now.

Salary cap limitations?

Since we had to call up Boynton to replace Campbell and Crawford, do we have the cap space to call up someone to replace Seabrook? I thought they said Johnsson won't be ready till Saturday at the earliest. If we can't call up someone, kind of leaves Byf as our only option on D.

Hawks should concentrate on what they control

Which means benching Eager. He was on the ice; did nothing.

Posted by Stooven on Thu, 03/18/2010 - 18:37
Agreed.

Eager will not be with team next year.

Comparing Seabrook's Injury

Comparing the concussion to Keith's last year, you noticed Keith wasn't as solid after return. He was cleared to return, then he became overly concerned about trying to do too much to help others all for the sake of the team defense. Now I don't go to a lot of home games, but I see most games one way or another. We don't know the extent of concussion but I'd expect Seabrook was playing worse after returning from a concussion earlier this same season. It would be expecting too much for him to return in as good shape and capable even for the playoffs. Notice Keith was him old self this fall. His miscues this yea are more often trying to force things and gambling offensively.

As for Seabrook replacement: Due to experience and skating ability, I'd expect Petiot to be recalled at some point. If Chicago had recalled Chellios, he would have nailed someone as a response? Or be sitting in penalty box already because he is too slow? He appears to be rotating out with Popovic so far in Atl. Good enough shape to play in NHL?

It is hard to imagine Bowman won't strongly consider someone for next year's team who is likely to have the character to at lest go rub his glove in Wizniewski face...if that sort of situation arises. I'd like to see a poll somewhere: how many, knowing team already in playoffs, wanted to go nail a Duck's player with a devastating check? Were players under orders from Q to try to win and not retaliate? Other: Maybe Eager is one good licking from retirement?

Nowhere Near Enough

That was nothing but an vicious attempt to seriously injury Seabrook, and Wiz should be gone for at least 20 games.

The refs should be suspended for at least 5, and never see the playoffs.

The NHL and its on and off-ice officiating are the biggest joke in sports.

Once they manage to get someone paralyzed or killed, maybe the courts will do what the Idiot Twins Campbell and Bettman won't.

Devorski on tonights game???

Might as well get the stretcher ready for Dustin Brown on Hjalmarsson then.

I'm happy to see the NHL saw what the refs didn't but still...alot of anger on this one.

Devorski and Walsh ...

SUUUUUUUCK! I would love to see disciplinary action for refs for poorly officiated games. Ref a bad game, get suspended w/o pay for a game, then see what these idiots do. Two refs per game has also watered down the ref talent pool. Or put their names back on their jerseys so we can know which idiot did what and, at least, we can taunt them and tell them what we think of their mothers.

Penalty on winning goal

I think Wiz on here looked up the rule and there is nothing that should have been called on the game winning goal? I honestly don't know if there is anything in the rule book about that. Sure it makes sense that Sopel is trying to play the puck and is interfered with but by the rule of the book there might not be anything against what was done. Pat and Eddie have said numerous times on the air how they are able to talk to the director of officiating about rule clarifications. Can we get an official clarification on this one? That would be better then a bunch of us biased fans speculating on it.

More NHL Insanity

>Same refs? Only in the NHL -- a rudderless league in desperate need of a leader who loves the game, but is tough enough to take control and put the "old boy dinosaurs" in their place -- once and for all

How's Seabs? Any word?

I bet the hawks say nothing more for a few days other than the insulting
"Upper Body"

Seabs

I'll be suprised if we see him in the next two weeks. Maybe on the 28th vs Columbus? Hopefully not much longer than that.

To turn this into a positive...let's hope he's back at full strength soon. He needed the rest as he was wearing down making poor decisions at times. But I certainly didn't want him getting rest this way! Here's hoping he's fresh for the playoff push.

Nice Post Tim

It's about time someone called out the officiating. This may be one of the worst officiated incidents I can think of.

They obviously saw what happened and there is absolutely no doubt about the intent. Even if they didn't see all of it the two linesman surely had.

So, WTF? Is there more to this story?

Lay heavy on LA

With these refs it's like having the mafia's odds man calling you direct!

Posted by johnnychi on Thu, 03/18/2010 - 17:15
Devorski and Walsh should

Devorski and Walsh should have gotten season suspensions for the travisty they oversaw last night. The best referees are the ones you don't notice. Beavis and Butthead (for you grobber....not Bettman/Campbell) had a direct impact on the outcome of the game. You watch the Kings have something like a 7-2 powerplay advantage tonight. Look for a disallowed goal or two. Watch those morons wave off the clinching open net goal tonight for the Hawks....they'll call "goaltender interference". Maybe buff & Company can hit the refs with their purses as they skate by.

Tim, as for the blown crosscheck/interference play on Sopel that led to the goal. I guess those two refs got a +1 each on the play!
