Sox' make confusing move
I’m confused.
The White Sox send Lance Broadway back to Class AAA Charlotte on Thursday after he survives a shaky start and pitches 5 1/3 decent innings and beats the Royals.
The Sox are expected to call up Clayton Richard before Friday night’s game at Oakland, presumably for bullpen help.
Richard, however, is a starting pitcher, and the White Sox are going to need one of those for Tuesday’s home game against Seattle.
If Richard is pressed into bullpen duty against the A’s this weekend, he won’t be able to start. And under MLB rules, Broadway can’t come back up for 10 days unless there’s an injury.
There’s got to be something else going on here.
After Thursday’s game, Ozzie said he wanted to be “careful” with Bobby Jenks, Octavio Dotel and Matt Thornton, who threw a total of 55 pitches in back-to-back appearances against Boston Monday and Tuesday.
Thornton said he feels good, but injured reliever Scott Linebrink said his shoulder problems started after he threw 43 total pitches in back-to-back outings against Oakland in early July.
Maybe my source is wrong, and Richard is not coming up from Charlotte. Maybe Boone Logan or Ehren Wasserman get another look.
Or maybe the White Sox just drop Richard in the bullpen and worry about Tuesday’s starter when they get back from Oakland.
