Week 2 preview
Here's a look at some of the area's intriguing Week 2 football matchups...
MAINE SOUTH AT WHEATON WARRENVILLE SOUTH, 4 p.m. Friday - The ESPNU broadcast lost some luster when two-time defending 8A champ Maine South had its 28-game winning streak snapped by Schaumburg. But the Hawks still figure to be formidable and WW South is looking to repeat as 7A champs behind Illinois-bound QB Reilly O'Toole and Kansas-bound lineman Luke Luhrsen. Will Maine South keep alternating QBs Jimmy Frankos and Matt Alviti?
LAKE ZURICH AT CARY-GROVE, 7:15 p.m. Friday - A whole lotta triple option between two programs that run the offense as well as anyone. Lake Zurich and RB Jacob Brinlee just missed a trip to Champaign last year and scored 20 points in the final seven minutes to beat Fremd 20-10. Cary-Grove lost all but three starters from its unbeaten 6A champ and lost 27-6 to Crystal Lake Central.
BARRINGTON AT ELK GROVE, 7:30 p.m. Friday - Barrington's size on the O-line with Pat Bolger and Dan Voltz leading the way for workhorse Chase Murdock against Elk Grove's speed with do-it-all Nick Meyer, Eddie Stahl and Joey Bishoff in the Mid-Suburban crossover. Barrington hopes it started to rebound from an off 3-6 year with a 41-28 win over Libertyville. Elk Grove looks for its first 2-0 start since it went 11-1 in 2004.
FREMD AT PROSPECT, 7:30 p.m. Friday - One of the state's premier programs is going to come out 0-2 - that hasn't happened for either since the 1990s. Fremd moved the ball at Lake Zurich with QB Rich Concialdi and RB Justin Wallace and led 10-0 midway through the fourth. Prospect moved the ball and was tied at halftime but York had too many big plays and pulled away 34-21 as Knights' star Peter Bonahoom was hampered by cramps.
GLENBARD WEST AT DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH, 7:30 p.m. Friday - It doesn't get any easier for Downers South as it comes off a 28-21 loss to state-ranked Bolingbrook. Glenbard West rolled past Glenbard South in its drive to return to Champaign and win it this year behind Iowa-bound O-lineman Jordan Walsh.
BARTLETT AT CRYSTAL LAKE SOUTH, 7:30 p.m. Friday - Bartlett wasn't happy with a rare 3-6 finish last year and wasn't entirely thrilled with a 25-3 opening win over Hoffman Estates. But Bartlett showed it has plenty of weapons in Aaron Thabuteau, Andy Puccini and QB A.J. Bilyeu behind a big line. The Hawks will need them against powerful CL South and QB Drew Ormseth and Vanderbilt-bound O-lineman Jake Bernstein.
METAMORA AT SOUTH ELGIN, 4 p.m. Saturday - Central Illinois powerhouse Metamora, which has won two state titles the last three years under Pat Ryan, brings its vaunted speed and running game up north in what will be one of the biggest challenges for the emerging South Elgin program. QB Michael Fay and Bryan Love lead the way for Metamora, which rallied to beat Bloomington Central Catholic 48-24. South Elgin ran for a school-record 325 yards in a 52-13 romp over St. Charles North behind Adolfo Pacheco and Brad Birchfield - QB John Menken can throw, too.
