For most part, Sox great in Game 1
For the most part, it was a great Game 1 for the White Sox against the Red Sox.
Yes, the Sox twice were burned by Boston on the old fake to third base and then fake to first base play.
In the third inning, Alex Rios was caught leaning off first and Omar Vizquel was nailed at home trying to score from third during the rundown.
And in the ninth, Alexei Ramirez leaned off first base with A.J. Pierzynski at third, and Ramirez was tagged out in a rundown.
But that was about it for the negative department in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader.
Well, one more thing. Manny Ramirez is still playing with long dreadlocks. But as Ozzie said again Saturday, that’s chairman Jerry Reinsdorf’s problem.
The White Sox are well known for their: “When we have something to announce, we’ll announce it” policy.
Reinsdorf has a long-standing policy prohibiting long hair, and Ramirez’s dreads were still shoulder length during Game 1, despite reports he had them cut.
The chairman hasn’t commented on the issue since Ramirez was acquired on waivers from the Dodgers Monday, and Ozzie has been left holding the bag and answering daily questions while trying to keep the Sox focused on catching the Twins.
As for Manny, he twice has basically rolled his eyes when asked about his hair. So be it.
As for the actual Game 1, the White Sox needed a big effort from starter John Danks and they got it. While he labored at times, Danks allowed only 1 runs in 7 innings as the White Sox beat the fading Red Sox 3-1.
The White Sox needed Gordon Beckham back in the lineup and they got that, too.
After missing two games with a sore right hand, Beckham returned and delivered a big RBI double in the seventh inning.
The White Sox needed to get their bullpen straightened out and they did that as well.
Matt Thornton was available, but the Sox didn’t need the left-hander.
Looking refreshed after a rough couple weeks, Sergio Santos pitched a perfect eighth inning, and Bobby Jenks pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth, throwing 95-98 mph fastballs while recording his 26th save.
Oh yeah, Manny was 2-for-4.
