Updated: Heart pulls plug on GOP anthem
UPDATE: So much for the GOP convention anthem
CNN.com has this update:
Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart said Thursday night that Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG have sent a cease and desist notice to the McCain-Palin campaign over their use of 'Barracuda.'
"We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We
hope our wishes will be honored," the group said in a statement that said they "condemn" the use of the song at the Republican convention.
Shout out to Scott Troehler for the tip.

And if the real thing don't do the trick
You better make up something quick
Wow! Didn't see that coming. Heart's "Barracuda" as a balloon drop theme song!? Certainly kicks the crap out of that pop country song Obama played in Denver.
Do me and McCain a favor, before you click on the video, crank it up.
(apologies for any ancillary graphic info, I was going for loudest version available!)
Update 2: McCain vs. the MiniVan
By all accounts the Honda minivan ad is still OK with Heart, and probably far more lucrative.

I like it!
Wondering what they'll switch to since the campaign is now apparently Heartless.
... let's say Obama had chosen Hillary and that ticket was using this selection of music for Hillary...I wonder if there would be such an outcry from Heart? Me thinks not.. As Laura Ingraham says, "shut up and sing".

According to Rolling Stone, John Mellencamp asked McCain's campaign earlier this year to stop playing "Our Country" and "Pink Houses" at campaign events.
Mellencamp (aka Cougar) has a history of nixing the GOP. In 1984, Ronald Reagan wanted to use "Pink Houses" and was told no.
The problem I saw with "Barracuda" is the only way most 20-something voters have heard of it is either via Guitar Hero or the minivan ad (and how many 20-somethings are shopping for Honda minivans?).
But for everyone else it rocks.
It definitely rocks! I'm 41, so I have heard it "a time or two". :-)
Not surprising about Mellencamp. I heard about the recent scolding he gave McCain, but didn't know (or don't remember) the 1984 scenario.
So what would be your backup pick for a theme song?
My personal fav -- Rage Against the Machine's "Freedom" -- probably would have been a bit over the top for the GOP crowd. And I'm guessing the Ragers wouldn't have been any happier than Heart.
"Life is a Highway". The Tom Cochrane version... The Rascal Flatts version blows. :-)
I'm not a big fan of the contemporary pop country scene. And I grew up with a cornfield in the backyard and a F-150 in the (gravel) driveway.
As for Cochrane, there's always his other "hit" -- Lunatic Fringe.
..when he was with Red Rider.
In an act of desperation, I googled "Republican rocker" and was stunned to learn that Johnny Ramone was an avowed Republican.
I could probably start a new blog post with pick the best Ramones song for the campaigns.
"Outsider" is a bit obscure for Ramones hits but would fit McCain's theme.
"Sheena is a punk rocker" might fit for Palin.
I'm guessing "I wanna be sedated" is how we'll all feel by November.
