Draft before free agency would suit Angelo

If the negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement drag on for a significant length of time, which unfortunately appears to be a foregone conclusion, the draft could happen before free agency. Free agency is supposed to begin at midnight on March 3, but it cannot start without a collective bargaining agreement in place. Regardless of the labor situation, the draft will be held the final week in April. A reversal in the order wouldn't bother Bears G.M. Jerry Angelo. "From my perspective, I would like the draft to come first because free agency is obviously more expensive to fill your needs," Angelo said. In the ideal world, according to me, I would like to fill our needs and do whatever we can in the draft. What we can't get accomplished in the draft then you go in to free agency. “It's the other way for reasons that serve the players. So we just play by the rules, and whenever the first pool of players are available to us, and normally it's been free agency, that's the pool that you aggressively go after to fill your needs. Hopefully it'll continue to be the same and then we go into the draft and do the clean-up work, so to speak.”
