Kubina suspended for hit on Bolland
WASHINGTON – At least the NHL corrected one wrong on Thursday when it suspended Tampa Bay defenseman Pavel Kubina three games for elbowing Blackhawks center Dave Bolland in the head on Wednesday.
Bolland had to leave the game after the first period head shot with a suspected concussion. Bolland did not accompany his teammates to Thursday’s visit to Walter Reed Hospital outside Washington.
The league came down on Kubina for his blatant blow to Bolland’s head even through referees Marc Joanette and Tim Peel let it go when it happened.
Joanette and Peel also allowed Martin St. Louis’ deciding shootout goal to stand even though replays showed the puck stopped moving forward, which is against the rules.
The Hawks didn’t practice on Thursday, spending the off-day visiting wounded soldiers at Walter Reed.
On Friday, the Hawks visit the White House in the afternoon to be honored by President Obama for winning the 2010 Stanley Cup.

I am one who does not desire to see a fight in hockey...but fighting is allowable within the rules for a reason, and that reason is to ensure that no one takes liberties with your top players or goalies...Kubina ran at Bolland with malice and purpose and now Bolland's immediate future is in doubt...we HAVE TO DEFEND against this crap...like in St. Louis when Toews was run at and had his legs taken out just before he crashed into the boards...
We, as a team, don't ask for this...we are not goons that are receiving these hits in forms of retaliation...we play with skill and with speed...teams take shots at our skilled players as their way of trying to slow us down, and it simply CANNOT BE TOLERATED!!!
The posters here are right...Bickell needed to do something before he stepped off the ice, especially when a penalty wasn't called...Scott has to follow up with retribution to send a message to all teams that this will not be tolerated...instead, Scott plays 3 minutes and gives up 4 turnovers...just a complete waste...
The other poster is right...without Dave Bolland, this team does NOT make a playoff run, and likely not event he playoffs...
And remember this...as big as the 8 game run was, we are right back in the turmoil as a result of Florida...and with the upcoming schedule, the Hawks could easily go 4 and 4 in the next 8 leaving them near the bottom of the playoff roster once again.
This thing is far from over, and we need ALL of our core players healthy and playing hard, and they can only do that if they are protected from the idiotic abuses from the opposition...
So, message to Scott, Brouwer, Bickell, Dowell and even Kopecky...stand up for your teammates at every turn, starting now, or our playoff run may never get off the ground.
The guy skates to the bench after his fellow Hawk takes a cheap shot. How many times have we seen this happen? Too many. Bickell, grow a pair.
6'4" 235 lb ballerina with 17-18 goals.
He should have run Kubina through the glass and then dropped the gloves and started swinging.
But............the Instigator rule played a role in his decision, I am sure.
He has to know his team's PK sucks and his team needs points.
Thank you Bettman and Gretzky. What's next? Uniforms with tutu's?
The tradition of the NHL game goes way way back, and says you are not supposed to hoist the Cup unless you have won it.
I am sure the team presented it to many of our fighting wounded at Walter Reed,
and those that could hoist it probably did. (Our brave fighting men and women deserve an exception to tradition.)
So what to do with this guy in the Oval Office?
with our man Steve Harper, that's what. Steve, when he can grab a few moments, is writing a book about hockey so if Obama wants to pick up a few tips on the great game it shouldn't be a problem.
Re-elect him.
I don't think Michelle will try and pick it up....
End of world politics on this site from me....NHL politics well okay
Shame on you. You are being political. A thousand deaths to you! (just kidding.)
I wonder if you will get hammered the way I do when I get political?
You know me....I don't care if you want to talk like this. Your views are respected.
This will be a classic study of the double standard argument.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...............................
Cheese......
It did not happen..............
Ole Wiz got a pass from the 'one side of the aisle' bloggers. (Wth the exception of one guy.)
They are all on to the next blog.
But didn't you kinda figure that would happen? It was predictable because you see it everyday in other arenas.
Wiz is cool, though.
Nobody on this site knows more about the Hawks and the game of hockey than him.
I enjoy his views; Hawks. Rockford. The game itself, and non-hockey matters.
You promised to be nice.
That was nice. Just a question.
Good one too when you consider Ozzie Guillen pratically ripped the Cup out of Coach Q's hands over the Summer last year and hoisted the thing.
Heck, I get my butt chewed by one side of the aisle everytime I go non-hockey on this board.
It only takes me 25 times before I wise up.
Hey, I got college!
Side note:
Did you hear that Montreal politicos are trying to bring formal charges against Zdeno Chara to have him arrrested for his hit on Max Pacioretty?
The world has lost its marbles.
I haven't seen the hit yet. Tried yesterday on TSN but they were having problems with their video links. Probably too much traffic. Can't make a call, but from the cries it sounded nasty. And the lack of fine or suspension reeks of the usual star treatment from Colon Dumbbell's office. I think based on their track record, any star player would probably get away with manslaughter..................if it was their first violation of course.
It was interference and Chara got a major interference penalty and a game misconduct for it, but it was not intent to injure.
Chara does not play that way. He has been around a long time and his record is clean with no history of this kind of stuff.
It was just wrong place wrong time for Pacioretty, being so near the partition.
Can't tell the loony politicos in Montreal that though, because everyone is entitled nowadays.
It's nuts.
I'm not sure where I stand on that Chara hit. I watched the previous two matches and Pachioretty and Montreal really got under Chara's skin when when the Habs rallied and defeated the Bruins. Then this game they frustrated them again and there's Max primed for the crush along the boards. Saying all this...I hate Montreal.
The one thing I think means nothing is 'clean records'. People snap. We all have breaking points. Even the most even keeled blow their temper if pushed hard enough.
Is Chara guilty? I don't know. I've went back and forth on this so many times. I just remember Chara was very livid on that Habs comeback and he was super p.o'd at Pachioretty and Gomez' lipping him off.
Don Cherry.
He said the league did the right thing in not suspending Chara.
but I think they need to look at the placement of the partitions and how they could make them safer. I know they have pads to make them softer, but I'm sure there are engineers out there that could design something that's better rounded or just tapered better to prevent this type of situtation.
I doubt the President will hoist the Cup. I'm sure he will take pictures with it though.
Should be fun to see, not sure if Obama follows Blackhawks hockey like he does for Bulls basketball?
he couldn't hoist it. 20 inch shoulders and did you ever see him throw a baseball? Like a girl!
to jump on you they way they jump on me when I say stuff like this.........................
...............................................
A lot of knobs on here throw darts at John McD...but his CLASS shines through time and time again with gestures like today's visit to Walter Reed and the nightly anthem tributes to the troops. Tazer was clearly moved by what he saw and he's Canadian as am I. I'm so proud to support a team with management that appreciates the brave men and women that FIGHT FOR FREEDOM.
I truly believe the Blackhawks organization is the BEST in Chicago. With all they do for the military and the way they treat its fanbase, it is nothing but first-class all the way. I'm so proud to be a fan of this GREAT organization. God bless Rocky, John, Jay, Coach Q and the boys.
We should also never forget the sacrifice and bravery of Canadian soldiers who are fighting and too often dying in Afghanistan. And their families who also give up so much.
They get zero media coverage here, which is a shame.
Great point Herd...i'm an imbecile for forgetting to mention the outstanding contribution Canada's military has made and continues to make in Afghanistan. Their service has been EXCELLENT. Thanks for pointing that out.
-------
I bought a green for $2 hundy...face value was $95 so paint the L on my forehead, but NO REGRETS...great time, great win and a ton of Tomahawk fans there...lot of head dress wearing maniacs...i loved it and thanks for asking bud !!!
but don't think any of the zebras is gonna disallow that winning goal.
They clearly stopped calling pims just prior to the overtime, with infractions that were pretty apparent going both ways.
Still scratching my head with you goon boyz.
I saw the Bolland hit fron down the ice and he clearly looked like he got his bell rung, but he kept playing. His face clearly showed difficuly after it intially happened. But the way he skated made me think he shook it off.
Not to demean John Scott's IQ, but I bet he and the coaches didn't figure it out until the medical staff stepped in.
A goal got scored and then another...not the time to retaliate...not even if we had the leagues best pk.
The entire game was close.
I hate doing the time warp with folks here. This isn't the league that the Braod Street Bullies played in...pims in close games kill you.
You mention time warp and I flashback to Tim Curie as Dr Frank-N-Furter, thanks for the visual. Make it stop!!!! Gonna take another 15 years to get that out of my cranium.
a jump to the left....
There it goes again..............
After that cheap shot Bolland continued playing and was involved in 2 scoring plays.
We're screwed if we play Vancouver in the playoffs without Bolland.
is that Q is more worried about killing a 2 minute instigator penalty by not sending scott out later in the game to answer the bell. some coaches would have& i'm sure scotty would have been more than happy to accept! what was even more troubling is that no one even skated up to kubina when they saw bolly struggling! wasn't bickell on the ice? seabrook? fricken bickell only started hitting after he got rung, not because of what happened to bolland! yadda, yadda, yadda, were beatin' a dead horse here! Q doesn't have a set & it filters down to this years group other than brouwer&scotty! here comes all the crap....... the game"s changed, speed , skill, puck possession, ect. ect. ect. .............. the flyers& bruins have all those components also. i bet, carcillo, shelley, pronger, lucic, thornton, chara ect. wouldn't let that happen to a teammate, and their coaches would gladly eat the 2 minute penalty! and it's a good bet 1 of those 2 teams will win the cup this year!
you are one step from a Bertuzzi moment. No one is sane enough to fight Scott. Scott jumps some one and pounds away. The intent is to injure. Such a fine line. And if the opposing player turtles or refuses to fight, and Scott still pounds away. Yea, great hockey. Until the guy has a concussion or broken jaw or even kills the guy. maybe Scott labels him with one punch. It will not matter, because some players will play the same way and will not pass up a hit if presented.
That is why i think most of the old school guys are hypocrites - it is ok to fight and retaliate until someone gets hurt. Everyone blasts Bertuzzi for his action, but it was an unfortunate accident.
The best response, finish your checks and target their stars. And when the ref is not looking - a little extra slashing and rough stuff is ok, but don't get caught.
And about the playoffs, there is limited fighting if any. And Carcillo and Shelly get limited ice time. Pronger, his good days are behind him. Flyers will not win this year, Bruins have a chance. But the team to win the cup will be from the west again.
the worse part about the Kubina hit - the Hawks did not benefit at all from the 3 game suspension. Kubina was trying to hit Bolland and missed. he should be still penalized. Ohlund nailed a few hawks many times. One time, JT got tatooed good. JT was a little groggy after the one hit. I did see Brouwer nail Ohlund once, but Ohlunds physicality was non-existent in the 3rd.
...with much of your post.
Wait until the play-offs start. Im comparison, games like Wednesday's will seem like a picnic to the Hawks. That;s really when we'll find out if they are "team tough", like many seem to think here.
I don't think they are, even a little. Hope I'm wrong.
If you cannot tell by now how tough both mentally and physically this group is, you see any significant difference in the playoff. I suggest you go to the TampaNHL site and listen to the coach post game with Guy, who had a plan in place to rough ride the hawks.
He says some pretty complimentary things about the Hawks.
There were upteen times when hawks missed open nets and chances to set up teammates.
They have the puck a lot more than their opponents so they are gonna be hit more, RIGHT?
I just don't buy into so many here continuing to go down this "Bertuzzi" road...it is if you are all repeating it and repeating so that when your new ten-player-turnover club has a play-off set-back, YOU ALL TOLD US SO!
Last time I am going here. Deadline is OVER. Drop it.
To get ONE of the type players (you all keep thinking are gonna fit in our preesnt Cap) he has to not just be big, he needs wheels, because that is what this "at-em" attack needs to be successful and adding a cheaper slower big man only complicates the way they are committed to play the game.
The hawks also throw some pretty hard hits at the lightning, and the wings we have seem to be solid strong wall players, just what is necessary to run the cycle. Do you REALLY think teams are looking to give away inexpensive paid bigger guys with quick sticks and jump?
( Trade deadline - past)
You try and be smart and grow your own.
Six foot three Teddy Purcell finally blossoms at 25 (26 before next training camp)
The Kings trade him to the Lightning after 2 seasons of limited duty in L.A., and send Tampa 3rd rounder too, for Jeff Halpren! (hey Lombardi has lots of prospects, he;'s generous.)
The Los Angeles Kings whose GREAT scouting staff has been able to find NHL and AHLers who have never been drafted,...they have that great young goalie Marty Jones in the A, and Dee-men Davis Drewiske, and Jake Muzzin, and they are all around 25 - 26 years of age.
That is far younger than the china doll hawks you are hell bent to replace.
Interesting though: Dean Lombardi, succumbing to pressure over pays to get Dustin Penner the exact type guy you are praying for - and Penner makes 4,250,000 and costs a first rounder and a really nice big tough defenseman prospect , Colten Teubert.
You think Penner puts Kings over the top?
I don't.
I am just saying that I venture to say all here never thought this team would win a consecutive Cup, because of Cap turnover, and past history.
People here did think they would make noise.
So, can see just what the acoustic barriers up were later, after the playoffs?
cannot wait to miss post after post of the "I told you so...."
>Hawks are one of the best board battling teams in the league
>Hawks are one of the best cycling teams in the league
>Hawks are back to one of the best puck possession teams in the league
>Everybody wants a tight-end on skates, with soft hands, that can fly, for a low salary -- who doesn't?
scott should have took that instigator penalty not at the end of the game ,it should have been taken right after the toews hit from ohlund or the kaner hit from ohlund ,not at the end of the game i still can't believe nobody on the team when after ohlund after the kane hit ,the good old days manson ,probert, secord, magnuson ,b wilson would have went after ohlund ,i can't believe that the hawks is so soft i am telling you right now i can't believe we have no major injuries on this team with all the hits we receive from other teams this year .bring beach up he won't back down from anybody he would have went after ohlund i heard he was a magnuson type of player he don't win to many fights but he is always there to protect is teamates i don't care if he is on the four't line at rockford for whatever reason we need somebody to protect our star players. nice gesture from players and staff to go to that hospital yesterday i hope you guys enjoy the white house today you deserve it guys.
Obviously, having the goon in the game wasn't a deterrent at all.
Nor would Scott fighting their goon in the made-for-the-cage-fighting-contingent staged brawl.
boston and phildelphia they have 2 or3or4 goons they have pretty good teams, hawks has 1 he only plays once every 10 games ,i will tell you's right now hawks needs toughnest,i don't no who's coaching rockford but i think they ruining kyle beach down there, imagine playing on the fourth line because he took a couple stupid penalty maybe penalize a couple games but put him back where he belongs 1st or 2nd line.some of the hawks take stupid penalty's they don't all play on the 4th line.
Windbag.
>Commitment to our troops is something that will always make the Blackhawks special and special they are
>Not a good sign that Bolland couldn't go as he often supports worthy causes throughout the city
>With headshots increasingly on the rise and players still unclear about what is OK, the NHL needs further rules clarity -- three things that should immediately be on the table for 2012 (pretty late to change things now): no hits to the head under any circumstances, no hits from behind, and allow the "2-second wrap" -- where the D-man wraps his arms around the player for a moment to contain him and then releases him -- heck Calgary does this all the time anyway and with certain officiating crews they never get called
>The unintended consequences of "no more holding" are the hits from behind that drive a player's head into glass that in most arenas no longer gives
>And let's not forget, when the NHL doubled the number of refs for each game, that each ref was not a Hall-of-Famer
