Same zip code, new kids (and a few familiar faces)

I think it's safe to say that I am officially hooked on the new "90210." I've watched the first three episodes and am actually pretty impressed by it, although I wish the original cast members had a little more screentime. Yes, the show is kind of hokey, but it's "90210!" Hokeyness abounds!

A few random comments about the series:

  • With a few exceptions, I like the "new batch" of kids, especially the Wilson twins. Shenae Grimes is adorable as Annie, the girl-next-door from Kansas, and Tristan Wilds is hilarious as Annie's adopted brother, Dixon.

  • The parents on the show are a far cry from Jim and Cindy Walsh. Most of them are tolerable, and I especially like watching Rob Estes and Lori Loughlin (Aunt Becky from "Full House") as Harry and Debbie Wilson. However, all of the parents look about 10 years older than their children! It's kind of ridiculous.
  • Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth are rocking as Brenda and Kelly. Their characters have been buddy-buddies so far, but finally got into a little tiff on tonight's show. Unfortunately, Doherty has only agreed to appear in four episodes, so it looks like Brenda's return to Beverly Hills will be very short-lived. Major bummer!
  • The identity of Kelly's baby daddy was finally revealed tonight, and it's none other than Dylan McKay. WHAT?! I am so pissed off! I was really hoping the kid would be Brandon's, or even Steve's. Dylan is supposed to be with Brenda, gosh darn it!
  • Tori Spelling isn't scheduled to reprise her role of Donna Martin anytime soon, but her character was finally mentioned on the show tonight. Kelly asked Brenda if she'd been to visit Donna, and Brenda said yes, commenting that Donna's baby is adorable. David Silver wasn't mentioned at all, though, so it looks like there's at least one outstanding baby daddy scenario that needs to be solved.

Well, there you have it. The new characters on the show are pretty decent, but I'm sure many viewers are like me and are primarily tuning in to catch a glimpse of the characters from the original series. At this point, I plan to keep watching. My hope is that Doherty signs on to shoot more episodes, and Dylan's character eventually returns to town and finds that Kelly wants nothing to do with him. In his sadness, he turns to Brenda, which will result in what we've all been waiting for...a massive Brenda/Kelly catfight! Bring it on!

Honestly...

....I've never even heard of Shenae Grimes until "90210." I've never seen "Degrassi."

You're missing out...

... Degrassi is the best Canadian teen drama ever... You can probably get the DVD's on netflix or something and its on The N on Comcast digital cable. I think you can watch eps at the-n.com too.

I've heard nothing but good things about it...

...but I already watch way too much TV as it is, especially with "Dancing with the Stars," "Californication" and "Dexter" all premiering next week. What to do, what to do?!

Shenae Grimes was way better on Degrassi

Of all the Degrassi actors, I never thought she'd be the first one to break out into a mainstream american series.

I think 90210 is ok, but it's the 4th best show on CW.
