Lou's pregame

Lou's pregame

The best part of the day when covering the baseball beat is the pregame chat with the manager, especially when that manager's name is Lou Piniella. This is also especially true when the Cubs are on the road, and it's generally just the beat writers and Lou. Piniella doesn't like doing his pregame with a lot (or any) TV cameras present, and he doesn't like doing it in the Cubs' interview room, where a fair amount of media members seem to ask questions just to get a rise out of Lou. Others seem even to take delight when Lou chastises them because it gets them a little attention. Lou can be a walking stream of consciousness, and it's easy to read his mood. This afternoon, he strode into the dugout with a bit of a scowl, and it was clear something was on his mind. That "something" was his team's recent 3-8 record. I asked Lou if he was disappointed or irritated. "I'm not disappointed or irritated or anything else," he said. "It's just a matter of fact. I'm basically a bottom-line guy. Wins are the culmination of a lot of good things. Losses are the fact that this team isn't functionining exactly the way it should." The Cubs are 18-14 heading into tonight's game. Despite the winning record, Lou said he's contemplating changes. That may or may not be news to GM Jim Hendry, Lou's boss, but as I said above, Lou can be a walking stream of consciousness. Oftentimes, he'll say something one day and take it all back the next. But it makes for good copy on the first day. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
