Taking a few days for the all-star break. I'll be back at Wrigley Thursday for the opener of the Cubs-Marlins series. Some roster spots recently opened up at Class AAA Iowa with the releases of Fernando Perez and Augie Ojeda. The Cubs will fill them by promoting outfielder Brett Jackson and infielder-outfielder Ryan Flaherty from Class AA Tennessee to Iowa.
Jackson has a line of .256/.373/.443 with 10 homers, 32 RBI, 45 walks and 74 strikeouts. Flaherty is at .305/.384/.523 with 14 homers, 66 RBI, 40 walks and 55 strikeouts.
Jackson will go into center field at Iowa. Flaherty and DJ LeMahieu will go back and forth between second and third bases. As you know, Jackson was the Cubs' No. 1 pick in 2009. Flaherty, who turns 25 on July 27, was a second-rounder in 2008 out of Vanderbilt. In my conversations with Oneri Fleita, the Cubs see value in Flaherty being able to play multiple positions.
The Cubs also will promote outfielder Jae-Hoon Ha to Tennessee from Class A Daytona. And we reported that outfielder Matt Szczur is going from Class A Peoria to Daytona.
Depending on what deals the Cubs make, it's possible you'll see Jackson, LeMahieu and/or Flaherty in Chicago this season.
Thanks for the input on the last few blogs. Talk to you from the ballpark Thursday.
