Illinois basketball is reliving the glory days --- and offering a sneak peek at Bruce Weber's new crew -- Saturday at Assembly Hall.
The doubleheader starts at 5 p.m. with Weber's newcomer-laden team playing a serious scrimmage. It's the first chance for fans to see the 2011-12 squad play as they wrap up preparations for next week's trip to Italy. I'm told it won't be some sort of Midnight Madness loosey-goosey game...they're going to be serious.
Then comes the alumni game at 6 p.m. More than 100 former Illini --- including pretty much everybody who has been anybody in the last 10 years --- are going to be on hand. Bill Self even showed up for Friday night's reception, though he won't be around today.
Then, if you're so inclined, Deron Williams is hosting a postgame reception to raise money for his Point of Hope Foundation.
The Assembly Hall tickets are $15. Williams' event is $150 a shot. In both instances, you can buy at the door.
Oh, and did I mention it's Day 3 of football practice at Memorial Stadium? Ron Zook is running split sessions from 1 to 4:50 p.m.
