KENOSHA -- Don’t get too jealous, but I’m typing this blog from the fabulousness known as the Brat Stop. I recommend the two-brat lunch. Heart-healthy, especially if you add some fries to your order.
Northwestern just finished its primary fall scrimmage at UW-Parkside and the results were about as perfect as Pat Fitzgerald could draw up. In other words: nobody suffered any injuries bigger than a ding, the offense and defense took turns making plays and Steve Flaherty wrapped up the affair with a 50-yard field goal.
The Wildcats produced 3 touchdowns and 3 field goals in 12 drives, though one of the TDs and one of the FGs came when the offense was allowed to start at the defense’s 26-yard line.
Before I forget, NU kept approximately 16 starters/key players on the sidelines. On offense: QB Dan Persa, RB Jacob Schmidt, WR Jeremy Ebert, WR Charles Brown, TE Drake Dunsmore, LT Al Netter, LG Brian Mulroe, RG Ben Burkett, RT Patrick Ward.
On defense: DE Vince Browne, DE Tyler Scott, DT Jack DiNardo, DT Niko Mafuli, CB Jordan Mabin, S Brian Peters.
Approximately seven other potential-to-likely contributors sat out due to injury.
Sophomore Kain Colter, clearly Dan Persa’s backup, played the first series before hitting the sidelines. He directed the offense on an eight-play, 58-yard drive that ended with a 34-yard Jeff Budzien field goal.
Redshirt sophomore Evan Watkins and redshirt freshman Trevor Siemian took the bulk of the snaps as they battle to be the No. 3 guy. Siemian directed a 14-play, 58-yard touchdown drive that was big on short, quick passes. Watkins delivered the day’s biggest play when he hooked up with Venric Mark on a deep down-and-out for 39 yards.
Here are my unofficial statistics. They ought to line up pretty close to Northwestern’s official numbers. The quarterbacks weren’t live, so the officials tried to blow the whistle as soon as they were touched.

6th drive: Tyris Jones 2 yard run (red-zone drive)
7th drive: Mark 7 pass from Siemian
9th drive: Flaherty 40 FG
11th drive: Budzien 23 FG (red-zone drive)
12th drive: Drew Moulton 17 pass from Zack Oliver
Rushing: Colter 2-23, Treyvon Green 7-18, Jordan Perkins 4-17, Tyris Jones 6-16, Mike Trumpy 3-14, Adonis Smith 5-12, Tim Hanrahan 4-10, Zack Oliver 1-8, Evan Watkins 2-5, Venric Mark 1-3, Trevor Siemian 4-(-15). Total: 39-111.
Passing: Colter 2-3-0-28, Watkins 8-14-0-80, Siemian 7-9-0-49, Oliver 2-2-0-22. Total: 19-28-0-179.

We'll have some numbers from Illinois' and Northern Illinois' scrimmages as the day goes on...and there'll be a bunch more Northwestern stuff in Sunday's paper.
