Adding Fielder makes Tigers a powerhouse

When the Tigers' Victor Martinez went down with a season-ending knee injury a few weeks back, the White Sox appeared to have a sliver of hope in the AL Central this season.
Following Tuesday's bombshell announcement – free-agent first baseman Prince Fielder signed a nine-year, $214 million contract with Detroit – the Sox, Indians, Twins and Royals instantly became division also-rans.
Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander are three of the Top 10 players in the game, and the Tigers are now set up for a World Series run.
Over time, Detroit is probably going to regret giving Fielder such a long contract.
For now, the Fielder addition makes Detroit a powerhouse team.

I really do think he will be

I really do think he will be a flop, at least for the first few years. It seems more times than not that players switching leagues start out slow. One example, Dunn.

Big Contracts to Hitters Don't Usually Pay

>Scot, a few silver linings for White Sox fans on this signing
>History shows big contracts to hitters often flop: Rios, Dunn, Jason Bay, Jason Werth, Carl Crawford, Soriano, Hafner, A-Rod, J.D Drew, Vernon Wells, Carlos Lee -- that's enough for now -- seems just about every MLB team has one or two of these awful contracts -- the player's contribution to the team's overall record usually didn't make a strong difference and the team was stuck with a big dollar contract with no chance of moving it
>Tigers already don't catch the ball very well -- and with Cabrera at third and Fielder at first they will be giving teams even more extra ABs
>Tigers had a .500 record without Verlander and that's with big year's from many of their hitters
>Just a year ago, many were handing the AL Central to the White Sox when they signed Dunn

Good points

Sox and rest of AL Central have to hope Fielder flops.
Key point, as you mentioned, is the defense. Cabrera can barely play 1B, so imagine what's going to happen if he really does move to 3B. I'll believe that when I see it.
